You can avoid some of the bloat by turning gingerbread off, if you don't mind missing avatars and signatures.Huh. That never occurred to me.
What I've been doing is to manually edit the HTML so they all point to the same set of images. But the threads I save are only, like, 5 pages at the most.

Greasemonkey
is an addon for Firefox (and maybe other web browsers, I don't know) that allows you to run Javascript scripts on a per-website basis. Like, I have a script that runs on any discussion page on these forums that replaces the "Add Post" button with a post box and submit button, so I can type my reply on the same page as the discussion is on.
