Honestly, if they just made HM moves forgettable, that would solve like 90% of the issues I have with them.

The way Ride Pokemon are implemented are pretty much perfect, though. You can have whatever party you want and never have to run back to the box and withdraw something else. I had an Ice monotype and couldn't get any water types til Poni Island, but I was never barred from progressing because of the Ride system. You can have weird teams or even solo the game with one Pokemon all you want with it.

I could see them changing it up, but I hope they don't, since for once they implemented a new feature that's about as good as I ever see it getting.

Though Talonflame really should've been the Glider and not Charizard- At least it's in the 'dex.

I sure said that!

Isn't Talonflame smaller than Charizard though?

[up][up]The Ride Charizard is still way bigger than the 'dex says it should be.

I could see it done up as a hanglider arrangement with the rigging dangling from Talonflame instead of mounted on its back.

Hmm. Now that the fast travel is separated from HM 02 Fly, I guess the method of transportation doesn't need to be flying anymore. I would be all for having a Gogoat zoom you there or having certain Pokemon using teleportation.

Mudkip's final evolution is in fact NOT Mudkipperino.

I think that, while H Ms weren't usually all that good as moves, removing all field moves was a bad decision. Teleport had a real niche use (though it was usually overshadowed by Fly), and Dig was so useful, and I had to trudge my way through Vast Poni Canyon SO many times because I wasn't going to waste money on an Escape Rope when I was saving up for absurdly expensive T Ms.

Umm... so, personally... this is the first time this has happened, so I'm a bit surprised. Only a centimetre away...

You can just Fly out of Vast Poni Canyon, though? You do have leave the cave sections, but it's not like you need to walk all the way back to Ancient Poni Path.

Hey, can anyone give me a hand? I'm trying to complete the Alolan Pokedex, and I need to trade some pokemon so they can evolve into their final forms (y'know, Magmortar, Scizor, Politoed, etc). Can anyone help me out?

H Ms may be bad, but outright removing field moves is not a good measure.

Tbh, I think the Pokemon they should have gotten as the gliding mon should have been Salamence.

It's also in the Dex and it's the right size.

My counter-criticism of the Ride Mounts is that it marginalizes all the other other Field Moves. Things like Dig/Teleport (which save on Escape Ropes), Sweet Scent (Which does what Honey does only better), Cut (not just for trees but for mowing Tall Grass, a mechanic that was in the first 3 generations and in Emerald you could buff it with Hyper Cutter), Rock Climb (Although they should make it a Rock-type move), Defog, Whirlpool/Waterfall, Dive, and even the HP-staring element of Softboiled.

On the subject of ride mounts, what is the point of Mudsdale Gallop? Ostensibly it would be another roadblock-solving move like Tauros, Lapras, and Sharpedo, but there aren't any rough terrain patches until you get it, so it's kinda pointless.

Cut hasn't worked on grass since Gen 4, though.

The others I'll give you but I think a good alternative would be to just unlock those somehow as optional Ride Pokemon. Like a Girafirig that can teleport, a Meganium that uses Sweet Scent when you press B, rather than dash, or a Rhydon that can Dig (and may double as a means of getting around underground areas.)

I think Mudsdale is a Ride Pokemon solely so that a gen VII Pokemon is part of an important new feature.

I do like Ride Pokemon making is so HMs are required, but people using their Pokemon for stuff they couldn't normally do otherwise was kind of a big part of the lore.

Plus i think it's a neat bonus to let some moves have out-of-battle effects, adding utility to mons while not making it mandatory. The fact that it's not available bugs me, since I'm already pretty on the getting rid of HMs thing in general (though I do agree that it's way better gameplay wise and i like it).

I'd prefer if they combined Ride Pokemon and H Ms: you can summon Ride Pokemon to get you past roadblocks, or you could use one of your own Pokemon that happens to know the move, bonus points if you can ride on some of your own Pokemon.

That or just keep HM moves, but be allowed to make the HM users into Ride Pokémon that you can summon from your PC boxes to use them along with a full team.

Or decouple field moves from the concept of "moves" entirely, and just make them things your Pokémon are simply capable of once you get the right badge/crystal/clearance of some kind. Like, beat the fourth gym, and now any Pokémon you have that has wings or some other means of levitating can fly you to other cities, even if it can't learn Fly.

Granted, this solves one major problem HM's had (taking up a move slot with an often subpar attack), but doesn't solve the problem of requiring you to have a Pokémon that's capable of learning the HM, though that can be solved just by expanding the list of Pokémon that are allowed to perform each of those field functions.

About the "marginalizing other field moves" part, I believe those could be kept along with the Ride Pokémon, just like they existed alongside the old HM's. I don't miss the small trees that needed to be Cut, though. Not at all [lol]

... And that's called jazz!
