Thank god for Story and Gameplay Segregation, since Flareon is by all accounts the weakest of the Eeveelutions. What a shame, it's so cute too.:3

glaceon and leafeon are the coolest 2 of the eeveelution. in platinum i have a glaceon lvl 67 and a leafeon from lvl 39. i was trying to learn leafeon leafstorm and frenzy plant but i didnt play platinum anymore when i got soulsilver. i dont know if i can learn it to her. it worked at venesaur and sceptile to give them leafstorm and frenzyplant only magenium and it is completed.

o yeah i have received another soulsilver and there im going to do exactly as what you did ace of scarabs. i call the characters the same and the pokemon to. i will follow every step from your blog, so i can opserve your teamsets and tactics.

Stalker sense tingling... I don't know whether to be amused or creeped out. wild mass guess

To get Blue to return to Viridian Gym, find him moping around the remains of Cinnabar.

(Ecruteak Dance Hall)

Sakura: My Jolteon will test you next, Mari.

(Gnaw looks up with interest, even while being slathered with generous amounts of Burn Heal ointment.)

Mari: No, Gnaw, you're in no shape to keep going and need to rest up a little.

(Gnaw looks kind of disappointed.)

Sakura: Who are you planning to use, hmm?

Mari: I... (palms pokeball) ...think I know who to use.

Sakura: As long as I believe, I will win! Go, Kero-chan!

As the Jolteon Kero-chanCerebrus landed, it immediately shot a pulse of electricity at the burst of light that signalled Mari's pokeball opening, only to hear a strange sound of electrical buzzing increasing in tempo.

Anticpating an attack, Cerebrus darted to the side swiftly...

Punch!

...And just in time too, as a black-streaked yellow form struck where it had been a moment previously, flames bursting at the point of impact.

Sakura: No way! You got an Electivire?!

Mari: Thanks to my friend in Sinnoh. Sosuke, don't waste your Thunderbolts on it!

(LP Note: Both Electivire and Jolteon are effectively immune to electrical damage thanks to their abilities Volt Absorb and Motor Drive. It's nice to use such nullifiers in team building, as they remain relevant in a world where Gyarados lures lightning bolts for you easily. Fun things include repeatedly Baton Passing Substitutes by healing Jolteon with absorbed lightning, or using a Thunder Wave to give Electivire that much-needed speed to sweep.)

Cerebrus muttered angrily to itself as it dodged and weaved, avoiding the furious Motor Drive-boosted attacks of Sosuke. Flowers of fire and ice blossomed under the Electivire's fists as he launched the elemental punches ferociously in an attempt to win before the Motor Drive boost wore off.

Riding the force of Sosuke's punches, Cerebrus flipped into the air, and used the stiffened hairs in its mane as static-powered projectiles.

Sosuke's own hairs pricked as he sensed the static buildup, forewarning him of the incoming Pin Missiles. In his hastiness, he chose not to block, but to dive through them in an offensive grazing move. Several of them stuck into him, disregarded, as he managed to clip the Jolteon in the side with an Ice Punch.

Mari: That's how you fight according to your nature! Keep it up, Sosuke!

(Gnaw nods in approval as he sips an Elixir energy drink from the sidelines, the Burn Heal working wonders on the scorching he had received from Sacchin's Flareon.)

Sakura: Don't fall behind, Kero-chan!

Cerebrus winced as it landed, the numbness from being struck by Ice Punch affecting its speed slightly. Using its own electricity, the Jolteon struck itself with its own Thundershock to restore some feeling to its side.

(LP Note: This does not happen in a REAL ingame battle, you can't even target yourself like this in double battles!)

Sosuke scowled (even moreso than usual) when he saw Cerebrus do that self-healing trick, and lunged forward again, this time with Cross Chop ready.

Cerebrus nimbly leapt clear with Quick Attack-assisted speed, and began to strike rapidly from as many angles as it could, in an attempt to wear the much tougher Electivire out.

