... No wonder they'd make good Space Marine material, they've naturally got steel nerves. I can see that as one of their ritual trials, but maybe with boulders. And if a cliff is used, the jumper has to get within an inch of the bottom to be let onto the next task.
What can I say? Indigenous peoples tend to be Badass that way. Keep in mind that the Melanesians—and the Nuer, for that matter—are not warlike—they're yam farmers and cattle herders, respectively.
The Danse Macabre CodexBadass Pacifist, right there.
Indeed. That said, they can defend themselves when necessary, so they don't quite meet the criterion; a bit more of a case of Beware the Nice Ones.
Well, I'm going to bed now; I'll introduce the Onitroopers in the morning.
It sounds like good music, by the way, though admittedly I didn't listen to the whole song.

The Danse Macabre CodexI'm now imagining a Melanasian based Guard force specialising in paratrooper and orbital landings.

Locking you up on radar since '09I think we need to build a clearer picture of which forces are where, in what quantities, and maybe a few other details like terrain and such. It's all becoming a little hard to keep track of.
When in deadly danger, When beset by doubt, Run in little circles, Wave your arms and shout. Here, have some more forces.

Tengu = badass.
I'll be bringing in some airpower... but in a different sector, so as not to steal the Tengu's glory.
Locking you up on radar since '09As Flanker asked...
The Melanes Orbital and Aerial Strike Corps (M.O.A.S.C.)
Dotted across various stars in the Segmentum Tempestus are the Melanans, who originally hail from the world of Melanes Prime. Melanes Prime is an agri-world centred around the cultivation of the yam, a vegetable native to Melanes (it is named for it's striking similarity to the plant of the same name that was once native to Terra). Vast yam-farms stretch across the planet's surface with the exception of various archipelagos found in the planet's equatorial seas.
The natives of Melanes are known for an eccentric ritual undertaken to ensure the harvest of yams is bountiful. They will take vines from trees, construct ceremonial wooden platforms, and leap off of these platforms, hoping that the Emperor will guide them into getting as close to the ground as possible without dying. If they succeed in touching the ground and surviving, the harvest will be good.
It is recorded that at some point during 38415, the planet's governor and Guard commander Agelast Stome bore witness to this ritual. Stome, recognizing the skill and potential value of the jumpers, decided to train some of them in combat and train them in parachute jumps. This was an astounding success, and the Melanes Aerial Strike Corps was founded.
The Corps became master paratroopers, dropped into enemy territory from Valkyries. From there, learning Orbital Strike strategies seemed a natural advancement. In this field too they excelled, and their orbital landing skills better even some of the Astartes.
Currently, the M.O.A.S.C. forms nearly half of the Guard regiments recuited from the systems the Melanes settled in. The regiments in the M.O.A.S.C. are known colloquially as the 'Sky Divers'.
In addition to their unique specialization, the Melanans are possessed of a bravery bordering on insanity. A Melanan trooper will make a daring move if it presents itself, no matter what the risks involved. This is not to be confused with recklessness; instead it is a testament to their ability to retain a level head and make selfless decisions in tight situations. Many a Guardsmen or civilian owes their life to the ability of the Melanans to put their life on the line without any hesitation.

Locking you up on radar since '09Thank you. /takes a bow
The problem is that whenever I write these things up, I really wnat to use them in the RP. As a result, I'll probably have fifty characters and get constantly confused as to what's going on.

Silon will probably have to make with the stabbity-stabbity later - it would be a tad hard to keep your credibility/fight one-on-one in the middle of a battlefield.
Locking you up on radar since '09Thhe ones that turn into crows (and if approved, he won't be coming out of bird form, he's weird like that).
Hmmmm...that's a difficult one. There's actually no mention of Tengu being able to turn into birds in Touhou Canon, but there were those Crow-Mooks in Mountain of Faith...
Oh yes. Have some fitting music.

Join us in our quest to play all RPG video games! Moving on to disc 2 of Grandia!A giant bird then.
Uhm...that means I'll have to consult Japanese Folklore to make something from scratch...
...how about a Kotengu/Konoha-tengu? They're described as being very...bird-like. Normally they're the same as Crow Tengu, but for now we can say they are a...parallel breed or something. Konoha-tengu are said to have a wingspan of two meters.

Something for the sequel, probably a tainted Shrine planet? Or maybe a battle in heaven for the current.
