Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Watching the first episode of Happy!.

Out of nowhere, Mister Blue has a wife and kids. This may be a mitigating factor which disqualifies him.

Gonna keep an eye on the Santa pervert though.

Speaking of discussion dates, I added the following commented-out note to The Last Jedi:

  • Please do not add any Complete Monster entries without going to the thread; please also wait until Scraggle and/or Lightysnake start discussion on December 29th. Even mentioning anything here, or anything at all at the thread prior to December 29, will result in a holler to the mods.

Now, the second Bad Guys villain.

so, what's our plot and who's our bad guys?

Now, after our intrepid Mad Dogs are thrown back in jail by an ungrateful system...now, hold on to your hats, this is the darkest arc in series. It starts with a young woman trapped, not knowing where she is, using her phone to frantically report she's been kidnapped...now, a body is found, mutilated, and with internal organs missing.

So, Goo-tak is investigating and discovers...freezers filled with human remains and organs. It's a syndicate that deals in black market organ dealing. There's a Disc-One Final Boss named Yang, who turns out who be working for the true master of the syndicate. Hwang Kyung-soon, AKA: Madam Hwang

Who is Madam Hwang?

Original an owner of a brothel, arrested and later released, she got into the organ trade and sex dealing. Girls are kidnapped, sold into sex slavery, or simply harvested for their organs...or one, then the other. Now, the heroes bust Yang's operation, with Goo-tak finding a still living victim ona slab, enraging him past the point of reason (as she reminds him of his deceased daughter, who Jung-moon supposedly murdered)...come episode 4, we see a montage of victims kidnapped for Hwang's operation.

We cut to the Bad Guys busting more of the operations: saving kidnapping victims, finding coolers filled up with human organs, kicking ass and taking names....or in Jung-moon's case, tricking and locking them in a freezer and just waiting until they're disabled. Hwang, they learn, is the head of the massive syndicate, with her hands in everything....the issue? She's also bought off a lot of cops. They find out Hwang's location...and we see her for the first time: she also indebts people to her in order to later take their organs...we see her talking to a victim's son, creepily using a doll to explain how much the human body is worth and points out the eyes are worth 130 million won (about 130K in US dollars), and then smiles creepily, asking if it's good or bad not to pay her back...then says his father owes her that much, and can't pay it back. So she's taking his eyes instead. She then has the beaten, broken man taken out, illustrates what she's going to do by taking marbles from the kid's hands and playfully tells the kid he needs to be his father's eyes before sending the father for the 'procedure.'

Unfortunately, one of Hwang's crooked cop buddies tips her off....and she orders a corrupt special team to be sent after them, using a group of kids she's taken to be trafficked as messengers. The orders? kill our heroes, however you like and bring her the corpses....our heroes fight through the building and end up in the 'before and after' room with a whole row of gutted out, disposed corpses, horrifying Woong-chul and leading to an awesome Even Evil Has Standards line from him to a crooked cop: "No matter how much you love money...there are lines you don't cross!"

Goo-tak gets to the fifteenth floor where he ambushes Madam Hwang and takes her hostage as she mocks that he won't make it out alive. Goo-tak's response? "Then we die together." Hwang, however, proves to be crazier or more fearless than expected and gleefully tells an army of her men that she doesn't care if she dies: in fact, whoeever kills them if she's dead can have her job. Goo-tak knocks her out, as he, Tae-soo and Woong-chul throw down until the cavalry arrives to save the day. Hwang is dragged off, sneering at Goo-tak she'll survive this jail sentence, too. Goo-tak angrily remarks he won't strike a woman, even one as evil as her...only for Mi-Young stroll over and give Hwang a right hook before she's dragged to prison, hopefully forever.

Heinous standard?

She runs an operaiton where lots and lots of people are forced into sex slavery or have their organs harvested. We see the kidnappings and the aftermath, and her utterly creepy demeanor at a kid who's witnessing his dad being harvested for his eyes. Hwang is probably the single worst on the show. Not even the Big Bad of the season, said corrupt prosecutor who murdered 15 innocent people as a way to make their families feel pain, rivals this sort of operation (and personally murdered Goo-tak's daughter, framing Jung-moon)

Mitigating Qualities?