Sosuke stumbled and staggered as he weathered the barrage, waiting for the right moment to unleash Cross Chop. There! Right behind me!

(It's a critical hit! Cerebrus fainted.)

Sakura: Oh, no! Kero-chan!

Komomo: You need to teach it to be less predictable with its Quick Attack barrages, Sakura.

As some of us might remember, Sakura had Espeon originally (In fact, most of the Eeveelutions don't have their original Kimono Girl trainer in HGSS, Vaporeon being the exception). Jolteon makes it easier to use the CCS joke though.:3

Hahaha. couldn't resist that. I hardly ever use my e-mail these days, so it'd be more efficient to toss me PMs via the Tvtropes fora, or to post in my Contributor's Page Discussion (because I watch my own Contributor's Page and its Discussion using the Watchlist).

Anyway, most of the stuff you've been asking is old hat to someone who played the original Silver on his old GBC until he became intimately familiar with the olde Gen2 Johto.

Fallout 2, oh how you addict me like chems.

(cough) Anyway, I'm going on with the show.

(Ecruteak Dance Hall)

Komomo: You are indeed a skilled trainer, Mari.

Mari: Thanks. You girls taught your Eeveelutions some pretty cool tricks too.

Komomo: Are you ready for this last test? I trained my Vaporeon to make use of its other special ability very well.

Mari: You're still disadvantaged because of Sosuke's type strengths against Water.

Komomo: Am I? (smiles)

As Sosuke carefully pulled Kero-chan Cerebrus the Jolteon's pin missiles out of his hide, the pokeball landing on the field caught his attention. Instinctively, he shot a Thunderbolt at it.

A bright, rainbow-like burst of ice struck the ground as the Bolt arced, erecting a frozen barrier that caught the electrical attack and stopped it from reaching its mark.

A Vaporeon stepped out of the icy mist that resulted from the impact.

Mari: I didn't know Aurora Beam could do that.

Komomo: Ice is normally not so good at conducting electricity, but even a trace amount of salt added will help in that regard.

Sosuke realized, as the Vaporeon deflected another Thunderbolt with a slightly-saline Water Gun burst, that he would need to get creative with his attacks to win.

Using a trick he had practiced with Gnaw during their sparring and training, Sosuke began to use a circling, zigzagging movement pattern to slowly get into close combat range, dodging Aurora Beams and Water Gun bursts.

With a spiral of puddles behind him, Sosuke brought both arms up for a Cross Chop...

Splash

...Only for his arms to pass through a mass of water. Shocked, Sosuke stumbled a little as he nearly overbalanced, then an Aurora Beam impacted his back and made him fall forward.

Mari: No way! I read about Vaporeon having this ability, but I though I'd never see a trainer teach them to use it this way!

(LP Note: Vaporeon has the ability to partially shapeshift and hide INSIDE water, because its body and cells are very much like the actual liquid. Fluff over Gameplay narrative action!)

Komomo: my Vaporeon took a little while to get used to this kind of puddle-dancing though. I think your Electivire may be in over his head this time though.

As Sosuke fell forward, he realised that he had actually allowed the Vaporeon to surround him with a broken spiral of puddles of water, in such a manner that his Thunderbolts would not be effective for frying the whole pattern.

Vaporeon was jumping from puddle to puddle smoothly and swiftly with Quick Attack, circle-strafing and peppering Sosuke with a consistent barrage of Water Gun and Aurora Beam bursts. Each time, Sosuke's counter-Thunderbolts would end up earthed harmlessly in a puddle that Vaporeon was not in.

Mari: Not good...! Sosuke, try and figure out how to turn this to your advantage!

Good advice, though Sosuke as he barely sidestepped a burst of water, and then he nearly slipped as he trod on another puddle left by the Vaporeon.

Gathering himself, he realised that there was a trail of water behind him from all the barrages. An idea formed in his head, as ice encrusted his hands.

