I checked the logs. Seems to be an issue with a wordfilter plugin I was trying out. I removed it and the mute plugin. You say you can't place blocks either?

I went in, de-opped myself, and scoped it out. It appears that the issues you've stated have been resolved. I apologize profusely for the inconvenience.

Skip on the stone tools if you have iron tools. If they're about to break then make replacements.

Hello there!

I've started playing Minecraft about a year ago - slightly more, I think. Then it kind of got forgotten for a while, and a few weeks back I decided to try it again. My old save had a good wheat farm, plenty of cows and sheep, some redstone, and even the nether portal. But I decided to start a new map, and got a location on a bare island, with a sea temple visible on the horizon. With some swimming I've reached some sandy hills with cacti, and then a savanna with acacias, cows and sheep. Got a lot of fun out of all the glass I've smelted, but something was missing. So I got mods.

My favourite modpack, which goes by "Breakfast Special", is pretty fun. It includes Botania, Tinker's Toolbox, and a rather neat map mod. However, it's RNG likes mountains. I've tried to start a world there something like six times in a row, and always got mountains of some sort. Finally it placed me on a (hilly) island, from which I can see an oil spurt in the distance. Got killed quite a lot, until I've upgraded the base from a hole in the ground to a granite-and-limestone building. Need to find some lava, and the smelting will start.

Other than that, I've tried Resonant Rise, and something called "Fire in the Pipe". While certainly picturesque, I suspect they're too much strain on my already humble videocard. The other problem I have with them is that there is too much of everything. And here's where I ask for your help, or maybe advice.

I'll start with a standalone question: that thing where my pickaxe gets experience and random modifiers after I mine a lot, is it part of the Tinkers' Constructs or an add-on from a separate mod?

And here comes the ranting, feel free to skip it.

I'd like to find, or maybe make, a modpack to play off-line. If someone offers to craft this modpack for me, I won't say no, but I'm expecting more to get a walk-through on how to make one myself.

So, what I kind of mods I'd like. First of all, I want it to be a small pack. Maybe a dozen or less of "content" mods, and only the bare minimum of tweak mods. Botania, Tinkers' Constructs and Twilight Forest are required, as is Natura (if that's the one with Sakura trees, I might be thinking of Biomes o'Plenty instead). Optional: a single other tech mod, like Open Blocks or Progressive Automation; something with more plants and/or animals (Apple Milk&Tea has nice stuff, so does Harvestcraft, I've heard there was something with chocobos, too); a single other magic mod (NOT Witchcraft or Blood Magic... Thaumcraft and Chromati Craft look nice, but I know next to nothing about them). I will also add WAILA+Harvestability, Fast Leaf Decay and that one map mod, what's the name. I would like your advice on which of the listed mods I could replace with an alternative. Also, I want to add one content mod that I haven't tried yet (which is "most of them") but you have personally liked.

Thank you in advance, and if you enjoy stories of exploration more than any of that technical stuff, I can share some of mine, and will gladly listen to yours.

Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.

Personally, Thaumcraft is my favourite mod and you should totes use it.

On the pickaxe, I can tell you that the experience gain is not from base Tinker's Construct.

So, anyone looking forward to that Grimoire of Gaia mod update?

Grimoire of Gaia? Is it the one with the dryads, cat-girls and the humongous kill-o-taur that kept murdering me? What is the update going to be about? Also, who's that on your avatar?

@ Thaumcraft: What exactly you liked about that mod? For me, I enjoy Botania for the pretty flowers and for the concept of mana that's generated by nature.

I've been having a lot of fun with agrarian skies and techpocalypse which have some overlapping mods but some differing. Agrarian skies has Thaumcraft and is similar to the skyblock challenge but uses a really old version of minecraft since some mods haven't been updated. Agrarian skies uses the FTB launcher while techpocalypse uses the technic launcher. As a warning techpocalypse requires a LOT of food in great variety so it doesn't lose effectiveness but since I love all the cooking recipes I've really got a kick out of it. My latest venture has been into bee breeding which is on both packs and took a lot of investment but has been totally worth it.

The thing I like most about Agrarian skies is that it starts you with a quest book that explains how each mod works and gives you rewards for crafting/obtaining specific items so if you're just getting started with mods it's a great intro.

And so, I did check Thaumcraft. Pretty interesting. Then I checked for the latest version of it. Turns out, many of the mods I want to play, including Thaumcraft and Tinker's Construct, are for Minecraft 1.8.9 - except for Botania, Natura and Twilight Forest, who are all for 1.7.10 only.

