The current reaction from most places is more 'ugh casuals' than dub hate.

I don't think this proves anything? We'll have to see how well this works out
,So those who generally prefer dubs like me are still a minority.
^^^^ I think the notion of a casual/hardcore divide, while not the same, tracks rather closely with the dub/sub divide.
In other news, Hummingbird has four reviews for Rage of Bahamut: Genesis.
> Airing from 6 Oct 2014
Unless this is something that's been airing every day and thus has like 15-20 episodes already, how are there even reviews of this? Based on how many episodes? 4 episodes? Even out of a 11-ep show, I wouldn't draw a conclusion after just that few.
Unless there's something that's just so absolutely horrible about it that is completely unredeemable. But these reviews claim that it's good or decent.

Take heart in knowing you're not alone, at least.
I'm with the preferring dubs because I like to be able to understand my casual entertainment. Especially since some dubs are superior to the original (Samurai Pizza Cats, anyone)?

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."Its more like 'X that I really like anime will never get a dub airing' more than that. It is so utterly obvious that shows like say Amagi Brilliant Park will never get anything like this only super casual stuff.

AKB 0048 got dubbed. Never forget.
But it would never have gotten a simul-dub or whatever they are calling these Space Dandy clones.
Er, the main thing is that the sub/dub war has almost completely lost relevance, since the sub side basically won. These days saying that you only watch anime dubbed means that you aren't really in the fandom and probably haven't watched a lot of the better stuff
People reviewing things way too early isn't really new
Which is an awful assumption that implies dubs are for weak-hearted newbies, but whatever
I'm rethinking joining this anime/gamers club at my school
I've been kinda dissatisfied with my school's anime/gaming club, to be honest.
Yeah, I had that problem. Worse when out of school though.

It's got exquisite visuals, Hollywood-esque flair, and solid writing. Basically, the good stuff is good enough that the odds on it utterly vanishing in the next seven episodes are low, particularly since it hasn't been telegraphing any obvious warning signs.

What's precedent ever done for us?Anime and games clubs from my experience are just filled with Nautards and Bleachies, my Jr High, 2 High School clubs and now College club were/are just filled with them.
Seriously out of 4 tries why couldn't I get something like Genshiken... heck even a club where part of them liked the just outside of super mainstream shows like Negima or Gundam.

Honestly, the main reason why there's a sub vs dub war in the first place is cause most dub-overs are mediocre. Years ago, I tried subscribing to that Animax channel whose English dubs sounded as though they were made by the same cast of only about a dozen voice actors. (I've no idea if they have improved.)
I tried watching the Cartoon Network dub of Naruto and could not last one minute. (Why the hell did they pick that voice for Naruto...)
On the flip-side, the minority well-done dub-overs are a treat to the ears. I refuse to choose between Professor Layton sub and dub cause I want both.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.I sometimes wonder if I'm stuck in an awkward middle ground between not liking fanservicey/ecchi stuff, or huge amounts of moƫ, or the "super-manly"/blood-and-gore stuff.
Seems like you're me.
Have you tried my Usual List (TM)? Rah Xephon, Infinite Ryvius, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Princess Tutu?
"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntFunimation's dubs are arguably the best in America, and they have the most titles..... but again, that's only one studio, and even they can't really solve the sub vs. dub debate due to how quickly subs come out first. Hell, they just released a press statement saying how they're gonna experiment with "simuldubs" that come out only a few weeks after the anime completes its run in Japan.
There are a lot of decent dubs out there, especially those that put some effort into it aka non-Sentai dubs.
However there is a bit of umm acquainting to new voices for characters you are attached to with dubs or just actor replacements. Heck before I went full on dark side I watched a lot of anime and many dubs and watching it subbed just sounded off, to this day I still think Gundam Wing, Azumanga Daioh, Record Of Lodoss War, Persona 4 and a few other series' dubs were better than subs.

Honestly, I think the whole "most dub-overs are mediocre" line is quite outdated at this point. Looking at only recent dubs, I can list ones we can all agree are just bad. But most other dub complaints I've seen are just people not liking that it's not all exactly the same. Nevermind that leaving the translations exactly the same makes for a really poor dub script unless you're really lucky.
EDIT: Slight clarifying.

What? No, there are still quite a few bad dubs out there. Plenty still suffer from AcCENT upon the Wrong SylLABle, mispronunciations, lazy script writing, miscast roles etc. Most of them are Sentai Dubs but even Funi does it on occasion.

Have you heard the Tamako Market dub recently?? Oh my God.....
edited 30th Oct '14 8:15:04 AM by kyun
I have not seen it, no. Should I?
I did not say that there are not bad dubs nowadays. I'm saying that the whole "most dubs are bad" viewpoint is outdated.
Sentai's dubs rub me the wrong way rather often, I'll give you that.
Clarified my original post.

Well, if you ask people in anime clubs, anime web forums, etc. whether they prefer subs or dubs, they usually overwhelmingly prefer subs, with some people opportunistically badmouthing dubs, and some other people who say "mostly subs, but dubs can be good sometimes".