This is so audacious that it better work.

Komomo: I didn't know Electivire could learn Ice Punch.

Mari: Well, they can be bred it as an Egg move, and my friend in Sinnoh says there's a guy in the Pastoria region who teaches pokemon the art of Elemental punches.

Komomo: I wish my cousins from Sinnoh were here to help us.

(LP Note" I agree, it would have been interesting to face Leafeon and Glaceon as well.)

Sosuke began moving about the field, having temporarily stopped firing Thunderbolts as the Vaporeon continued to jump from puddle to puddle, harassing him endlessly with Aurora Beams and Water Gun bursts.

Instead, he began to spam Ice Punch, freezing puddle after puddle solid as he tried to hit the Vaporeon directly, forcing it to move quicker to avoid getting hit in the side.

Komomo: What's your Electivire doing?

Mari: Sosuke's figured something out now. I think I'm starting to understand his line of thought now (grins).

As the Electivire changed tactics for a more melee-oriented style, the Vaporeon began to panic, more shots going awry as its formerly elegant movement from puddle to puddle became a little jerky and stuttering as it had to look harder for puddles to jump to and fro amongst.

Sosuke had stopped trying to dodge the Aurora Beams, using his Ice Punch power to catch and deflect the beams into the floor and using the slipperiness to slide after his target.

Barely dodging a frozen fist, Vaporeon desparately darted to the side, hoping to find a puddle.

crackle

Unfortunately, it was a frozen puddle, and Vaporeon's body temperature plummeted as it hit the cold surface bodily, causing it to freeze itself. It was therefore unable to dodge the follow-up Thunderbolt.

(It's super-effective! Vaporeon fainted.)

Komomo: Oh, that was a fantastic counter-strategy your Electivire though up for himself!

Mari: Thanks, I'm pretty impressed that he thought to turn Vaporeon's own Water and Ice attacks against itself.

Komomo: Anyway, you have bested all five of us in this test, and proven your worthiness to meet the Guardian of Johto's seas.

Tamao: Meet us in the deepest caves of the Whirl Islands, out in the waters between Olivine and Cianwood.

Sakura: I hope you can get there within the week!

Wait, if pure water isn't a very good conductor. Why would adding salt make it less so? Also how the hell did Vaporeon manage consistently lace it's attacks with salt? And why the hell am I trying to make sense of this?

Time For Science!!

For electricity to flow, you need a way for charges to move. In metal, electrons are bound very weakly to individual atoms, making it easy for them to flow across the whole mass in response to electromotive force.

In pure water, however, the Hydrogen-Oxygen covalent bonds are much stronger; there aren't any free electrons to flow.

However, when salt (say, for instance, Sodium Chloride (NaCl)) is dissolved in water, the chemical breaks into positive Na+ ions and negative Cl- ions floating freely in the liquid.

Since they're in a liquid, these ions can flow freely, and since they're charged, their motion can carry electricity.

(However, when salt water freezes the salt actually gets forced out of the structure, so that part doesn't work so well. Good to know if you need fresh water in the arctic, though.)

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?

Oops on that regard, forgot that ice is usually not salty. Anyway, Vaporeon's biochem makeup does have some salt in it (mineral salts), plus it's a Water Type, which is weak to Lightning.

Also, there's nothing to stop Vaporeon from having a really salty meal before the battling began.

Vaporeon has the ability to partially shapeshift and hide INSIDE water, because its body and cells are very much like the actual liquid.

If you wondered why Acid Armor exists, this is why. Muk could probably do the same thing, sludgelike or otherwise.

On a related note here's my planned SS team.

  • Gyarados
    • Adamant nature
    • 252 attack/252 speed/6 hp
      • Dragon Dance
      • Outrage
      • Earthquake
      • Waterfall

My lead and primary physical sweeper, I'm using a fairly standard set because any of the bulky or anti-lead sets are too situational. It's moves cover most things, anything it doesn't will probably be overpowered by DD + Outrage anyway. DD will also help compensate for its lack of speed.

