Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

I would buy Curtain Call, but I don't think my touchscreen can handle another Theatrhythm game. Unless I can find a decent screen protector (read: not the ones they sell at Gamestop), I doubt I'll get it.

Well, I know this series quite well (at least FF VI - X). So I guess it's about time I answered the OP's question.

Which are your favorite games in the series and why? Final Fantasy VI and IX are my favorites.

VI was my "gateway" into the series. It was the first one I played and it was also the first RPG I'd played and beaten start to finish at the time. I played VI when I was only in middle school. At the time, I'd only seen negative sibling relationships, so seeing Edgar and Sabin actually display brotherly love was new and welcome. I came to replay this game for a Let's Play many years later (two years ago now, as a matter of fact.) I noticed and appreciated the storytelling, along with the development that each character went through.

IX was another favorite of mine because of its storytelling. I loved how not just the main characters, but the supporting ones all had an important role. I was fascinated with Lindblum and its airships too. I thought they were so neat! Beatrix was by far one of my favorite characters of all time. (When I first played the game, I gushed at the idea of a female swordsman, even if she was the enemy.) I loved how she started off doing evil things, but then reformed. It showed that antagonists don't have to be villains, and that there's a chance for redemption.

Just like VI, I played it a long time ago, and I did a recent replay. I came to appreciate more things about this game, while remembering what I loved about it in the first place.

I have throughly enjoyed V, VI and XII the most, but I have found something to like in every entry, even they're somewhat few and far-between in VIII and XIII.

I sure said that!

I played V too, now that you mention it. My favorite part about that one was the job system.

Aside from the excellent job system, though, the game has something that few other entries in the series have as much of: Charm. The game is self-aware and silly in many places but knows exactly when and how to be serious when it needs to be. Only in this game could a fight between a turtle and a tree happen.

I sure said that!

I still remember Galuf's death. It was heart breaking. Especially since Gameplay and Story Segregation was averted in the most painful way possible. Ugh, the feels.

I need to replay that game. Maybe I can find it on PSN or as a Nintendo DS cartridge. That way I wouldn't have to use a computer to play it.

The GBA version is currently the only one with a script that isn't terrible. Seriously, don't bother with the PSX version(s), including (sadly) the PSN version. The iOS version has the same script, but also looks like an amateur RPG Maker game, so draw your own conclusions there.

My favorites are IX, followed by VII. IX was the first I played, and its story and characters really left quite an impression on me. In fact, I'd put IX in my top 5 games of all time.

After that, I quite like X and XII, although I'm not sure how I'd rank them in comparison to each other. If we included spinoffs in this, Dissidia Duodecim would be up there with VII and IX. Not because of the story, which I find pretty bleh, but because of what I consider to be the best battle system of any action game I've ever played. It's just about one of the only games I can pick up anytime and have fun just playing random fights.

...I've never finished a mainline FF game. I'm partway through V and VI, VII is gathering virtua-dust, planning on getting the X remaster. I like what's been said about V, though, its charm and job system. VI is very well done, too. But my love is for the Tactics series — I'm playing WOTL for the first time, but A and A2 I know a fair deal better than the back of my hand.

VI, VII, and IX are my favorites. The original Tactics too if we're including spinoffs, which probably has the best story of anything with Final Fantasy in the name.

VI, VII, and X are my favorites. VI was my first, and was one of the games that drew me into the JRPG genre in the first place. I must have replayed the first half of that game dozens of times since I kept renting it and having to start over because some jerk erased my file. Some people, so selfish. VII was the reason I got a Playstation and basically dominated my life for about a year. And X, though not quite at the same level, was just a ton of fun to play. I feel like IX might have ranked higher for me if it hadn't been overshadowed by the PS 2. Really need to get back and play that one again.

Lets see: V is my favorite, XIII-2 my number 2 and VI/LR my tied number 3.

The HD Collection has really bumped X down a few ranks due to the extreme linearity and not having all party members receive EXP after battles.

This is my list of F Fs I played: 12=Tactics>6=9>DDFF>5>7>3(DS ver.)>TA 2>4TAY>4>8=13. Everything up to III I consider good, TA 2 and 4TAY are fun, but average, and 4, 8 and 13 I consider a waste of time.

FFVIII really doesn't know how to use its soundtrack. I can think of a few examples but none are so egregious as the FH concert where you get the BETTER conversation by having them play the folk music and NOT Eyes On Me. If you do play the sweet, romantic ballad, Rinoa ends up running away and the whole thing is a disaster. if you play the jig, Squall and Rinoa have a happy, heartfelt conversation about how they are going to live in the moment and everyone loves him.

Only that mood they were going for is murdered and buried by the music.

Oh and my favorite F Fs are XII and X. VII sometimes is up there depending on my mood. None of the others comes close to those three though. (in terms of overall favorites)

My absolute favorite FF is VII. I would rank VI and X rather high for story, and X-2 and XII high for gameplay. I like III, IV and VIII are alright, and I and II aren't really that good.

I haven't gotten to playing V, IX, or XIII yet.

My favourites are XII: IZJS and X. If any of you have a very good computer, play XII on PCSX 2 with 1080p and you'll love how beautiful it becomes. There's no fixing the sausage fingers, though.

RE: Crazy Chocobo in Theatrhythm. And the Ruined FOREVER brigade are coming in three, two, one...

On topic, my order from favourite to least favourite is IX, Dissidia 012, XII, X, XIII-2, VII, XIII, Revenant Wings, Dissidia, Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, III, X-2.

I like everything up to Dirge of Cerberus, though Dirge of Cerberus owes a lot of that to being fantastic riffing material and having the Final Fantasy equivalent of Foxhound as antagonists. Having Crisis Core so low on the list may be controversial, but Genesis and his silly clone plot single-handedly ruined that game for me. I dealt with it for a while, but around the time Genesis told one of his minions to eat Zack's hair, the fun gameplay stopped being enough to save the game. Then came the revelation that Genesis is doing his thing to find out how his crappy emo poetry finishes for the sake of a long overdue book report... A shame, as Crisis Core got off to such a good start. It's infinitely better when the focus in on Zack and his relationship with the cast and events of VII - in other words, anything that doesn't involve Genesis.

RE: Crazy Chocobo in Theatrhythm. And the Ruined FOREVER brigade are coming in three, two, one...

Funny, my immediate reaction was "OMG YES" followed by "goddammit, it's DLC and not in the main game," because I think Crazy Chocobo is absolutely hilarious. :P

Anyway, to join in the favorite FF games discussion, my top two are X and IX. Third favorite is probably V.

I think it's funny too, I was just addressing the controversy surrounding it. The DLC link did say Crazy Chocobo would be free for a bit in Japan. Do you think that will carry over to here once the English version is released?
