So I finished playing this the other night, after having picked it up during the steam holiday sale. I have to say, I'm sorry it took me so long to get around to playing this one. I'm not even entirely sure what I specifically liked about it so much, but it has this charm that drew me in almost immediately once I started playing. I like the world they made, it has a fun, not too serious feel to it, without being silly, so that you can take the story seriously. The characters were memorable and enjoyable and the gamplay was fun and fairly intuitive. Also, I love the goat children.

'Shame that the Un-Cancelled sequel has slipped back from Development Hell into Vapor Ware status. Again.

I picked up a PS 2 copy for 6 bucks a few months ago. It is a real fun game, only complaint is that it was pretty short, even including the sidquests. I beat and 100% the game in around ten hours. I'd probably get the sequel if it ever comes out.

I played this a couple of years back on the Gamecube, and I LOVED it. Everything about it. The voices, Double H, the soundtrack, Double H, Pey'j, Double H, the ending, Double H...did I mention Double H?

Y HALO THAR THREAD.

I have made my love for this game well-known, primarily in my consistant Entry Pimping of it. To the point where more than one troper has blamed attributed their deciding to play it to me. And indeed, I do love it, despite its many flaws. I think it's the first game I've ever played where the actual story and characters really resonated with me, other than plain gameplay and/or oblique worldbuilding. The story isn't handled perfectly, but the characters are without a doubt some of my favorites in any game ever, because they're weird, they're lovable, and they actually felt like people to me. Also, groovy character design.

@Electi: God damn what is it about that man. The only reason I can see for him not being a Memetic Sex God is the fandom being so small. I thought I was a wacko for harboring PSL for him, and then I see things in Deviant Art comments like, "Oh, yeah, when I was 16 I totally wrote Self-Insert Fic where I married him... heh."

Plus, the whole torture bit just SCREAMS Woobie/Hurt/Comfort Fic.

First heard of it when I watched Chip Cheezum's LP of it. Then, around Holiday of '09, I bought a used copy of the Gamecube version. beat it a few weeks ago on my Wii. It kicked ass.

And has anyone ever gone about and compiled a list of all the pages of Carlson & Peeters that Double H mentioned? I know that somewhere on Deviant ART, someone made up the introduction to the book.

I do enjoy that LP. It was Chip and Ironicus' first, so they hadn't ironed out all the kinks yet, but their constant troubles are part of the charm!

I found a list once of all the quotes from said book, but I've misplaced it. :<

Don't break up the team. Carlson and Peeters, page 823.

I did enjoy Double H. I was a bit worried about what the new sidekick was going to be like, since I knew ahead of time that there was going to be another one besides Pey'j at some point, and I really liked Pey'j. I was quite pleasantly surprised.

I think it's a mix of the Cloud Cuckoo Lander traits, the puppy-dog loyalty, and the fact that he's so enthusiastic about everything.

When I first played through the game, I didn't know, so it was a serious shock to me when poor Pey'j got brutally beaten.

I attribute this to the fact that, while a lot of game journalism outlets like to talk about this game, they talk about the game rather than about the game.

Tofu, I'm beginning to suspect we're secretly alter-universe clones, since it seems like we like a lot of the same things.

Mmm... happy rolls.

"Adorkable" is definitely a good word for him. Actually, you could probably come up with an "adorable" portmanteau for each member of the main cast, since they're all pretty much adorable in some way. Ugly Cute piggies!

Anybody got an idea what the differences are between the various versions of this game? There was a copy for three dollars at a Hollywood Video but I hesitate to buy a PS 2 version of a game that's also available for the two better systems.

See you in the discussion pages.

Nothing major. I've heard there's differences in the soundtrack (supposedly the 'Cube version uses gimped tracks, but I can't hear it), but the only "real" differences I've seen are a few graphical glitches in the console versions being absent from the PC one. However, I'd avoid that one anyway, as the controls aren't great. PS 2 is fine at that price, though handling the overworld vehicle takes a little more finesse with the PS 2 controller.

I played this a few times via Game Tap, though I never actually got through to the end. I need to scrounge up ten dollars to re-subscribe to that... yeah, pretty good game. They might just be trying to keep details of the sequel quiet, seeing as how the only info we got was a leak... I think.

I had the GC version. For the most part, it was okay, though sometimes, the voice acting wouldn't be there. Though it normally would be back if you got closer to the talking NPC.

On an urelated note, I liked how that propaganda message by the Alpha Sections that would play in the main area of Hyllis would change as you advanced in the game.

I actually didn't find the PC controls to be too bad, but that might be because I'd heard they were and was expecting much worse. You can't customize them, which is really a cardinal sin in PC gaming, but I didn't find the way they set them to be as bad as I expected. See, I use the arrow keys, not the wasd keys, I'm all old school like that. So the fact that they actually did set up alternates of most of the other keys around them so that I could use them was a pleasant surprise. My only major beef was that they neglected to make an alternate for the crouch key, so for the crouchey portions, it meant I had to temporarily switch over to the wasd keys, which was annoying.

Other than that, they were okay, but there really is no proper excuse for non-customizable controls.

@Tofu: I seem to recall that I was accused of being a Freezair doppleganger at one point, too, so it's possible there's even more than that; which means you can probably take your pick on which expy you want to be.

@Daionusthe23rd: Did you say... propaganda?

@Stranger: dear god, you're doing that "@" thing, now.

Know how everyone is Tzetze's sockpuppet? I think I might be the alternate version of that. :P Tofu can be the "happy perky sockpuppet," and Stranger can be the "angerier sockpuppet." It all works out! Or maybe... I'm really the perky Expy of Stranger, or Tofu is the real me? Mind Screw!

@Daion: Huh... I have the GC version, and never had that problem. Everyone talked just fine for me, except for the occasional NPC ADD from wandering over a hotspot in the middle of some canned babble. But I haven't met a game with dynamic dialogue yet that hasn't had that problem.

The PC controls can be customised. There's a setup app for it, but it's just not mentioned anywhere. You should be able to find it in the same directory in the main executable.

I'm presently having issues with severe graphical glitches on PC, I think I'll have to tweak the graphics card options until I can make it playable. I do still have my Exbawks version to fall back on, though.

Again with the data mining, dear Aunt?

I'm not sure if I'm angry enough on a regular basis to technically qualify as the angerier version (I'm officially adopting that spelling, by the way), but I do like the idea of being the Darker and Edgier version.

And we can do a dramatic standing back-to-back thing! It'll be great. :P
