Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.
This thread is for discussing the following topics:
- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

while making a new page, how long does it take for the WikiWord to be approved for display?
Edited by SpongeBobFan2004 on Feb 17th 2024 at 11:57:41 AM
Generally not more than a day, but it depends how many mods are online and how many requests are in the queue.
There have been days where it's reached 50+ (e.g. when we've had recap pages for whole seasons of shows submitted), and we do need to do a couple of checks before approving or declining.
If there's a problem, we'll normally post in the custom title thread and ping the relevant troper to alert them.
Edit: For what it's worth, there are 38 there at the moment.

I’ve just created a forum thread about Lyric Interpretations only to realise AFTER I posted it that the purpose of my thread is already served by the Wild Mass Guessing / Music page of this Wiki. Nobody else has contributed to it yet; is it possible to remove my Lyric Interpretations thread, since the WMG/Music page makes it a bit redundant?! Thanks!
I've locked the thread. We could nuke it entirely, but we tend to save that for cases where the content is problematic, not just duplicates.
For future reference, you can holler that sort of request to contact the mods directly - it doesn't normally need a post here.
Is adding spoiler tags to Moments and Headscratchers subpages a suspendable offense?
I'm lovin' it. (My Troper Wall)Not immediately, but it'll earn notifiers. Enough notifiers can lead to a suspension.
Likewise, if we know a troper has received notifiers and been told not to add the tags, but carries on, that might get a suspension. Ignoring feedback and consensus is often a bigger issue than misunderstanding rules.
The concise version.

We now have a new Administrivia policy page for handling translated works:
Troping Works Created in Other Languages
At the moment this only covers works with official English translations, but we'll be expanding it as policy decisions on other scenarios are made.
If you have an interest in these discussions, the policy decisions will be via the Translation Policy thread on Wiki Talk and final wording for any additions or changes will get consensus via the Outdated Administrivia thread before any updates are made.
I honestly don't think I've seen a single instance of the word "Damn" throughout my entire time on the forums. Is it a forbidden word or something?
I'm lovin' it. (My Troper Wall)Uh ... no? There are lots of instances of it being used.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanLack of something doesn't mean it's forbidden, and everyone doing something doesn't mean it's allowed.
Swearing on forums isn't forbidden, but I assume gratious amount would get a direct reply to tone down.

TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup> I honestly don't think I've seen a single instance of the word "Damn" throughout my entire time on the forums. Is it a forbidden word or something?
weird,I've used it plenty of times
New theme music also a boxWe don't have a swearing filter or anything, though excessive use will probably get you told off by other tropers and/or staff. But generally speaking people around here aren't that sweary anyway.
Optimism is a duty.Yeah, we have no direct rule against swearing on the forums. Most posters exercise decorum and taste, since that's the culture we've tried to foster. But a cuss every now and then is damned satisfying.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"So I did message one of the mod team about this a while ago but I never got a responce.
With the US Politics thread now locked what are the rules on discussing US political issues in other threads? Specifically legal/criminal issues/events in threads on such things. As we’ve discussed US police in the OTC Law Enforcement Thread and US court rulings/Trump legal judgments in the Legal Eagle thread (normally after a video on said subject but now preemptively due to a video being expected).
So are we good there or do people need to back off? I’m especially nervous about such discussions starting to leak out from the semi-controlled environment of OTC.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThe discussions on Legal Eagle all seem to be civil and not disruptive, at least.
I suspect that not having the pressure cooker of the US Politics thread helps a lot. People seem a lot calmer without one thread that contains any number of topics related to US Politics in general.
Edited by Redmess on Mar 5th 2024 at 10:36:08 AM
Optimism is a duty.Perhaps it is because those threads only discuss a specific aspect of US politics, i.e. the particular case mentioned in Legal Eagle's recent video, or the US political issue of police reform, etc. If we were to ban discussion of US Politics at all, a lot of threads will not be allowed to discuss anything US related (because everything is political!), and even some threads about other countries, like the War in Ukraine thread, will be affected (because of the US' outsized influence on global issues).
"Enshittification truly is how platforms die"-Cory DoctorowThe Legal Eagle thread did concern me because it appears to have difficulties keeping itself relevant to the channel. Because the youtuber discusses politics, every time Trump is brought up, there appears a page of posts discussing Trump personally in matters that have nothing to do with the videos.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupIt is on-topic though, since Devin is following all of Trump's court cases, especially those concerning his re-election campaign.
That is still tangentially related to his legal troubles, though. But I agree that was starting to veer off-topic. The thread did self-correct though, which is a good sign.
Edited by Redmess on Mar 6th 2024 at 10:28:01 AM
Optimism is a duty.I refer to a discussion about Trump taking refuge in another country and his business connections aboard, that aren't related to Trump's election, trials, or anything Devin has brought up so far.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupThis is the bit that concerns me about the Legal Eagle thread too. Discussion in the Legal Eagle thread should be based on the actual vids' content, not what we think will be content in a future vid.
Disgusted, but not surprisedBut Devin has been talking about this case already, so talking about the result seems logical enough.
So the basic question is then: can we talk about the result of a discussed court case when that result was not around at the time that video came out? We do allow discussing updates on old videos otherwise, after all, when there is new information relevant to that old video.
Optimism is a duty.Talking about the result of a court case itself sounds a little different to talking about Trump — hypothetically — fleeing the country to avoid consequences.
If that's not a possibility that's been mentioned in the web show, then it feels like an off-topic tangent to me.
I'd argue that discussing the possible consequences of the ruling for Trump would become out of topic easily for the Legal Eagle videos.
Inter arma enim silent leges
I see no reason to regulate Trope Talk unless there's a clear problem (though TV Tropes Forum could be mroe detailed). If people have issues with a specific trope, they are free to express them and others can weight in. If people disagree, discussion dies, otherwise it can prompt TRS. If people post wrong stuff there, then it needs more perma-locked pinned threads or a centralized FAQ thread.
