I'm ironically unable to properly articulate how awesome languages are. But seriously! J'aime les langues!

Also ironically, I'm not sure whether that should be a "les" or "des" up there. I sort of think "des" because it's not really a definite article sort of context, but I'm not sure how one goes about entire concepts in French and "les" looks more correct to me right now. Gah!

I love languages too!grin

Besides English, I speak Spanish, Japanese, and German, and a teeny smidge of Portuguese. (I took a "Portuguese for Spanish Speakers" course one semester.)

Oooh, cool! Fluently, or just understand-most-grammatical-constructs-and-know-lots-of-words sort of know? All I can really speak is English, but I'm working on French and sometime in the future I want to learn lots of languages. I just think it would be a nice thing to be able to do.

Fluently for German, Japanese, AND Spanish.

I've fan-translated some Doujinshi (mostly Yu Yu Hakusho), and, well, Spanish was my undergrad major.

The number of years I've been at each:

  • Spanish: 15
  • Japanese: 9
  • German: about 5

Creo que espanol es la idioma mas bonita para hablar, pero ingles es mas eficiente por muchos situaciones.

Y si, I know that I used a lot of cognates, I'm not good at it.

I probably would have made this thread if you hadn't. :D

I like different languages, even though I only speak 1 1.7 languages fluently (I'm still learning Spanish). I just know assorted words from French, Japanese, German, and a couple of assorted others.

Inter-lingual puns are great. And at the risk of sounding Weeaboo-ish, Japanese is a great topic for any xenoglossophilic for all the grammatic subtleties, puns and double meanings.

And I have such a languagekink, cough

Hell yeah languages!

I'm currently learning French and Japanese, though despite having been at it for quite some time, the latter is still very primitive for me.

AGREE. They're all just so beautiful! Though I can't speak many. The only language I know how to read, write, and speak fluently is English. Telugu I can speak well but I read like a first grader. I can follow a conversation in Hindi but it takes a while to form a sentence. No puedo hablar en español muy bien, pero estoy aprendiendo. (Man, that last word looked really awkward. Is that really how you say it?)

Edit: @Gelzo: Sorry man, you used too many words.

Pues, estoy tratando de aprender español...pero no estoy segura que he tenido mucho éxito. Es probable que suspenderé la examen AP de español en mayo.

我也可以講一點中文, 可是不太會寫字或讀字...其是我也不太會說話. 我的成度沒有很好...我很希望頸步....先在對我最難的是寫和讀,因為有很多字我知道這麼說可是不知道這麼寫. 阿, 我快忘記說了—我是學繁體字, 因為我的爸媽是從台灣來的.

I kind of want to learn Japanese, but I'd feel like a gigantic weeaboo if I did....

Not really, actually. Only English I know was that preceding statement and this one explaining it.

I've always wanted to learn to say "Sorry, I don't really speak (language) except for this phrase." in like 32649837492873 languages.

Also, everyone in this thread is linguistically cooler than me. Which is both good and bad.

I think I figured out why Gelzo's thread died. It's because he was just talking about the construct of language, which while incredibly cool is difficult to detailedly discuss. We're talking about specific languages up in this thread, which can be easily shown and discussed.

Also, people like individual languages better than the whole or something.

"I've always wanted to learn to say "Sorry, I don't really speak (language) except for this phrase." in like 32649837492873 languages."

This. I taught myself to say "Habla en ingles, por favor, no hablo Español" in the first couple weeks of Spanish 1. In French I only know "Je ne sai pas!" and "anglais, sil vous plait." I have a horrible French accent, though, so I don't think they could understand.

I don't think something to short and simple should be too clouded by a bad accent, so long as you're using close-to-proper pronounciation.

I think. I only know three fluent French people and they all speak English as well and live in the US, so I'm not really experienced.

I'm actually hoping to move to a part of the US where there are a lot of native Spanish-speakers. If I get into college down there, that is.
