Eh. Lilly and Hanako are the only ones who I have any interest in doing their routes. I did start Shizune's but it is so boring thus far I am surprised I have not upright deleted my progress in it yet.

I enjoyed Rin's route the least, it hit certain notes that made me very uncomfortable, but I wouldn't say it was what I was expecting from the first chapter.

I get what you mean. I would've felt that way, if it weren't for those Eight Deadly Words... But actually, those really only apply to Rin, as I felt that Hisao was more interesting in that route than on average.

I cared a lot about what happened to Rin, but that had a lot to do with her reminding me a lot of someone else from my life, and not in a good way.

I enjoyed Rin's route personally. I found some parts of it rather too...abstract for my tastes, but I liked Rin as a character. Then again I've always had a fondness for the crazy ones.

Well, yeah, it was Koakuma. Maybe I should visit threads I responded to more often.

I found Rin's route enjoyable, but it's hardly the best one. I'm not sure whether I like her more or less after doing that route, though. In a way, she is different than expected, but in another way she is exactly what she seemed to be in Act 1.

People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.

I agree that the first conversation you ever have with her is probably her at her most lucid...

It's one of the few times you get to see her not feeling horribly stressed-out.

I can see that tastes differ hugely here. I'll just dump mine:

Rin is my favourite. Her route wearied me in places, and the near-absence of the rest of the school and cast was a disappointment. But I could connect emotionally in a way I didn't with the rest. I was seriously terrified of getting the bad end (in part because the choices are so opaque). Maybe because I feel something like her too. She really convinced me as a believable person whose thinking looks crazy to everyone else but follows its own logic. And a very good turn-around of how endearing it seems in act 1.

Next, Emi. I could not connect with nearly as much, but it wasn't a problem as her route went by like a breeze. I read it far faster than the others. And she has the only sex scene that I found genuinely uncomfortable. If she didn't look so young...

Lilly and Hanako, I understood the point their routes are making, but I couldn't feel it. Nice reads, but nothing that touched me. Perhaps because my feeling with Hanako -from the moment I read the sketch by Raita- was that I wanted to help her become more independent.

Shizune: The story is good but I found it a chore to read through. I guess her slice-of-life route is just too subtle for me. Her relatives are colourful, but I did not find them believable.

I always went for the good endings and got all except Shizune. Yes, it was an obvious mistake... I just didn't believe it would lead to immediate sex.

If I can ask a question that came up earlier in the thread but didn't get much attention: how do you think this would be turned into an animated series (or any linear adaptation)? Without making it look like a harem series?

A series of what-if scenarios is the only really plausible thing that comes to mind.

CLANNAD worked because all the characters who got arcs had some big issue that needed to be solved with the help of the protagonist, but that wouldn't work with KS. In fact, acting like any of these girls need him would go completely against the point of at least two of these stories, and it would make any sense whatsoever for possibly maybe one of them.

I think a single storyline covering all the routes would work with a little tweaking if he got involved with most of the girls' problems as a friend, rather than a boyfriend. The canon girlfriend would be whoever's the hardest to adapt to a bro route. The fact that he's directly responsible for those problems getting worse in a coupla cases makes it look less like he's swooping in to save the day for everyone. Between art club, student council, and running, he'd certainly have a busy schedule, though.

I know nothing about the CLANNAD anime, so I can't comment on it.

Go the omnibus route that Amagami SS took.

Hanako's route doesn't need romance in it and I guess Shizune's doesn't either, though she'd still have to be in love with him. Lily and Emi's routes kind of require a relationship though, especially the latter. Which could probably not be adapted because hurray for otaku.

When the kind of otaku crap that happens I just put on my aviators and do my best MD Geist impersonation - deal with it.

You shouldn't worry about what otaku will gurgle about "lol healthy adolescent sex drive" and "lol lemon-flavored personal lubricant". I certainly won't.

Then the anime trolls everyone and makes it a Misha End

They would if they wanted to see which girl Hisao ended up with/if they did not get much Kenji after that.

Who cares about Hisao if I get to see two girls make out?^note Not actually my own opinion. I think Hisao is hotter than... some of the girls, though.
