I would say "Peru" or Venizulea. But The Emperors New Groove and Up had those countries covered.

Russia, maybe Khazaria or XIX century Latin America (What about a bizarre version of the Maximiliano and Carlota history? The Emperor and Empress of Mexico? AWESOME!)

Not many admittedly but what I do know about the mythology is interesting. Maria Makiling in particular is noteworthy.

XI Xth century Peru, using one of Ricardo Palma's tales. Some are NSFW, but a most are Disney worthy, in a "Adventures of Ichabod" sort of way.

Also some polynesian island (without aliens), feudal Japan, Israel, the Caucasus...

[up][up] I think Disney could do an awesome animated adaptation of Dracula. Most people would probably assume it would be too gory and scary for kids, but kids already know who Dracula is and what vampires do. As long as Disney a) kept the blood visuals to a minimum (which would probably do more to preserve the suspense anyway) and b) was willing to accept a PG rating (as it seems they are nowadays), it would probably be fine.

I'd like to see Disney actually come through with that Baba Yaga movie they had in development back in the '90's, so I'd vote with Russia. Also, I always wanted to see an animated Cu Cuhlain, so Ireland. If they wanted to go the Princess route, they could do Deirdre. Being Disney, they'd have to change the ending, but Disney's never had a problem with doing that before and having it turn out to be at least watchable...

Prydain. That movie needs a good sequel, especially since Aladdin, Cinderella, and The Lion King managed to have really good sequels. (And no, I'm not counting Dreams Come True.)

[up]Really, they should have done a live-action Chronicles of Prydain instead of Narnia.

I'd want pre-Colombian North America, focusing on a communal matriarchal tribe of Native Americans. It would be nice to have a Cool Old Lady be the Mentor Archetype instead of the typical bearded Merlin replica.

Another idea would be something set in Mughal-era India, and knowing Disney, it will probably involve a Hindu and a Muslim falling in love. It'd be cool to see them make Indian-style songs while still keeping it firmly Disney.

Transylvania. I would love to see a hand-drawn animated feature that is inspired by the legendary Dracula story. As well as being a PG rated film that isn't a musical, and keeping far away from the idiotic Twilight.

[up][up][up] Disney has actually given us a few Cool Old Lady mentors, most recently in Brother Bear. (She didn't get enough screentime, though, and the movie itself is pretty forgettable.) But there's also Grandmother Willow, even though she's a tree, and...hell, what about the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella? There are probably at least as many Cool Old Ladies as bearded Merlin replicas telling Disney protagonists what's what...especially when you consider that one of the latter...wasn't a replica.

So very, very much agree with this. I can just imagine Mina and Dracula singing a duet that serves as their "I Want" Song and Villain Song (respectively): they both sing about how they want to leave the homes they've known and see the world (with Dracula's lyrics naturally having a darker tone regarding what he'll do as he sees the world), and the song ends with them singing in unison, "This world . . . will . . . be . . . mine!"

P.S. Although, most of the Dracula story takes place in England, not Transylvania. tongue

P.P.S. It would have to be very heavily Bowdlerized, but a movie set in the ancient Mediterranean starring Cleopatra would be an interesting addition to the Disney princess lineup.

[up]This. This is all kinds of awesome. It must be done. It must.

  • Personally, I'd like to see a film set in the Old West, as an apology for their last attempt at that setting. It should have an Oregon Trail-like story, either that or the Gold Rush, and it should be bittersweet, if not outright tragic.
  • Also, I'd like to see them set a movie in the English countryside - think Wallace And Gromit.
  • Antarctica.
  • India.

Looking for some stories?

[up] A real dramatic and dark western film...that would be worthy to see, I support the idea wink

  • Anyway, now that Pixar is going to have a Scotish theme, what about Ireland?

  • I was thinking also in something Aboriginal Australian: they have a cool mythology

I'd like to see an adaptation of the Cupid and Psyche myth, with a lot of padding and revamping of course. Maybe make Psyche clever and less totally reliant on the kindness of strangers. I actually started on a screenplay for this and everything, a long time ago, but I couldn't find a proper way to end it.

[up] That could be pretty interesting, though you'd also need to do some tweaking so it seems less like Cupid's just playing a mind-game with Psyche.

Ireland, you say? How about Tam Lin? Girl Meets Boy, Girl Loses Boy (to Faeries), Girl Rescues Boy, Faeries Shapeshift Boy Into All Sorts of Hideous Things to Discourage Girl, Girl Is Determinator And Wins.

If they're not going to do The Snow Queen, they should do something where the girl rescues the boy. And this story is named after the male lead so they don't have that "People don't want to see a film named after a female character" excuse.

@Raven Wilder: In my version, Cupid and Psyche could see each other on Earth just fine, and they fell in love and stuff, but when they're up on Olympus, they can't ever make eye contact with each other, because there Aphrodite has the ability to see the world through Cupid's eyes, and she would find out that her son married her worst enemy. She would also get suspicious if Cupid just never came back of course, so he had to go after a reasonable amount of time. He was getting ready to leave her behind and everything, but Psyche said that it's okay, she would be willing to talk to him from behind a closed door because she loved him that much.
