Pokémon General Thread

Luck is a factor in pokemon gameplay, always has been, always will be. Expecting to have control over every little factor for the best possible outcome is unrealistic and goes against the game's core design.

That it's random isn't the issue. The current IV system renders individual Pokemon much better or much worse in an objective sense. A different system that allowed for overall equality while still varying stats would be a little better, in my opinion.

Something like if every Pokemon has a set total of IV's, but how they're distributed is random. Sort of like an uncontrollable EV. That way, you at least don't have Pokemon with 31 IV's in every stat vs. one with 0 in every stat.

Either that, or some sort of compensation for Pokemon with a low IV total. I was thinking of ways to implement a "luck" stat for some reason and one of the ideas I had was that the higher the IV total, the lower the cap on the stat would be. Something like that so that it's a balancing act between good IVs and good whatever the other thing is would help, at least.

... I'd say that this is the weirdest subject for a class I've seen, but I've seen Yale have classes on how to solve the Rubik's Cube.

Unfortunately, I don't really know much about the class beyond the fact that it's a thing, it starts next week, and that I desperately want in.

Regarding what the course is, it's more or less a "joke" course. It's not the sort of class you take for credits towards your major, more as a thing to do on a lark and help push you over cumulative credit total requirements. (Took an alike course in Freshman year regarding the topic of Video Games as an Art Medium. If you're curious as to what else is being taught this fall, that site should have a course listing of similar "joke classes" for the semester.)

I'm not fully certain how they're going to run the whole application process, seeing as they vary widely among these classes. Some are a simple matter of showing up and signing up, others go through a randomized or in other cases pretty darn rigorous student selection process.

But if I get in, I'd have no problem sharing my two cents on what's going on in-class.
