Methinks Oda wasn't having his head straight when he wrote that. Best explanation I can come up with is that he wanted the big lesson to come through for Shirahoshi, but cocked up in the execution.
"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)She valued peace in her homeland more than justice for her mother, it was an idealistic stand of Actual Pacifist tendencies.
I actually thought it was a powerful moment and I understood where it was coming from, but if the question is if it was the smart or right thing to do, then my answer is no.

When you consider that she essentially let Hody run around unimpeded for years then what she did can't be considered correct by most standards.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Yeah, not holding hatred in your heart is one thing, willfully turning a blind eye towards a budding threat to your country's national security is a different matter altogether.
My Megaman and MegaTen liveblogsEh, it can all be passed off by saying she was a young kid back then. I understood and felt the moment too, but even a filthy fan (apologist) like me can tell it feels really rough around the edge.
"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)Ok yeah I can give her a pass for when she was just a little kid though she should have told when she got older & thereby should know what to do whats right. Also the problem with people praising her for keeping the secret. I wouldn't have praised her or called it a strong thing to do, I would have just said its sad & be disappointed that this all could have been easily solved in the first place.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."True. Execution needed polishing. At least it's safe to say the the rest of the story afterwards aren't as... controversial.
Okay yeah, Dressrosa was hella controversial, but at least there are a lot more genuinely good aspects to it as well.
"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)Luffy's call-back to his first fight with Bellamy, Zero's final epic moves on Pica, Usopp's battles against Sugar & unlocking Haki, Franky's battle with Senior Pink, Law's origin, his final fuck you to Doffy, the heartwarming moment where he wants to die by Luffy's side should he fail to atone for dragging his friend to his mess. Yeah there were a ton of good moments.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Don't forget thousands of pirates swearing loyalty to the Straw Hats, including Bartolomeo and Cavendish, putting the Revolutionaries into the spotlight, Fujitora, Gear Fourth, massive impact on the civilized world, the callback to the beginning of the arc at the very end, and just Doffy in general. You could even add Kyros and Rebecca finally being able to touch each other's hands to the list as well, but their story could have been paced better, and Rebecca's left enough of a sour taste on many fans' mouths as it is. Still, the point stands.

"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)Yeah a lot of good. ...Too bad it was also watered down with a lot of bad or "I don't care" and stretched way too thin.
Dressrosa had more positives than negatives for me, but it did NOT need to be that long.
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."It's a learning experience, definitely. Didn't you guys feel it the way how Oda carried out the Zou Arc?
"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)Also Robin should've taken out Gladius. Just have her make a big arm on the cliff face and pound him into the dirt and we'd be good.
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."Oh, yeah, Zou has definitely been great. I've been surprised by how much I enjoyed it, especially seeing how short it really turned out to be.

I've mulled over the Rebecca business and have decided it's likely not rooted in sexism so much as it is an Author Tract for Oda's views on parenting. King Riku's paternalistic attitude toward his countrymen is likely part of this as well.
Granted, it is still sexist, because when was the last time you saw this sort of thing done with a son?
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."Never but I believe that can be done if the son has a soul & personality unfit to be a warrior.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."To be fair, I could totally see Kyros treating a hypothetical son the exact same way. The (most likely unintentional) sexism lies with how Oda choice to write the situation and not the situation itself.
Oh I don't doubt Oda's Dad instinct's got the better of him.
I'm A Pervert not an Asshole!I wonder if something similar might happen with that Momonosuke kid. Or does the paternal instinct only kick in with daughters?
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."A Papa Wolf will usually be a Papa Wolf regardless of whether or not his kid's a son or daughter. Now, if said father is a Men Are Tough kind of guy...
So far with Momonosuke it appears that he is meant to be kept as safe as possible. The best he can do is take responsibility for his status as a lord.

"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)Probably a daughter thing. After all, we can't have pretty ladies getting roughed up, now can we?
¿?¡!Oh, I believe Oda is still capable of injuring his female characters. It just so happens that many of the actual moments of hurting only happen offscreen...
"When I was alive, I was a tender soul. Now, I am tenderloin." -Nanako (Senryuu Shoujo)Well, yes he can, but, how do I put this...
I have always ridiculed people for making a big stink out of the Hotter and Sexier Time Skip, because even in the anime, where the breasts are larger and Male Gaze is more prominent, OP never feels like it's detracting from the story for the sake of fanservice. However, it does seem like since the ladies became more sexualized, Oda has been more hesitant to subject them to injury compared to pre-Time Skip, where fanservice was more focused on skimpy clothing than body shape.
¿?¡!
Alright good cause its weird how only Hody himself called what she did stupid.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
