I didn't see a thread on it so...

So how do you guys feel? Personally I'm ecstatic.

Times change, I suppose. I would've been happy about this when I was younger, but now 4Kids is a deasd brand I feel like another part of my childhood has slipped away. Heck, even my teenage years- look at how frequently Yu Gi Oh The Abridged Series mentions them. It's almost going to become a legacy series now.

I don't know what'll be put in it's place, and whether this will indicate any improvement in the anime-translating field.

It's not like I watch any of 4Kids' properties anyway, so I personally don't give a crap.

If that is true, then I am both happy and sad.

I don't like how they handle things, yet I will have find another reason to troll purists.

Personally I am only concerned with Chaotic, which I really concern much.

Did I say I "concern much"?

I meant to say "I don't concern much"

If Chaotic goes down, I can have the freedom of not being constrain by canon or the name itself.

Well I was talking about the "Trolling Purists" thing.

Not That There's Anything Wrong with That.

I personally hope Funimation ends up owning the rights to the 4Kids anime properties, especially if it leads to uncut releases that are actually good.

Even if not though, 4Kids' death is Karmic Justice.

Dude, I'm the guy who preferred Robotech over Macross and likes the Super Mario Bros movie, and you're calling me a purist?

You DO know what that word means, right?

Yeah, I'm the angry anime purist around here.

I'm not sure how I feel about 4kids going up for sale. If anything, I think it's rather sad, even though I was never a fan.

For some reason, I have an impression that most of 4Kids's reputation was built on Accentuate the Negative based on a few dubs rather than the entirety of their output. From what I've heard only One Piece and Tokyo Mew Mew were screwed particularly badly (and perhaps Pokemon Chronicles) while most of their output merely suffered Bowdlerization that didn't wreck the story that much. And of course, there's their well-received Pokémon dub, which incidentally they crammed a lot of innuendo into. Then there's their original productions Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003) and Viva Pinata which seem to be overshadowed by the aforementioned Accentuate the Negative regarding their anime dubbing. Overall, they don't seem nearly as bad as their memetic reputation claims (and I have watched Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, a bit of Shaman King, and a bit of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003))

.... You're fecking kidding me! Yu-Gi-Oh wasn't wrecked? Sonic X wasn't wrecked? I never watched them but I've heard Ojamajo Doremi and Shaman King were wrecked too—and knowing 4Kids reputation, I believe it. They also screwed up Ultraman Tiga (though they at least had the decency to do an uncut release of that, and a complete one too). These things suffered from much more than just removing the offensive parts.

Pokemon actually was a good dub, but I personally think Nintendo must've put their foot down to keep them from changing too much of it.

And it just gets better from there!

In regards to Yu-Gi-Oh, you're probably targeting the whole "shadow realm" concept. Personally, I didn't find that any less hokey than, well, anything else about the show, and I thought that the Large Ham courtesy of Dan Green and the other voice actors well made up for it by drawing more attention to the inherent ridiculousness of the concept. As for Shaman King, our page looks upon it as satisfactory, although I didn't watch enough of it to be sure. People tend to like Kirby: Right Back At Ya! as well.

Really, though, I've learned there's orders of difference between "fanboy bad" and "bad", so the over-the-top 4Kids hate makes me sceptical.

I'm meh. I really didn't have any complaints with them. I liked the Sonic X dub, and they had one or two good shows.

Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.

I liked the Sonic X dub. Then again, I hadn't seen the original at the time (or now), so I doubt my opinion is valid here.

As far as I was concerned, Sonic X was already Adaptation Decay incarnate, so I have no idea which manglings of the source material were perpetuated by the original anime and which ones were 4kids' fault.

What irritated me the most about the censorship of Yu-Gi-Oh was that it was so clumsily done. IIRC, there's one scene where Tristan makes as though to punch Joey, there's a surprisingly abrupt cut to Yugi's shocked face, then a cut back to Joey looking beaten up on the ground, complaining that Tristan "pushed him". That's just sloppy. Also, the Shadow Realm business wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't been for the ridiculously contrived situations which resulted from it, such as a monster called the Man-Eater Bug that sends its victims to the Shadow Realm, or the spinning saw blades that send those who touch them to the Shadow Realm, or the pit with an unseen portal to the Shadow Realm hovering above the ground to catch those who fall down.

I agree, but the English voices (don't speak Japanese, so I can't judge them) were horrible too. It's like they honestly tried to pick the worst actors suited for the roles.

Oh, I am glad to hear I'm not the only one to dislike the Sonic X voice acting. I was really quite irritated, but I thought that was just me.
