Eh. I like the suggestion, but I'm gonna go with current on this one, as the page is covering the series as a whole and not just the first game, so current works better as a general image (not like we don't have similar images and there isn't a precedent, as the Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog and Kirby pages all feature character artwork as the image).

Besides, Bonk is depicted with his more iconic, current design on the current, while OP features an early design of him that isn't used afterwards, so it doesn't reflect the series well.

Counter-argument: those are Franchise/ pages for the works in general across multiple media. This is a VideoGame/ page that's troping every game at once and doesn't have any specific subpages.

Until someone creates pages for the specific games, I think we should use a cover.

Honestly, that box art sucks ass and doesn't even use the proper design for the character.

I suggest either this ad for the arcade game (maybe with someone editing out the text under the logo),

Or this image of the art used for the Japanese version of Super Bonk.