  • Typholsion
    • Timid nature
    • @Heat Rock
    • 252 sp.attack/252 speed/6 hp
      • Sunny Day
      • Flamethrower
      • Solarbeam
      • Focus Blast

My special sweeper, and my starter in my original silver file. So I picked this partly because of nostalgia. Other than that Thyphlosion does have excellent sweeping stats, monstrous sp.attack and good speed. However, like many fire types, it's limited by it's piss poor movepool. I had to go with a Sunnybeamer set just because I couldn't find any good non-fire moves aside from Focus Blast and the SS exclusive Extrasensory. The reason why I don't have the latter is because I don't want to go through the trouble of breeding another one in the middle of my resource starved pre-E4 file.

  • Dragonite
    • Naive or Hasty nature
    • 200 attk/52 sp attk/252 speed/6 hp
      • Outrage
      • Dragon Dance/Earthquake
      • Flamethrower
      • Extreemespeed

My mixed sweeper, if you could call it that. It's more like a physical sweeper...with Flamethrower. I'm also seriously considering ditching Dragon Dance so it isn't just Gyarados...with Flamethrower. With Extreemespeed it might not be necessary anyway. The EV spread looks a little wonky too, I may need some help with that.

  • Steelix
    • Relaxed nature
    • Rock Head
    • 252 hp/ 4 atk/ 100 def/152 sp def.
    • @Leftovers
      • Curse
      • Earthquake
      • Gyro Ball
      • Rock Slide/Stone Edge/Elemental Fang/Double Edge/Crunch

With Curse now part of it's moveset, Steelix's tanking potential has increased exponentially. Boosting it's already ridiculous defense, and attack. Even the speed reduction is beneficial for powering up Gyro Ball. The last moveslot is a toss up, Stone Edge is the most powerful but I don't want two low PP moves, Rock Slide has more PP but is only half as strong. One of the Elemental Fangs for type coverage. Double Edge and Crunch are good moves that I can spam repeatedly, are all options.

  • Umbreon
    • Sassy nature
    • @Leftovers
    • 252 hp/200 sp.def/52 def.
      • Payback
      • Moonlight
      • Yawn/Toxic
      • Psychic/Confuse Ray

I honestly had a hard time finding a good special tank to use. Sure I could have used Tentacruel and Mantine but I didn't want another pokemon weak to electric. I was already pushing it by using Dragonite. As for the moveset, Payback is a strong STAB move that takes advantage of Umbreon's low speed. Combined with Sunny Day, Moonlight restores 3/4th of it's HP, only offset by it's low PP. Those two are a given. What isn't is choosing between Yawn and Toxic. Yawn is good for catching pokemon but having to wait a full turn is rather annoying, not to mention useless against runners. Though if I do use Yawn I have free slot to put in Psychic to take care of fighting types. On the other hand Toxic + Confuse Ray is an evil combo, combined with Moonlight I can do some insane chip-tanking. Though using Umbreon at all means both my tanks will be weak to fighting, though in-game. Fighting types aren't that common so I probably don't have to worry.

And of course the last slot is an HM slave, I plan on using a Meowth early in the game, then move to Krabby and possibly Mew if I can get the event or transfer over from my Diamond file.

Comments? Suggestions?

I STILL aten't dead

Nope, I'm still alive, just very distracted by Klazart's commentary of Flash vs Movie, Fallout 2, and other things.

@Neo: Wow, that's a lot of power you're playing with. I'm planning to have Mari cycle out the hard hitters in my team for until the Red battle, maybe have her field some low-power pokemon for added challenge. I'll think up a reasonable justification of this as an in-story explanation - Gnaw and Sosuke take time off to R&R and train some of Mari's other pokemon in preparation for the Frontier, for example.

