This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Got suspended, not quite sure why. Talkies?

I got a message saying I was suspended. Have there been any complaints about me or how I've edited? Is it because I'm constantly editing a single page due to a mistake like a non-functioning link? I'm still new to the editing process and of course have a lot to learn. Please let me know if there's anything about my resume.

~Erik Modi: Per your last edits and Ask The Tropers, you are adding natter and using bad Example Indentation despite messages asking you to correct them. Also, inappropriate placement of YMMV entries, lack of namespace usage in a few instances and some zero context examples.

~Agent Skyblue M 7: You are using a nannybot or some replacement script that is messing up the articles you edit.

Huh. I don't recall seeing any messages about bad indentations, but I'll keep an eye on that.

Natter, I assume, is discussion in the topic? I'll re-read those guidelines.

I know which YMMV you're talking about, and it didn't seem that way to me. . . but, I guess that more-or-less the point of YMMV. Sorry.

I was wondering if I could get my editing privileges back. It's been years since I was allowed to edit.

~Erik Modi: Those notifications are invitations to learn our style rules. It can be very challenging to get our users to go to the effort of doing this; while we encourage "jumping in feet first", it can lead to serious problems if issues are not immediately dealt with.

One key thing to remember is that the articles are not chat rooms or forum topics. Think of any wiki that you've read. The articles do not contain internal arguments and digressions; they are a single voice speaking to the reader. In addition, many of the concepts that we broadly label as tropes are highly subjective or are based in audience reactions rather than anything factually present in the work itself. We keep those separate, unless they are expressed by characters In-Universe.

~Tomodachi: I reviewed your recent forum posts again. I see little evidence that you've made an effort to improve your English.

I don't know what's wrong with me. I haven't been able to improve my english!

I seriously and honestly don't know what either of those are or how they're messing up the pages (they seem fine to me), but it would be helpful if I had an explanation. I did install some programs to censor words, but I thought it only applied to my browser and had no effect on the website itself. I could use the help.

Any script or plug-in or such that changes or deletes words as you view pages is what we call a "nannybot". The problem with these is that when you open the edit page your bot will also removes/change said words there, and as a result, without knowing, you'll save the page with all of those changes included. We don't want that.

The solution is that you switch off that bot when you're on TV Tropes, or make an exception for TV Tropes on that bot's settings. Will you do that?

What else do I need to do to get my editing privileges back? I know I didn't make much of an appeal, but I already said it before: I don't know how to make an appeal at all, or what else to add to said appeal. I promised that I would never commit the offence(s) that caused my ban in the first place, but it's just ignored completely.

I think I should switch it off while editing. It only seems to apply to Chrome. Firefox doesn't appear to be affected.

~Bagons Be Bagons: You were not intentionally ignored, just overlooked. As a relatively minor issue, your privileges can be restored, but please take care not to make messes for other people to clean up.

~Agent Skyblue M 7: It is not enough to promise to switch it off when editing. You must either remove it completely from your computer or add a specific exception to disable it on tvtropes.org. Otherwise you'll forget one day and it'll be back.

Okay, I understand. Thanks for the warning about the pages getting messed up. It only seems to happen in Chrome while Firefox seems to be unaffected. I didn't think it would actually erase the text, and that it was only hidden from Chrome. I'll be more careful about installing programs like those in the future.

So. . . can I have my editing privileges back?

Hello! My editing privileges have been suspended. I did receive the message about improper indentation, but I was under the impression that I had fixed it since then. I am sorry for not responding, I'm very forgetful. Anyway, could I have a better idea of what exactly the problem is? I would like to resume making edits and to avoid making similar mistakes in the future. Thank you for your time.

~Agent Skyblue M 7: I'll release your suspension, but if it happens again it'll be permanent.

~Erik Modi: Alright, you can edit again, but please pay attention to the rules.

~The Good Doctor: Despite notification, you're still doing it wrong. All entries in a given list must be at the same level of indentation.

Wrong:

  • Trope: example
    • Example

Right:

  • Trope
    • Example
    • Example

Further, a lot of the examples you added to TabletopGame.Psionics The Next Stage In Human Evolution are sketchy and don't contain enough information to make it clear whether they are actually the tropes in question. An example should contain enough information to allow someone unfamiliar with both the work and the trope to understand the usage.

Ooh! Ok! I get it. Thank you for letting me know and getting back to me so quickly. Sorry, I'm very busy and I've been hasty about things. I'd be more than happy to fix the indentation errors, now that I get exactly the problem, and improve the examples. I couldn't do it all at once, but I could start working on it, if allowed.

Very well. I'll release your suspension. When in doubt, you can ask for advice in the "Is this an example" thread in the Trope Talk forum.

Apparently I was suspended from edits, I'm not really sure why, I have a vague idea, maybe about my word replacing extensions I have, but I normally have them disabled while browsing TV Tropes, the last edit I made was just providing a further example of a Trope on the Terraria page, but other than that, I'm not too sure. Would like to get a response soon, thank you in advance

Yep, one of these word replacing extensions was vandalizing the wiki text.

You may not under any circumstances edit the wiki with one of these things running. Turn it off or remove it, please.

[up][up]There's also the thing that turns "space" into "spaaace".

I'm sure you understand that there's no way we can tolerate having people's browser plug-ins and such making changes to our articles every time they save an edit. We know you're not doing it in purpose but there you go.

Either install an exception for tvtropes.org in those plug-in/extensions or turn them off completely when you're on TV Tropes.

Since you've already promised to do this I'll release the suspension.
