I watched the episode with the Reiquarium last night. Strangely, it was more of a Tear Jerker than Asuka getting Mind Raped, despite the fact that I liked Asuka as a character more than Rei. I'm thinking that it was because I also like Ritsuko a lot and seeing her go into full-blown My God, What Have I Done? mode in combination with the way the Rei clones went out was, well... I think "a horrific, absurd tragedy" would be an apt way to describe it.

It's "Zankoku", not "Zanukoku". "n" in Japanese is actually its own syllable.

Also, it is Tenshi ,no Tenchi. And Teeze, no Tzetze. That src dude fails at Japanese.

Tenchi and Tzetze were obviously deliberate. Zanukoku wasn't.

An MST, I think. Like RiffTrax?

And I wouldn't mind.

I would pay to see that,

It'd be like 50 cents, but I'd still pay.

Also, Evangelion has the best OP ever. Discuss.

Your Mileage May Vary. The version used in the anime itself is ridiculously cheesy, and I probably would have preferred Polovetsian Dances.

The piano version is pretty good, though.

First, you're implying that Cowboy Bebop's opening is not the best OP ever. Although I never liked Cruel Angel Thesis much, it does fit Evangelion very well, in a sort of ironic way.

Nah, Evangelion has a very good Op, but it's not the best ever.

The version used in the anime itself is ridiculously cheesy, and I probably would have preferred Polovetsian Dances.

Glad to see a better reimagining of the series picked up on that and incorporate the lietmotif as a major character's theme.

I wonder what sort of opening sequence it would have had with Polotsvian Dances?

I'd say Cruel Angel's Thesis falls among top 25, somewhere. You can't properly make a top # of music, anyway.

Musically-whise, the music used in the OP, "Zankoku na tenshi no Teze" is one of the best songs ever used in anime, in my opinion.

It has an awesome solo, with awesome drums and bass. A cool Epic Riff, made by a wind and a bass, IIRC. Neat vocals that even work in the 5+ idioms it has been traduced to, and several voices (Oh-Oh-O-O) combined with rock band instruments (DUM DUM DURUDUDUDUM) and An orchestra (DUDU DU DU DU DI DE DUDUDU DU DA E).

However, a great song doesn't make a good opening alone. A good opening also requires nice animation and coordination between audio and video. Whether the Evangelion has those or not is up to the watcher to decide.

It's a great song, with both a catchy melody and catchy harmonies, and well-balanced phrasing structure to support them.

As for the video, I think it's synched pretty well. The full-length music video is actually even better, as it basically presents the plot of Evangelion, character by character, through the song.

Cruel Angel's Thesis, Tank!, Inner Universe...three of the top five anime OPs of all time.

The only OP I have never skipped is Eden of the East's. Cruel Angel's Thesis always sounded too disco for me.

... There's nothing wrong with disco, in carefully controlled quantities.

I don't see much wrong with disco, at all.

Then again, I didn't grow up with disco, and I'm also the kind of person who prefers techno over both rock and rap, but strangely doesn't mind country much either.
