I just use the same username everywhere. If you see an 'optimusjamie', chances are it's me.

I suppose. My first (and second through ninth) reaction would be "oh they saw you had similar names, wanted to see if you were the same person".

Agreed. But if I didn't have the same, or similar, username, I would find mildly suspicious if someone figured out the connection. Like if someone randomly dropped in my Facebook and asked if I was Heatth here. How would they know?

Perhaps someone else told them?

I have the unfortunate circumstance of my username being taken on a lot of sites (like Twitter and You Tube, for instance), so places where I'm not 0dd1, I'm usually either noone0dd1 or TackyRackyComix (or similar, the latter naned after a comic series I started to make when I was like 12, which was basically a ripoff of the Sonic The Hedgehog comics).

[up]Okay? My point is some people like to keep certain parts of their on-line life separated. So it is perfectly understandable why some would find creepy is a random Internet person is playing connect dots.

It is creepy. Especially considering all the doxxing & doxxing attempts that happen lately.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.

I think it's only creepy in depending on the circumstances. It can be totally benign, and just out and out labeling it as creepy is shortsighted and doesn't consider a multitude of possibilities.

Here's another example: Someone friend requests you on Facebook, but you don't recognize the name. You talk to this person every day in class, but you just don't know their name, and thus don't make the connection here. Does this make their friend request creepy?

[up]We weren't talking about friend requests on Facebook though? Why did you even bring this on? The argument was about connecting different on-line account together. Which is creepy if you do try to keep them separated.

It's an analogy, same principle, someone you think you don't know but you actually do trying to connect with you.

It is not the same principle at all. It is a completely different situation. I expect people I know from college, work or whatever to connect with me on Facebook. That is more or less what Facebook is for. But I don't expect people to connect my different online identities together, if I am using a different username.

Personally, I use my real name on Facebook, but I avoid using it everywhere else, where I usually go by 'Heatth'. Since only friends know I like the 'Heatth' user name, I am bothered if a random people I don't know make the connection. It would probably innocent, but it might not be. Going back to the original question, if I used a completely different username here than I used in Tumblr and don't openly disclose I am both the same, I probably would be worried by an anonymous message like that. That is clearly not the case for AHR, as LogoP probably thought it was, but could be.

This, basically.

I deliberately use a different screenname (and often cultivate an entirely different persona and style of writing) on every website, so I'm definitely startled and a little worried whenever anyone makes that kind of connection. But so far it's always been benign, and most of my closest friends have been found by one or both of us stalking the other from website to website.

I think it's creepy depending on circumstance. If you think it's creepy, period, that's fine - but I agree that someone could be asking benignly because they're just curious if you're the same person with a similar username that they've seen, just asking out of curiosity.

That's not to say some people who think like that aren't creepy. It ultimately comes down to how the person is thinking and if they're going to be a creep with that info, and you usually can't tell if that's the case. I understand the wariness in this case, but I don't think this situation is inherently malicious or creepy in nature - it's probably just curiosity.

But yeah, if the situation is weird to you, you have every right to see who's asking around about you. If they say something to the effect of "I asked you first", then you know something's up.

I remember the only account of mine on the Internet that isn't a variation of "Pachylad" being my Deviant Art account; I just strung together 1 random word 3 times, the first that came to mind, because I couldn't wait to get to the NSFW content. :3

I usually use a variation of Phantom or Phantasm, but my tumblr is different mostly because I lost my similar name one by forgetting my password it was "Phantasms-and-Visions" but now I'm "Fairytales-and-Imaginings"

I just like the way Phantasm looks and sounds, and don't always have that option so sometimes go with Phantom, which is semi good.

My username is the first one I came up with when signing up for Nick.com's message boards years ago (and as you can probably guess from what I signed up for, it was referencing The Fairly Odd Parents, which I was really into at the time). I usually use a zero in place of the "O" because I'd messed up signing up for the first major forum I was part of (TR's Rockin', back when the forum was actually connected to the now defunct Pokemon fansite) but wanted to keep the same username, so I just substituted the letter for the number.

I try to just be "Mukora" everywhere, but it was taken when I signed up for Tumblr, so I had to add an extra "K" and I accidentally typoed it as "Mukors" when I signed up for Twitter.

The name comes from me, as a child, mishearing the name "Bakura" on Yu-Gi-Oh and thinking it would be a pretty rad username. I even had a Sonic OC to go with it.
