@Ninety: You can PM me about stuff that causes apathy to turn to antipathy, it's a fascinating and cringeworthy topic.

It was supposed to build up WV using the ring to fight Jack, which never ended up panning out. Why WV apparently dreams in the Dream Bubbles, I don't know.

“Why do you want to go to the movies?” asked Smorgaz. “Don’t you see everything?”

“I do,” said Zap, “but it’s more satisfying in surround sound.”

Okay that's pretty good.

I don't think so. At least, I don't think we're ever gonna get to see it, if so. Also, Psyche, your new avatar— is that Megatron's sexy holovatar?

Yeah, I thought not too.

Also, yes it is! Complete with Pagan Min quote. It's a shame I couldn't find an image that was bigger.

I can't tell if that issue was one of the best or one of the worst in the TF run, but I did like the character designs. Megatron's was great.

I felt like it was sorta undercooked and the emotional payoff wasn't as good as usual (not like say, the recent issue on Rachet), but still a good concept with enjoyable things in it. Same on the designs; I love that Cyclonus as a human is apparently some weird angry Victorian lady, it's perfect.

I agree. Ratchet's issue, with Ten, was probably the emotional high point kinda like a combination of issue 22, and the Hedonia one. Great send off. This one, it really went overboard with the references, and I hate saying it, but there were way too many. Swerve's speech at the end was good, just stuck with all the clutter.

The high point was seeing the Avatars, and I'll even admit, that's going into the reeeeeaallly fanficy territory. I still loved it. Megatron's was great, Nightbeat being Idris Elba was great, Skids being the 9th Doctor was great, Cyclonus's avatar and Rung's looked really good (loved Cyclonus's cheekbones). Though I miss Punk Whirl.

As Transformers nerds how do you feel the humans and the Earth setting fit into the series? Does it work better when it's just big ass robots on big ass robot world or do they really bring something to the series? I say this because I thought the holovatars were a neat workaround to dorks being upset no one noticing the cars are empty but knowing they talk weirds me out.

I'm one of those "I'm here for the bots" kinds of fans. Even if the movies were good, they'd still go with a Human-Focused Adaptation and it just wouldn't be that interesting.

Humans usually feel like a forced way to give the audience something to identify with, despite the fact that the bots provide the same thing. And it especially annoys me when they try and bend the plot to make the Humans important, and try to push the "everyman can take down the big scary monster" narrative.

Having a lot of them be really annoying has not helped (looking at you Sam Witwicky).

At worst they can be grating, at best unnecessary, and the comics are all the better without them.

That said, I really enjoy Human Villains. Tim Curry in Rescue Bots is really fun, Silas in Transformers: Prime gave the series its most disturbing episodes, even though I felt he was kind of overpowered, and Kelsey Grammar in the 4th movie was great.

Earth itself is a decent setting, but going to other planets and seeing new sic-fi ideas is sorely lacking.

I have a feeling we're all gonna talk about meaningless homestuck stuff for days during that pause. So...

I started watching Death Note recently, and I like it a lot. I like a well written case of Villain Protagonist. Sort of. I'm at episode 7 as of this post.

I'm actually a Poser Transformers Fan, but I'll put in my two cents. I definitely agree with the comics angle; I love how the comics are when it's just completely about the robots. I love the kind of sci-fi stories and concepts they come up with when they get to write alien robots, I love the fact that they're still recognizable as people, I love whenever it's apparent that they are definitely not people and can take morality in completely different ways as huge, powerful immortal robots. Humans have popped up again recently in some of the issues, and even if they don't take a lot of space, it's still jarring, especially with some of the recent plot developments "The Enigma of Combination caused all of human progress!!!".

Shows though, I'm a lot more okay with humans being in them. I like the comics a lot and prefer them to pretty much everything else, but the main media/canon are the shows, which are all pretty much "Teens/Kids/One Kid That Maybe Also isn't One team up with Cool Robot Cars". And those are fine. I like Prime's take on it a lot, especially post-S1; the human characters are fun and can contribute while the focus is on the big robots fighting each other. Haven't seen much of Animated and G1, beyond what I remember of the former as a kid.

Anyways, TL;DR, the shows are more adventure than sci-fi most of the time, and it's acceptable for the shows to just be what they are. The comics shine for showing the more involved, sci-fi aspect of the mythology, but both are important parts of the Transformers brand as a whole. Those, and toys. Many, many toys.

Bayformers are... Bayformers.

I agree with your first paragraph, about the bots being both human and alien.

As for the cartoons, yeah The cartoons are for kids, and thus they have kids to recognize with. But after watching them handle Miko, I got sick of it all. That said, I'm surprised at how much I did like the humans in Transformers: Rescue Bots. Maybe it's because I see it as a kids show rather than a Transformers show, but the main characters are fairly fun and likable.

But them's the demographics: Cartoons are for kids, need kid appeal, Comics are for teens and up, and don't need said appeal.

I'm really looking forward to the Machima series, that should be interesting.

As for Death Note: Light's a great villain protagonist, always devious, always an asshole and an egotist, and never "too" ahead of everyone.

I actually... kinda liked Miko, by the end? Like, yes she screwed up in the exact same way over and over again and they never just like, kept her in her house once in a while. But after everything in S2, I ended up appreciating her a lot more. I like that the rebellious teenage girl archetype in the show was also the only Asian character, that instead of being a studious and dutiful Asian girl, she got to make a lot of bad decisions and couldn't be stopped in making them, as frustrating as it sometimes got. I like her relationship with Bulkhead and Wheeljack; the mini-arc in S2 when Bulkhead is on the brink of death and Wheeljack and Miko go off to avenge him one of my favorite bits and I was really glad when she got the Apex Armor to beat the shit out of Starscream. And compared to the other two kids, which are respectively the Designated Boy Protagonist who gets all this praise and relevance for pretty much no reason and The One Who Was Smart, she stood out the most.

Like, the flaws are glaring and sometimes painful when it comes to her writing, but I still find things to enjoy about her character and who she represents. I think if they have her more of an arc, explored her character more in why she acts out, the environment she came from, and had more of a message for her to learn and understand, they could've actually had a really good and really valuable narrative. But, well, Prime was really about the robots, and I don't know where you'd fit all that.

In the end though, the best humans were Fowler and Silas. This has taken up a lot of space. I think if we continue this or whatever, we should take it elsewhere.

Alright, I'll PM you, maybe tomorrow, I gotta go to bed.

But I will say, the rebel archetype has never been my favorite, Watching RID 2015, I find myself groaning at Sideswipe's antics, and probably more amused than I should be at Rodimus's fuck-ups in the comic.
