What stuff do you watch subbed or dubbed and why?

I am a major fan of dubs so I mostly watch stuff dubbed but there is also stuff I mostly watch subbed.

Toy Story I watch dubbed because its muh Nostalgia. I watch One Piece subbed despite loving the redub because the dub is on Netflix and I rarely get to use it.

I pretty much only watch dubs not because I don't like subs, but because I have such a short attention span that I need dubs so I can look away from the screen if I have to.

I have no strong preference either way, but I prefer dubs for more visually-stimulating works. If the action happening on screen is insane or beautifully animated, I'd rather focus on my attention on that rather than have it divided by the subtitles on the lower third.

I'm pretty much the same as WarJay. Plus, the delivery of lines in a language I don't understand is almost always lost on me.

I tend to watch subs, if only because they actually help me absorb the story better. If I just do dubs, I am tempted to just have the show on in the background, which is not something I wish to do.

I prefer dubs unless the voice acting for them isn't good.

I usually watch dubs, but if there are enough changes from the original, I will stick with the sub version. That's at least what I'm doing with Pokémon as of now.

If it's a new show with no dub then I'll usually watch it subbed rather than wait for the dub. After a dub comes out I'll check it out and if it's decent enough I'll stick with that.

but dubs are fine and i usually watch those if they're better in some way.

For example, more witty dialogue.

The Yu Yu Hakusho Dub is way better cause like 65% of the characters have sharper tongues and some of their comebacks are glorious.

For Example, the DBZ Dub is marginally better than subbed, despite some of the controversies that the VAs get into. Although I prefer Masako Nozawa's take on Son Goku, I have to admit that when I think of Goku's VA I usually think of Sean Schemmel. Not to forget Christopher Sabat's glorious portrayal of Vegeta, making him sound way more arrogant, which really fit his character, and his good Voice Acting making a lot more of the scenes really hit better.

Though I also watch subs due to copyright issues, a big example being the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Anime and how certain Stand Names and Character Names were changed due to specific copyrights, most of the changes being... ...not so good (My favorite stands Crazy Diamond and Sticky Fingers got changed to Shining Diamond and Zipper Man) and although the Voice Actors do a good job, certain bits can really cause it to fall off.

I came of age when dubs were muuuuch worse than they are now and thus watch everything subbed if I can help it. Most dubs have an additional layer of artificiality that takes me out, especially if it's a live action work.

As much as dub VAs deserve better pay, I prefer to watch/play things in their original language whenever possible. It’s partly because of authenticity, and partly because making a sub of an anime is no harder than making a translation of a manga.

I generally watch dubs unless the only dub available is terrible or there is no dub, or (as is the case with Hunter × Hunter) someone makes a very good argument for watching it subbed.

It depends on whether I can speak the language of the source materials. For works in English, I choose subs, and if possible, I turn off subtitles as well. For works in Japanese, for example, anime, I don't mind either way. I think of dubs as a derivative work, so for some shows, such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica or Neon Genesis Evangelion I actually watched the sub first and rewatched the dub.

I'm usually a dub guy, unless the English dub is notably worse than the original, or if no dub is available.

I'm both.

Generally in theaters, I watch anime films dubbed, although I do wish to see more subbed versions, but where I am, they interfere with other plans on certain days.

Sometimes when I liked the subbed version more, I like the music dubbed. For example, I do prefer the voices in Belle (2021) subbed, but the music was better dubbed.

When anime films are released on video or streaming, I watch both.

As for anime series, I generally watch anime dubbed. If dub's not the option, then subbed. If I think the dub is trash, then subbed.

I generally prefer watching stuff subbed, with dialogue in the original language.

For anime in particular I usually go for subs, except for works with a funny Gag Dub or a So Bad, It's Good work where the dub just makes the experience even "better" (like Garzey's Wing). For Japanese games, it depends but I sometimes play with dubs so I can catch everything - for example I started playing Neptunia with dubs so I could understand all the unsubbed battle quotes, and ended up liking it

I will basically always choose the English dub when available unless it's really, really bad. (I've never actually watched anything where that was the case, for whatever that's worth.)

I will always pick the dubbed version, as I don't speak Japanese. That being said if a program has subtitles available I will use them.

I like both, though I usually watch dubs just because their voice casts have names I more easily recognize, and I find it fun to see how the same voice actor/actress will perform as different kinds of characters.

I usually avoid gag dubs. I’m also not a fan of “dub-titles”.

I prefer English audio, makes scenes stick. Granted, dubbing doesn’t pay so they can get away with poor performances.

I give older 90's era dubs a pass on quality. Mediocre dubs is kinda part of the charm along with the dated animation.

Off the top of my head the one series I can think of that I just flat out prefer subs over dubs to is CLANNAD. The English actors were horribly miscast.

Video games are very guilty of it. I don't know who's playing without sound or without balanced audio.

I often watch dubs instead of subs, but if there's an exception, it's usually cause it's technically a different show(like Power Rangers and Super Sentai).