So please, tell me, gentlemen (and ladies) - if I have a save in 1.9, but install some 1.8.9 mods, will I still be able to play it? Or should I just copy the seed and make-do with a similar world? Are 1.9 and 1.8.9 similar enough to play the mods for the latter under the former? I would guess not...

Nextly, what do I need to do to mod Minecraft? Download Forge, then what? Some "Mantle", or what was it?

[up]It would be a very bad idea to open a 1.9 world while using modded 1.8.9, and vice versa. It's a good idea to back-up saves (as in copy-pasting the world folders to somewhere else) so you don't accidentally corrupt them.

Re-creating the world with the seed would possibly make a similar world, although mods (like Thaumcraft) change parts of world generation.

Forge is required for almost all mods, so you need it regardlessimportant . IIRC, Mantle is the core mod for Tinker's Workshop? You should probably find out if mods you want need separate core files to run. (for most of them, the core files are on the same page as the actual mod) note

Also, it's a good idea to run Minecraft after installing each mod. If one causes a crash, you can know which one caused it.

Unrelated note: If anyone on the Troper server finds a chest inside of a jungle tree with my lockette sign, I need its coordinates.

Thanks, I think it worked.

Sadly, it looks like the Tinker's books were removed from the 1.8.9 version. What's up with that?

Did Microsoft do something or have trees never dropped saplings?

I finally broke down and hopped back on Minecraft. I dig the new flowers, I dig the new combat system (though I don't appreciate having my sword-spam to deal with zombie hordes taken away), I dig the new boats, I dig the shield mechanism.

I do NOT dig letting skeletons strafe (making skeletons more intelligent has at this point crossed the line into "not fun" levels of difficulty) or the aforementioned virtually no saplings from trees.

All in all, I'm having a good time. Finally got a good look at what exactly my own server is like.

This too shall pass.

Skeletons piss me off too, but I find the best way to deal with them is to have a shield in your off-hand slot at all times and hold right click when there's a skeleton attacking you (the shield protects from all attacks and arrows ricochet off it so you have a chance of killing the skeleton with its own attacks), then slowly get closer and once you're within melee range occasionally drop your guard to spam your sword.

Bears, huh? I wonder if they'll be tameable.

Another question about mods. In the game I've modded, I've started harvesting grass and got almost two stacks of seeds. In "official" modpacks, I would have gotten half an inventory of "(plant) seed" items and about half-a-stack of normal seeds instead. And I'm pretty sure Harvestcraft has been installed properly, because I've seen several "___ garden" blocks already. Is it something in the settings, or do I need a "glue" mod to fix it? Also, how do I pick up the "___ garden" blocks?

So I just booted the game up for the first time in a long while myself (since 1.0, in fact). Looking over the version history of every update, I've got a lot to catch up on. So far, the only new things I've discovered are the (rather nifty) combat mechanics, these tiny, annoying zombie things that don't burn in sunlight, the new rocks and a couple of new flowers.

So I'm planning on building a rustic-type mountain-top cabin and I was wondering what materials I should use. Normally I would use white wool and logs, but with all the new stuff I'm curious if there's anything that would work better? Maybe a new kind of log, or one of the new plank varieties? I'm using default textures if that's important.

And wouldn't 1.10 technically be 1.1?

[up] Version numbering doesn't work that way. The period is a delimiter, not a decimal point.

If you've been away since 1.0, you have a lot of catching up to do, but the core game mechanics are still the same: get wood, make tools, build shelter, get food, mine, make better tools, then do whatever you feel like. At some point, you might visit the Nether, or find the End Portal to kill the Ender Dragon (which is the game's nominal win condition). You might go deep-sea diving with Aqua Affinity enchanted gear or water-breathing potions. You might wander the world in pure exploration. You could round up animals and start a mega-farm. You can experiment with redstone to create vast, complex machinery.

If you want to experiment with building without any constraints, try Creative mode instead. That lets you pick from any object in the game without worrying about hunger, mobs, mining, etc.

Wow, and I called myself an oldbie, I've only been away since 1.7!

I agree, baby zombies are so annoying. They have too much HP for such a tiny hitbox and OP speed.

But yeah, creative mode is great for experimenting with building. In fact, that's pretty much the whole purpose of it. Unlimited materials, flying, can't take damage except by using cheat commands... yeah.

I want to play modded, but the mods I want (Tinker's Construct and Buildcraft) don't have versions for 1.9. What should I do
