New Work Page Workshop Thread

Go To

Please go through these pages first before posting here:

Now that you've read all that, welcome! Making pages for your favorite works and creators is fun, but we get that there's a learning curve, especially for new tropers. This thread is intended to help people new to work-page making, and can cover anything and everything you aren't sure about after reading the relevant Administrivias: whether or not an example passes wiki standards, if the formatting and layout of your page is all right, if the summary is comprehensible, or if the page has enough meat to stand by itself. Or simply if you need a second pair of eyes to take a look at your work.

Things that this thread is not:

  • A place to request work pages to be made - This Is a Wiki; if you are familiar with the work, then you are the best person to make the page. This thread is intended to be a peer review of work pages that are in progress or newly finished. If you feel like a work deserves a page but can't go about making it yourself for whatever reason, please list it in List of Shows That Need Summary.
  • For help with trope-making: see the Trope Idea Sounding Board (for incipient ideas) and the TLP workstation thread (for existing drafts) for help on that.
  • For image selection: you can generally go and put up an image of the work by yourself (go through How to Pick a Good Image first, though), but if you have two or more suggestions, pop by Image Pickin instead.

Now - post your babies (sandboxes, new pages, TLP drafts, etc).! We are here to help. :-)

Hooray, this'll be very handy.

Can we mention the Sounding Board in the OP, so people know where to take Trope Draft ideas?

^Done. I also added a statement about This Is a Wiki in case anyone comes knocking around asking to make pages for specific things.

Now, how to advertise this...

Good idea for a thread! Not sure how to get it advertised though.

Should the OP mention List of Shows That Need Summary as place to direct people who want a page to be made but want someone else to do it either because they don't know how or can't for whatever reason?

[up]Great idea, it's in there now.

My advertisement plan so far is to post it whenever someone asks for help in ATT or TLP. Would linking this in the Administrivia/ pages be too much?

I'm going to need help with #Black AF. Has anyone watched the series before?

I haven't. You could use a sandbox to draft a page for it: Sandbox.Black AF

Sakuya Izayoi Gives You Advice And Dabs may be a very short work, but I know there's more than four tropes in it.

Black AF: [up][up]OP has a TLP draft for it, but TLP isn't always the best place for it — tropers over there tend not be very responsible to potential work pages, in my experience.

Some comments on the draft:

  • I don't know if the examples currently on there were like that before or after the ZCE comments. Some of them still need more context. It's not enough to say a character thinks of themselves as a trope — show examples about why they're a Dysfunctional Family, or explain how he specifically thinks of himself as an Only Sane Man.
  • In the first sentence, you shouldn't link to the very page you're making.
  • I think the summary is fine smile. If you fix up the context issues, then I think this page can be made.

Sakuya Izayoi Gives You Advice And Dabs:
  • Going ahead and fixing the formatting (properly linking to Steam, hardline before examples).
  • Maybe add a line or two about the premise of the game to the description? That would help in terms of thinking up tropes for it.

Last Cloudia has literally zero description. Unfortunately, I know nothing about it, so I can't help with that.

~Master Joseph is the page's only editor so far.

The description doesn't just have to contain the summary. You can also put: (1) what it is (a video game? specifically a mobile RPG?) (2) when it was released (3) who created it (4) and what platform it was released on.

Right. My usual work-description template is:

  • The name of the work, the creator, the publishing year, and maybe where it was published
  • A non-spoiler description of the work in at least 1 paragraph, more if necessary
  • If an online work, a link to the work.

It sort sort of has a description now but that blurb from the website doesn't sound it would be hard to summarize with original wording and use that as the description. Either way, it doesn't work as a quote and is too long.

So a page for the Cartoon Network pilot Trick Moon was created yesterday and it is in very bad shape out the gate. Most examples are a sentence each and do a subpar job of explaining, there actually is one straight up ZCE, and the description is plagiarized from an official blurb, very obviously when compared to the examples. It's also technically in the wrong namespace, as it was released online first and thus falls under Web Animation.

I can rewrite some examples later since I watched it a few days ago and I can probably paraphrase the blurb into something usable, but I'm not sure what to do about the whole namespace thing.

[up] I’d say that the page’s contents should be moved in to a sandbox and the page be cut for now, with the page being recreated in the correct namespace once you clean up the examples.

I'd rather turn the old page into a redirect. Seems simpler and would probably stop someone from trying to recreate it if they didn't notice the existing page — or they did notice it and incorrectly move it back to the Western Animation namespace.

Would this thread also be for new pages that have a good amount of tropes and such but could use a boost to help collect more examples? Or is this just for pages that don't meet the minimum requirements?

Cuz I just made Bad Kitty with a good amount of tropes (granted some are character tropes but IDK if it needs a character page yet) but since I largely wrote it from either memory or googling and still need to revisit the books (and haven't read some recent books since I outgrew the series), I know there's more to be added and wanna encourage people familiar with the series to help out, especially those who kept up with later books.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

[up]The latter, and for helping meet the minimum requirements in general. I don't really want this to be a thread asking for wiki magic.
