This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

@Deadbeatloser 22

Alright, I don't feel I started it, but I'll try not to do that again.

I would still try to improve my entry to keep it from getting deleted again (I wouldn't do it right away). I hope I could still do that, if I could.

Hi, I'm wondering if the reason I can't edit anymore is because, when I thought I was clearing up which trope names broke a rule by copy-pasting a link to the rules list on a whole bunch of pages, I was really just pitching a hissy-fit and/or temper tantrum about not being able to name a YKTTW what I wanted, especially after reading on Grandfather Clause about all of the other trope names which technically break a rule but are so ingrained that it's not important, so I'd like to apologize.

If I've been blocked for something else that I'm not aware of, I'd like to know so that I don't do that again either.

@Timstuff: In reviewing your edits, we found that you had been making some questionable entries about MLP, particularly in the Mr. Fanservice article. Along with a mild, but correctable, tendency to natter, our concern is that this may reflect a deeper issue that needs to be addressed. On the basis of our current content policy, we have no interest in hosting any trope examples that paint MLP or other kid-focused cartoons in a sexual manner.

We wanted to get you here so we could make that point clear. I hope that it is.

@Victor Zsasz 29292: Your reply confuses me. You admit to getting annoyed and vandalizing a bunch of articles with that message — which had to be cleaned up by other tropers, by the way — then offer an apology and a promise not to do it again. You do realize, I hope, that it's not quite as simple as that from our perspective? It doesn't help that it's been over two months since your suspension was issued and you only now see fit to come back here and ask for your privileges back.

I get the impression that TV Tropes is not really a serious engagement for you. Can you offer any good reason why we should reinstate you?

@k9feline5: I think that we weren't as clear as we needed to be in our initial communication with you about this. So let me elaborate a little bit.

First, the thing you were adding to ShootTheShaggyDog.Comic Books very specifically violates the rules of How To Write An Example, namely this one:

* Keep It An Example: Making a blanket statement on the behavior of '70s Live-Action TV may be interesting information, but it technically doesn't add anything new as an example. If you feel the information is important, then add it to the description instead of the examples. Examples are about specific works, the description is the general behavior of the trope. See Needs A Better Description.

We don't allow blanket statements as examples. If it happened in "a lot of places", find those places and write each of them up as an individual example. Stating "it happens a lot" is useless. Do the work and make the entries informative, not declarative.

Second, stating ownership of an example and your intention to put it back regardless of anyone else's opinion misses the point of what it is to have a wiki. We're collaborative here, and the validity of an example is not yours alone to judge. If someone deletes your entry, you are expected to use the Discussion page, PM's, and/or the forums to work it out.

We aren't going to let you edit again unless you demonstrate awareness and acceptance of these rules.

@Fighteer

Alright. I don't want to make this argument because I'm well aware that it could backfire and result in (what I feel) are 2 good entries deleted instead of one, but here it goes.

On the Shoot the Shaggy Dog page for Comic Books is an entry that's been on this wiki (as I recall) for years, back before STSD was split up into different pages:

•Any editorially mandated Cosmic Retcon where decades of continuity get eaten by a Negative Space Wedgie. The publisher doesn't just restart the title and ignore the old version. Instead, they write an ending where the old, no-longer-cool version of the characters must watch the Negative Space Wedgie annihilate their timeline and destroy everything they have ever fought, worked, loved, or dreamed for, and there's absolutely nothing they can do to prevent it (except work to ensure that a Replacement Goldfish universe will get created after they're erased). All this makes for a vicious Downer Ending for characters who were originally created to be very upbeat, and forces the new version to shoulder the blame in fans' minds for how the original ended. The various Legion Of Super-Heroes reboots are a good example, especially the 'End of An Era' story during Zero Hour. And Crisis on Infinite Earths gives us some other good examples.

I like this entry a lot. It's what inspired me to create my entry on group slaughters in the first place. The thing is, I'm not seeing much difference between this entry and mine. The only difference I see is that this entry does include some examples at the end. That's what I'd like to do with my created entry if my suspension is lifted. Bring it back only include some examples this time. The examples I'm thinking of would be Kole along with some Earth-2 superheroes in Crisis On Infinite Earths, the JSA group slaughter in Zero Hour, and the Freedom Fighters and a couple of Teen Titans in Infinite Crisis.

That's another bad example and should have been removed (I just removed it). It's easy to see where you went wrong if that's where you took your inspiration.

I'll lift your suspension, and I encourage you to go back to that article and identify specific examples of the phenomenon you are talking about. Trope examples are always more interesting when they are specific. I'd much rather read, "In [Work X], [Character Y] did this thing," than, "Generally happens a lot in these types of works."

We do have a place to engage in more declarative language, but it's not the main examples. Take a look at our Analysis section. That's where we encourage people to go who want to talk in generalities or get more in-depth as to the role of a trope in particular media.

One other thing: it was noted that also you got into a bit of an Edit War on some Harry Potter YMMV articles. This is the same thing we were talking about before: if there's a disagreement over an example, talk about it.

Hi - I added The Legend Of Korra to Romantic Plot Tumor, and got a suspension notice. When I checked my history I saw the editing notice telling people not to add this particular example (I'm not active in the "Korra" fandom, so I'm guessing the Love Triangle causes huge amounts of Edit Wars).

I honestly didn't see the notice the first time around. I feel like an idiot for missing it, but this was one of those times when something is right there in front of you and you just don't see it. Sorry!

(And I'll read more carefully in future).

I was reading the Rescuers page and found some irrelevant tropes that described a nonexistent plotline where one character turned evil. Looking over the history, I found they were all by pinkarray. I removed the entries, and added a note in the history referring to pinkarray specifically, which I believe was my only mistake. Aside from that, I was trying to preserve the validity of the Rescuers trope page. I even spent a couple hours separating tropes that referred to the first film and the sequel.

[up][up] Reinstated. We expect that you pay attention to %% notices, especially with very popular series. They tend to cause a lot of Edit Wars.

[up] Okay, now it makes sense. When you see a troll, you shouldn't engage in a who-will-snark-better combat. It simply makes a mess of things. You report those things in Ask The Tropers. Suspension is lifted.

In order to get an editing suspension lifted, we have to be assured that the issue that got you suspended isn't going to repeat itself.

In your case, you seem to have an issue with adding first person (usually in the form of "this troper") and Natter to articles.

I would recommend reading This Troper (ignore the seeming red link, it's there), Natter, Conversation On The Main Page, and How To Write An Example. Other articles of interest may be Example Indentation and Repair Dont Respond.

@Bored Me: We need you to read the wiki policies on How To Write An Example, This Troper, and Conversation In The Main Page, and agree to abide by them. This isn't an "anything goes" site where you can chatter about whatever interests you. Acknowledge reading and understanding the policies and we'll lift the suspension.

Or I could get ninjaed by ccoa.

I'm not exactly sure what brought on my edit suspension, so could someone please let me know what went wrong. The message seemed to imply that I don't take my editing seriously, which I feel is hardly the case. I do recall the last edits I made were in the Legend of Korra. Is it possible to let me know what I did that was off the mark?

Well, I know it's a highly unoriginal thing to say on this thread, but if I did anything different from what I did in my last thousand edits I wasn't aware of it.

Currently co-writing a webcomic you can't read about on TV Tropes because the admins mistook it for porn.