I might then segue into a LP of Renko tackling Poketopia under the sponsorship of my other Sinnoh Trainer from Diamond, Chris. Expect some Cipher cloak-and-dagger (read: made-up to fill the story action) to fill the gaps between Renko's official fights in the arenas of the Island of Revolutionary Battles.

A quick mini-update for now, featuring a wild Miltank encounter.

(Ecruteak to Olivine)

After a healing session and a night's rest at Ecruteak pokecenter, Mari takes her crew down to Olivine by land route.

Mari: Let's see what's on radio. (fiddles with pokegear Radio function) Hmmm, commercial... Oak discussing the virtues of Fearow with DJ Mary... Oooh, the Pokerap!

(LP Note: featuring that creepy guy Imakuni?.)

Wild Miltank was attracted by the music!

Mari: You're not from the farm, are you? (palms two Love Balls, one containing a ninja duck) Kenji! show me your mastery of False Swipe!

Kenji was prepared for release from his pokeball and shot forward before the Miltank could react properly, using an Iaido form to handle his leek as he struck out with False Swipe as his mistress ordered.

Unfortunately for him, he bounced off doing relatively little damage as the Miltank curled up protectively. Furthermore, he landed just in time for the Miltank to kick him with a fierce Stomp attack, which sent him back into the air again.

Muttering angrily under his breath, the Farfetch'd spun fiercely and used the Fly HM technique to control his trajectory, bouncing off several rocks and trees to build up his speed.

The Miltank naively trying to catch up, Kenji performed a complicated flip in midair and land on top of it with a perfect Eagle's Strike move, bringing his leek out, around, and then down with a perfect Iaido-styled False Swipe that knocked the wind out of the cow's sails.

Mari: Nice move, Kenji! (pitches Love Ball) Miltank, you're mine!

(LP Note: Love Balls are awesome because odds are one of your team will be of the opposite gender to any wild encounter you want to catch.)

Not really, I did something similar in Platinum and I didn't see any noticeable drop in difficulty, in fact I think I made things harder because I made all my sweepers bigger glass cannons than they already were. Fallout 2 continues to addict me D:

(Olivine)

Mari: Here we are. Gnaw, what did you think of Kenji's abilities?

(Gnaw shrugs and makes a dismissive gesture that seems to say "Eh, he's got pretty good kick for a duck without muscle.")

Mari: Strength isn't everything, you know.

(Gnaw shrugs in a way that seems to say "It sure helps to have some though.")

Mari: All right, I'll give you that.

Sailor: Hey, you seem to understand your pokemon really well!

Mari: Most of it is down to body language, so knowing how to play Charades really helps.

Sailor: Seriously?

Mari: 8 Gym Badges don't lie, man.

Sailor: Woah! You're really not kidding, then.

(One trip to the Olivine Pokecenter, one Wonder Card E-Mail from Nintendo WFC, and one Mew later, Mari lets her newcomer out of its pokeball.)

Mew: Squeak? (PSI-speak: What? Where am I? This isn't World's End Island!)

(LP Note: That's where the Gen 3 Mew was found in Emerald, you needed to take a Ferry and play tag with Mew on the Island.)

Mari: I-I heard that! That was telepathy, wasn't it?!

Mew: Mew. (Well, what do you expect from a Psychic-type?)

(Mew shrugs.)

Mew: Mrrrr. (Oh well, it was lonely being cooped up on that Island anyway. Maybe I can join your party?)

Mari: I suppose so, but please don't give away to other people that you can communicate with them! I'd hate to have researchers bugging us to participate in PSI experiments.

Mew: Mew, mrrrr. (True. Maybe I'll lay low in your storage box first? You can bring me out for training with Gnaw and the others later.)

(One storage trip later, Mari checks her travel kit again.)

Mari: Good, at least my Surf raft is still in good shape. All right, Gnaw, Krabby, it's time to hit the seas! (stomach growls) Errr, maybe after lunch, that is.

(Gnaw snickers, then looks sheepish as his stomach growls too.)