When she has the poor debtor's eyes harvested, Hwang has the kid held back, smirking he's "too young" to see this...this falls apart because she spends a solid few minutes tormenting the kid, letting him slowly realize she's taking his dad's eyes and is clearly loving his fear and tears, before waving the bloodied dad in front of the boy and smugly informing him he has to be his father's eyes. She also refers to the kids she keeps as her 'angels,' but given they're all likely taken from people who couldn't pay worse debts and are destined for her operation?

Finally, she's crazy or brave enough to not really care if she dies, but I don't really see this as mitigating as she basically tries to screw over the heroes even if she dies out of sheer spite. As for her men...no real care. One guy is scared enough of her retribution to not talk until Tae-soon is literally stabbing his hand with pens to nail him to the table.

Conclusion?

One of the creepiest villains I've seen in a while and a clear-cut keeper

Agreed. The villain having an uncaring attitude regarding loved ones that may or may not be a focal point of what's supposedly driving their villainy isn't a diqualifier. They need to have actions that show that they either never really cared or don't really care anymore. Vocalizing it outright is optional, but it obviously helps.

Surprisingly, I actually made up the name "Ravok" all by myself. It wasn't until some months later that I searched the name and discovered that there was such an obscure villain with it. I mean, come on, it's PRIME supervillain name material!

'Yes' to the Bad Guys duo, 'No' to Stanley.

Now, I've got one final DC-related candidate for us...I'm rather unsure on this one, but the very nature of the character makes this a proposal I just have to make.

What's the work?

Ripper is a 2016 Batman Fan Film that was helped with getting its start by Batman fanatic and writer Kevin Smith.

The year is 1888. Inspector Frederick Abberline ('Cough' Gordon 'Cough') has begun investigating a nasty spat of crimes...their perpetrator will go down in history as one of the most fiendish people to ever grace the face of the Earth...

Who is he?

Jack the Ripper (WHAT A TWEEST) is the main antagonist of the short film.

What has he done?

Jack begins stalking the streets of London, cornering and horrifyingly butchering young prostitutes. One of them is described as being "turned inside out," another is seen to have her abdomen tore open and her innards ripped out, and Jack is seen cleaning his utensils numerous times, all coated in blood and comprised of various knives, saws, and pliers. Through these methods, Jack kills five women in gruesome ways.

Later, Jack attempts to continue his spree, cornering a young woman and preparing to murder her, when the legendary "Bat" that many Londoners have seen prowling around and fighting crime arrives and knocks Jack out.

Capturing him and preparing to hand him over to the police (I guess), this "Batman" interrogates Jack, who gleefully proclaims that he will go down in infamy throughout history due to his murders, and states that Batman doesn't scare him because he has seen "real fear" on the face of the women he butchered. He also giddily mocks Batman over how his crimes have driven terror into London and driven Inspector Abberline to near insanity with their brutality.

As Batman demands to know the reason for Jack's crimes, asking "WHY DO YOU DO IT?!", the film ends with Jack replying "Why not?" before devolving into insane laughter, made all the creepier by the blood on his face smearing across his lips to almost make some sort of large smile.

....Oh.

Oooooooh noooooo...

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

None. As Jack himself states, he committed his crimes for no other reason than fame, because he saw his victims as dirty whores, and because...he could.

Heinousness?

Only possible issue. This is a...short film, clocking in at barely twenty minutes, and though Jack zooms past every other character in villainy, the fact that he only has five murders might not be enough.

Now, something to note is that Jack actually wanted to continue his spree for as long as he could, and indeed nearly butchered another girl, and was only stopped by Batman's interference.

Overall, he gruesomely butchers five women, tries to continue doing so, and takes sick glee in how he has driven Abberline to near madness and the fact that he only did it because he could.

Final Verdict?

I'm rather unsure at the moment, but I figured a character who is an amalgamation of two of our most prolific CMs (Jack the Ripper and Joker) was worth proposing.
