Title says it all...give name a game you make an exception of liking despite in a genre you HAAATE, and give a reason why you made an exception of them.

I'll start. I'm not too big a fan of incredibly violent ultra-realistic games that uses gore and blood as it's selling point. I make an exception for Resident Evil games. Despite having a cliched plot, and absolute lack of difficulty regardless of the difficulty setting you set them in, I can't help but appreciate how deep they went into the lore of the various viruses, and how the logs sometimes go into detail about the stages of developments of B.O.W's etc.

It's really Art Major Biology in the end, but I do appreciate how much detail and work they put into it. For example, in Resident Evil 4, they referenced REAL LIFE PARASITES who really do invade and change their host's personalities completely, and force them to commit suicide...and even if many of the excuses they use to explain how a virus works or why a monster acts like they do is no where near Real Life, atleast they showed that they put quite a bit of effort to give the various monsters and viruses a "personality" and please people who like reading logs and profiles of games like these.

I mean, what was Left 4 Dead 's lore on their virus? How did that virus operate? Why did they mutate? Etc. L 4 D is nothing compared to the RE series in this area, and their monsters aren't as...colorful as RE's either.

Another example is extremely violent ultra-realistic FPS games...and the exception I make is Bioshock. I'd like to elaborate, but...this is starting to look like a wall of text. So I'll just describe it with..."cute little sisters", "colorful enemies (their personalities)", "nice setting", and "I happen to like one of the background songs...about the puppies in the window", and "lack of military ass-kissing". Too bad that game was too easy...and they always end with anti-climatic final stages.

....aaanyways, your turn.

I really hate Grand Theft Auto and TPS s in general, but I still enjoy Shadow The Hedgehog.

The only real JRPG I've ever played is Enchanted Arms, and I really enjoyed it. All other JRP Gs that I am aware of I would rather stay away from due to being not my tastes. Ironic, considering that Enchanted Arms is practically a defining example of a stereotypical JRPG.

That said, there have been plenty of genres that I originally was planning on staying away from that I now enjoy passionately. For example, RTS games. Originally, I didn't exactly care for RTS games, I was more of an RPG and FPS player back then. Then I got Age Of Mythology and Rise Of Nations. Okay, kinda cool, not much to say there. Then came Rise Of Legends, which to this day remains one of my absolute favorite games out there (it is the one game that I would ever suggest pirating, and that's saying something). Then, I didn't get anything for several years. Then came Halo Wars, which was mostly a piggyback off of my original love for the Halo series (I was disappoint by it).

It *really* took off when I was heading on a trip this summer and decided that I needed new PC games to entertain myself. As such, I got Dawn Of War (+Winter Assault and Dark Crusade, I'm staying the hell away from Soulstorm), as well as Star Craft II at the same time. Star Craft II I field a neutral opinion about, but Dawn Of War is awesome. I wound up buying Dawn Of War II and Chaos Rising. Then came Warcraft III (and subsequently World Of Warcraft). It was about that time that I realized that I enjoyed RTS games. It all started with Rise Of Legends.

Speaking of Dawn Of War (hate to derail so early on), I originally was planning to stay away from 40K, as I found it phenomenally against my tastes (I was a D&D player back then, and I still am, only 3.5 Edition, and I can't find a guy to play it with). Dawn Of War changed that, and I started to enjoy 40K. I bought a novel (Fear The Alien). Then another (Ciaphas Cain, HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!). Then the Ork Codex. Then, while watching a match, I ordered a Marine codex while buying a Guard codex. I think you know where I am going with this.

Still need More Dakka, and it's about time to start a real WAAAAAGH.

I'll play light-gun games if a friend wants to, but I'm not really a big fan. The exception is House Of The Dead: Overkill, because that game is not about the light gun. It's about the whole package.

The day I bought that game was the day I saw the funniest face on a cashier I've ever seen in my life.

Halo. I was surprised by how fun Halo is. Sure I die like I do in every other FPS but at least it's still fun. All other FPS's bore. There's only so much reality, military worship, and gun porn I can handle in my escapism.

For me, it's less about genre, more about location of origin.

As such, only a handful of Japanese titles are owned by yours truly. They are:

  • F-Zero X and GX, along with the SNES original via Virtual Console.
  • Multiple Ace Combat installments, all home console. Basically, all the home console iterations made after Shattered Skies plus SS itself.
  • Sega Rally Revo.
  • Outrun Online Arcade.
  • Multiple iterations of the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise. Like AC above, only home console iterations.
  • Star Fox 64, Adventures and Assault.
  • The entire Super Smash Bros series so far.
  • 1080 Snowboarding and its sequel, Avalanche.
  • Wave Race 64 and its sequel, Blue Storm.
  • X-Squad.

Now that may seem like a pretty beefy list, but most of them show little to no ties to Japanese culture. F-Zero and Star Fox probably show the most.

Actually, there's quite a bit of info on that.

As for being on topic, I guess System Shock in regards to survival horror games.

I don't have too much to say.

Oh yeah, and I forgot...

For western RPG's...Never Winter Nights.

Asides from Final Fantasy 3, NWN 2 is the only game that lets me DUAL WIELD SPEARS!!....too bad it really really really sucked. But f*ck it, Rule of Cool>>>everything else.

And the first one ain't bad too, the large bestiary of monsters and spells is interesting for a newcomer like me....

Of course, it will grow stale after I play many games like it and get used to all the monsters and spells. (I hear magic missiles and fireball is a staple I'll always see in games like these).

I got tons of these.

I can get burned out on FPS easily...unless it's Left 4 Dead. Or Duke Nukem. So much fun. Not a big fan of turn-based JRP Gs, but I love Final Fantasy VI and the Super Mario RP Gs. Not a fan of sports games, but I am a big-time Punch-Out!! fan (although, admittedly, that's more of an action-puzzle game), and I'm nuts over NBA Jam.

Not much of a fan of fighting games unless it's Super Smash Bros., and I'm given to understand it's not a for realz fighting game anyway.

Also Pikmin is the only RTS I've ever enjoyed.

I typically don't enjoy RTS games, but I really love Rise of Nations.

Helps that the lead designer also helped do Alpha Centauri though.

F-Zero GX. I usually don't give a damm about racing games, but this game kept me busy for a long time, until I unlocked all the machines, the animated shorts for all pilots, and could win the diamond cup on master with my eyes closed.

It was just that awesome.

Also: I normally don't absolutely adore suvival horror. I think a lot of it's OK-ish (I liked RE 4 well enough), but most of it just doesn't wow me.

But Eternal Darkness... There's just something special about it. Is it the sanity effects? The eldritch horrors battling it out? The likeable cast, especially Alex and Edward, even if most of them do die horribly? The delicious chanting of the gods as you cast spells? (PARGON! PARGON! PARGON!) I don't know, but I want that bloomin' sequel!

I love the hell out of Tecmo Bowl. Not even Throwback, as awesome as that was, but honest to god NES Tecmo Bowl.

Damn, the amount of people with a lack of love for racing games saddens me here.

Am I the only one here who likes them?

That's the exact reason I like them; nothing like a hyper-realistic racing simulator like Gran Turismo or Rfactor for me.

I'm not the biggest fan of JRP Gs in the world, but I make an exception for the Mario RP Gs and Chrono Trigger, which are some of the best games I've ever bought.

I'm also not a huge fan of FP Ss, but the two things that'll accept are Goldeneye 64 and Metroid Prime Trilogy.
