Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

@ Freudstein: Weak [tup]. That movie sounds dumb, by the way.

@ Hidan: I'll abstain, but, and I think I've said this before, given who else got implausibly redeemed in this series I feel like the only reason they didn't dig up Hidan's head and have it sincerely apologize is because the author forgot about him. tongue

@ Captain America twist: I don't see what the point in in freaking out over one issue, honestly.

@ACW: A quick search reveals the movie with Duxton Chevalier to be Mr Accident, of which there is no Film page and only a YMMV page, and only the CM entry on top of that.

@ Hamburger Time: Freaking out?! WE'RE COMPLETELY CALM!

Re Batari: Going to vote no because of the reasons Lore Deluxe mentioned. The morality of her already harsh society in a prehistoric world with little rule of law gives her extenuating circumstances. She's just perpetuating what her society and religion already believes in. She doesn't sound like she takes the extra mile to be heinous by the standards of her people, and even if the other tribe has sympathetic reasons for what they do, they're still cannibals and contribute to the heinous standard. Finally, killing her son for trying to overthrow her doesn't sound as monstrous as it's made out to be. Of course she killed him, he proved to her that he was her enemy. It's not like she killed him for spilling coffee on her.

Now that it's Thursday...

Regarding Steven Universe, since OE and I have been watching it and are now all caught up: Nobody counts right now, but it's entirely possible for someone to in the end. This is a very optimistic show, with love and friendship as core themes, but loss and death are very, very much explored, and a number of the cast deal with a lot of trauma over the loss of a loved one. Pearl, for instance, has very clear issues and PTSD over Rose Quartz's death, and Amethyst is also very obviously not over it, and a multitude of other things. The consequences of war aren't shied away from as it's made explicit a lot of sentient beings have actually died in the past. The show handles this with a very tasteful maturity that's very surprising on a kids' show.

That said, every villain we've seen front and center A. isn't one or B. is redeemable. The exception to the rule so far would be Jasper, whose function has just been The Brute but with a promise from the showrunners that she's going to be a more complex character. That said, she's just a nasty brute who doesn't even come close to scratching the surface for this trope.

That leads us to the Diamond Authority. None of them have done enough or been characterized enough, but we should keep an eye on them. Especially Yellow Diamond whose brief appearance was enough to establish her as trying to destroy the earth and annihilate organic life on it out of Fantastic Racism and spite, with the very creation of the weapon she was using to do so being a heinous deed in of itself. And despite the nature of SU, the consequence of earth's destruction and the deaths of all humanity are abundantly made clear. So nobody counts right this second, but Yellow Diamond and Blue Diamond are candidates for the future, depending how it goes. We can cross that bridge when the time comes.

Yeah, lighty's pretty much covered everything I wanted to say regarding Steven Universe. No one counts right now but surprisingly for such an idealistic series, there are possible candidates. Given the tone of the series though, whether or not they'll stay that way or be redeemed is debatable, though they've certainly be treated with less sympathy than any other antagonist so far. If Largo wants to handle to the proposals for them when the time comes, I'm all for it.

Oh, that reminds me: The Witcher's final expansion, Blood and Wine comes out in 5 days. If nobody's reserved the effortposts for that one, I will, and be mindful of the two week rule. No "Count Bloodula/Lord Vino totally counts and we'll discuss in two weeks" either, please.

Yeah, after some reconsideration, I decided not to propose Jasper. I think my own interpretation of fusion was making me feel a bit more... strongly about her than most observers would.

Also, for reasons of setting, as well as the rather large piece of information that her son betrayed her before she killed him, [tdown] Batari.

@Ocassional Exister: At the risk of sounding bratty, I have stated twice before hand that I'd like to be the one to handle any future Steven Universe proposals. I mean, I'm not gonna throw a fit or lose any sleep if someone beats me to it, but I'd like to have some way to redeem myself after several bad proposals I've made.

As for Batari, I'm going to abstain because honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about her. I might change my stance later, but right now I'm not sure I can cast a solid vote either way.

Do we just put our names next to things? I am more than happy to continue being the Star Wars film example person; I also tend to see Marvel movies early through my connections, which helps with constructing arguments.

@Fried Warthog: Sorry, I've been inconsistent in following the forum recently. I assumed Largo asked to make the posts first, but I think it's fair that the person who gets to make the effort post/write-up is the one who asked to do it first. If that was you, then I have no problem with it.

Side Note: I would like to call being the one to propose anyone from the Far Harbor DLC for Fallout 4 if no one else has called that yet. So discussions would be on June 2nd since it released last week.

@ACW: It varies. Like Lighty said, if the DLC we're talking about is 30+ hours, or something like the Freedom Cry DLC from Assassin's Creed IV, that's perfectly fine.

Also in regards to choosing who gets to discuss who from which show or game or whatever, let's all remember that it's not a contest to see who's first. tongue Frankly it doesn't matter much on who claims which spot so long as we all agree to wait two weeks.

Final two Koontz villains from my list.

The First: Thomas Shaddack from Midnight

Now, Shaddack is a brilliant computer scientist with a tiny little issue: he has no capacity to care about anyone but himself. Now, when he was young, Shaddack was befriended by a Native man who worked for his father and affectionately referred to him as 'Little Chief.' Eventually, Shaddack murdered his friend and his own parents when he decided he outgrew them. In the present, Shaddack has taken over a town known as Moonlight Cove and is experimenting on the townspeople: transforming them into half-human, half-beast creatures that also kill anyone who gets too close to the truth. Shaddack's experiments are intended to wipe out the human conscience, but the beast thing is a nasty little side effect of the whole affair.

So, Shaddack ends up converting a majority of the citizens and things go...wrong. Death fills the streets as the beasts turn on everything living in the vicinity. without much recourse, the heroes kill Shaddack when he attempts to murder them, but it turns out Shaddack also linked the lifespans of everyone he's converted to his own heartbeat; should he die, they die. At he end, even with Shaddack's death, the majority of the town is killed. Shaddack's ultimate goal is the conversion of the entire human race to do everything he wants to them without restraint or remorse.

The second one?

Bryan Dracman from Dragon Tears

So, Dracman, AKA: Tick Tock, is a Serial Killer with an unusual power: he can pause time and also create golems that can do his bidding and hunt others. A violent misogynist, Dracman is known to pick people out of a crowd seemingly at random and inform them "tick tock, you'll be dead in 16 hours"...only to pause time so he can hunt them down himself or with his golems and murder them however he chooses before disposing of the bodies with nobody the wiser. Over the course of the book, we see his MO firmly in action, and it's revealed that from women, he also collects their eyes and stores them in preserving fluid in his house. He also doesn't hesitate to involve or hunt down children, either. Our hero, Harry Lyon, a cop, gets caught up in Dracman's hunts and becomes a target himself.

Oh, yeah: Dracman also despises his mother, and had kept her crippled and incapacitated in a nursing home, unable to speak or communicate. As an extra twist of the knife? He makes sure she knows exactly what he is and what he's doing every single time, giving her the knowledge of every murder he commits. When Lyon kills Dracman at the end and tells Mrs. Dracman about this, her only reaction is sheer relief and gratitude.

Of all Koontz's serial killers, I'd say Dracman is probably the nastiest of the ones I've read, really.

So there we go. A bit truncated but I was eager to get these off my plate. Both, IMO, are easy keepers.
