Give Shinji And Warhammer 40 K a try.
I don't really like that particular fic for a number of reasons, but yeah, it might be worth giving it a shot.

Well lookie here.

As soon as these Animator Expo shorts are done, Anno is apparently going to resume work on 3.0 + 1.0. I hope he doesn't go all Matrix Revolutions on this series.

I want him to throw a Metal Gear Solid 5 and just nuke it from orbit. Cross lines even End of Evangelion didn't cross.

[up][up]Good, not only does this confirm that progress is being/has been made, but Anno has taken time to work on stuff other than Eva, which I think is good both for him and Eva.

[up]Eh, I don't think what Kojima is doing with MGS 5 should be described as simply crossing lines he wouldn't/couldn't cross previously; rather, he's trying to show just how fucked up Big Boss was and that all the idiots who say that he and Ocelot were the real heroes are delusional. That is to say, Kojima is trying to make it impossible to miss the point.

And 3.0 is already far darker than Eo E.

And while we're on the subject of 3.0+1.0, I'm honestly not all that comfortable with the idea of people telling Anno what he should or shouldn't do with his creation. Or any other artist for that matter. Its one thing to simply say what you hope to see, or what you wish had been done differently, there's nothing wrong with that; but- You know what? Maybe I should just say that I'm better off avoiding Evageeks whenever possible.

Apparently one of the reasons of why it is taking so long for the next film to come out is because the work on 3.0 left Anno feeling emotionally drained and depressed afterwards.

[up][up] I sincerely hope that "serves 'im right" is referring to his wife helping him. Because if it isn't, well, I'm just going to say the less emotionally charged thing on my mind right now and let you guess the other thing: speaking as somebody who suffers from depression, no one deserves to suffer from depression.

If the chain of cause and effect is "I decide to make 3.0 as angsty and audience-trolling as possible, aiming for True Art, and in the process of crafting this audience-punching story I get extremely emotionally drained to the point that I relapse into depression", then he's paying the price of his artistic choices. Something similar happened to the staff involved in End Of Evangelion; it was brutal on them. It also happens to anyone who decides to participate in a very tragic and grim piece of theatre or cinema; your characters feel like crap, you leave the theatre feeling like crap, and that misery spills over into your private life. It's also why dramatic works are often more praised than comedic ones; making something that makes the audience miserable involves you being ten times more miserable and wretched for hundreds of times longer.

If it wasn't just the intent to make True, Worthy, High Art, but also a malicious will to hurt the fans' feelings, betray their expectations, subvert their hopes, and otherwise shit on them, then we move out of "no omelette without breaking eggs" and into "karmic retribution".

If first he relapsed into depression and then used the work therapeutically to work it out, spreading his misery around with a shovel and/or sublimating it into something beautiful, then that's pretty normal and in fact was the MO for the original series in the first place.

In Real Life the chain of causality and will is probably more complicated and muddled than that, and, more importantly, more difficult to know for sure even by those directly involved.

I've been depressed myself. Took me a lot of time, effort, luck, and money to move out of there. There's still people I would wish it upon, some of them with glee, precisely because I understand how horrible it is. What can I say, I can be petty, callous, and vindictive, sometimes, not to mention hypocritical. So sue me.

At this point, I must say, I find the idea of Anno back in depression to be without consequence or importance in the creation of 3.0. At this point in time the eva franchise only exists to sell merchandise and subvert the fandom's expectations. That 3.0 is as gut punchy as it is is merely a reflection of how Anno operates when directing this series in particular.

2.0: People lauded Shinji acting all badass without care for the consequences, then I will just show them consequences and piano for the next film.

Pretty much. 2.0 seemed like a step back when I first saw it, but then 3.0 was things going back to regular Eva format. At this point it really doesn't matter whether Anno's depressed or not. I have faith that he will act as he usually does.

If anything, he is extremely proud of the anime medium as a whole, as this interview proves:

Does anyone else think that this theme feels very Eva-ish?
