Trajan was one of the most successful emperors, and presided over Rome at its greatest territorial expansion. So he's a good choice.

I was looking at some of those videos and of course Tomyris' has a lot of "she probably didn't really do anything and was only chosen due to being a feeeeeeeemale" comments. You Tube comments, I think, were likely invented by Satan himself. tongue

I know about Trajan largely because of the Interceptor franchise, wherein the Terran Overlord Government adopted a Roman motif and venerated him. Hmm.. we don't seem to have that as an article. I wonder if it's listed under the parent universe.

Ah, it's Renegade Legion, and we don't seem to have an article. FASA is the only place it's mentioned. Sad.

Trajan's still got that massive column somewhere in Rome, which depicts his utter humping of the Dacians of modern day Romania.

I knew him - because I had Latin courses in school, and the best part was not the language, but Rome's insanely cool history. We had to make a series of presentations of the Emperors, I got Trajan, and I remember bragging about getting the Emperor under whom Rome was as its largest (I was 12, mind you).

It looks like a great wide civ, it's nice. V ended up mostly favoring tall empires, so I hope civs like that can help balance things out.

[up] Though as this very own wiki notes, even in V, Rome's special ability is one of the few that encourages going both tall and wide. Glad to see that the Legions keep their road building ability. And starting with a trader and roads automatically connected to Rome is an awesome ability.

Is it just me, or does Trajan look a lot like Julius Caesar in Astérix?

Firaxis ran a livestream (skip to 13:45) earlier today, showing off combat with Rome and city growth with Kongo.

It's not just you.

[up][up][up][up] I know, but in higher difficulties, tall gameplay was much, much safer.

Given that I know myself, and know I'm going to end up buying all that DLC anyway, I think I'm gonna preorder the deluxe. But on the other hand, it's a bit of a leap of faith preordering the game on the assumption that the Mac version is going to show up eventually, and all I'd get is Montezuma for a couple months anyway.

On an unrelated note, it does kind of bug me a little that the one (non-Egypt - but then it's also Ptolemaic Egypt in this game, which still adds to it) African Civ is one characterized by the way they're swayed by foreign missionaries, to the point where they're locked out of having a religion of their own. I'm used to the Civ series coming from a fairly Western perspective, but it seems especially obvious in this game in contrast to V.

I think the original V game only had one African Civ (the Zulu) and Egypt. Ethiopia, Morocco and Songhai were added later.

And the Zulus were kinda defined for rushing at people with their spears for a long time (Impis can't upgrade until you research Rifling if memory serves), which is the British colonists take on their civilization too.

V started out with Egypt and Songhai.

[up][up][nja]I just looked it up Egypt and Songhai where the only two African Civilizations in the base game.

Ethiopia was added in Gods & Kings; Morocco and the Zulus were added in Brave New World.

If you got Brave New World but didn't get Gods & Kings Ethiopia was included.

Oh, my bad then.

...well the point still stands that the only black african civ was one of looters and pillagers, using mud to build stuff and all being able to use canoes.

BTW, the reason for my mistake was a "narrative let's play" performed by a French videast named "Joueur du Grenier". He parodied a French-German TV show that uses maps to talk about history, except that instead he told the story of the rise of the French Civilization, who as everyone knows settled its city of Paris in Eastern China, and fought many early wars against the Zulu Empire that settled Siberia..

He used all the "famous" civilizations for the series: France, America, Greece, Arabia, Egypt, China, Germany, Aztecs, Arabia, and Zulu. That's why I assumed those were the civs in the original game (even though he is playing BNW).

Gil looks just as smug as the anime version. I can already hear it... MONGRELS

I do hope that leader ability applies to Gil's units as well otherwise it does not seem to provide any bonus for him

Ah, now we fight like men! And ladies! And ladies who dress like men!

Not sure about his abilities, because it looks like a strong contender early on but his bonuses don't look to be as frightening as, say, Attila's.

...well the point still stands that the only black african civ was one of looters and pillagers, using mud to build stuff and all being able to use canoes.

Specifically, Songhai got some criticism because they used Askia Muhammad when they evidently meant to use Askia Daoud, so they portrayed a leader primarily known for education, religion and trade reform with a personality centered around looting and pillaging.

Though to be fair, it's not the only time in that game alone where their leader portrayals had glitches one way or the other. There's also them botching Gustavus Adolphus' appearance.

Either way, my issue isn't the number of African Civs, it's the fact that both African Civs in this game are primarily characterized by the times European powers had control and influence over them. Which is interesting, since most of the prior examples are arguably more the opposite.
