Minor spoilers for My Hero Academia ahead

”Next...Next, it’s your turn.”
The day that All Might, No. 1 Hero of Japan, sacrificed the last of his strength in a monumental fight against his arch rival, everyone was abuzz. While Japan was the most affected by the loss of its faithful protector and the last words he spoke as a hero, the rest of the world felt the change too; heroes became on edge and protective of their reputations, villainous organizations were riled up and began making bolder moves, and citizens grew wary over their peaceful lives. All Might’s retirement was the end of an era in more places than one.
But not everything was worse off. In the aftermath of this last stand, this triumph over evil, people were inspired. Even those that had no intention to be heroes found themselves drawn to the prospect. As many cities shifted from their relative peace to a much shakier climate, the next generation of heroes rose up to face whatever challenges arose.
So, are you ready to play the hero?

Welcome, students, to Altelié Academy!note  Set in the world of MyHeroAcademia, Alt Academia: To Be a Hero will feature your characters as the newest student body of Alt Academy, one of the most prominent schools of its kind in America. But if you don’t know the show, don’t worry, this roleplay will have very little to do with it! Outside of the overall setting and a few story beats, this roleplay will not involve any of the anime/manga’s plot or characters. Only original ones, your own included!

This RP will go over your characters during their time at Alt Academy, learning to be heroes, making friends (or enemies), and definitely not getting into trouble. While there will be a handful of plotlines - some more important than others - what your characters do is up to you. The academy, its faculty and students, are yours to do whatever you wish with… so long as you remember that you’re there to be heroes. And like regular schools, your characters will have time outside of class to do whatever they want! The focus will be on the academy of course, but teens don’t just hang around one place, right?

What I’m trying and probably failing to say is that this RP will be like a Sandbox Lite. You can shape the city it takes place in with your characters’ backstories, and do however you like in the roleplay proper barring some internal limitations, but there will be a handful of happenings that’ll, uh, happen. You get it!

First, the rules:

  • Forum Rules and Roleplay Rules apply, as always.
  • You should be respectful and kind outside of the roleplay, of course. Insults, put-downs, or any other kind of shitty behavior won’t be tolerated, if it’s consistent that is. I get people have bad days! Just be an overall nice, cool person.
  • None of that forum BS such as auto-hitting, ghosting, etc. You’re playing semi-trained teenagers at best, so keep that sense of inexperience in mind!note
  • The setting is a fairly absurd world full of crazy personalities, but is still very much similar to the real world, with a lot of heavy moments and motivations. As such, try to have your character fit the tone; they can be more silly or more serious than normal, but don’t have them be utterly ridiculous or overly dramatic. And, y’know, they’re supposed to be heroes so don’t make them insane or murderous or nothin’.
  • Have fun! This is mandatory, and any no-fun-having will be squashed.

And now, for some important information!

The City of Los Niras & Altelié Academy
Los Niras, situated right in the middle of Central California, is an up-and-coming metropolis. Having once been little more than a pitstop town along a major highway, Los Niras got itself on the map with the introduction of Atelié Academy. Almost overnight, Los Niras became a hotspot of activity. Corporations and realtors bought up empty lots and buildings, quick to make Los Niras an inviting and lucrative place to live. Now, most of the city is being built upon and its population growing every day. Los Niras has a shining future ahead of itself!...if the criminal element can be kept at bay.

With progress comes those wanting to abuse it, and Los Niras was no exception. Thugs and gangs pick away at the half-formed city to scratch out a living while bigger threats lurk in the shadows of unfinished skyscrapers. But don’t worry, where there are villains, there are heroes! Heroes who will make sure justice is served and the populace is protected. Especially so close to Alt Academy, right?

Altelié Academy was a prestigious school for those wanting to become heroes. Originally founded by Arthur Altelié around when the third generation of Quirk users were born, the Academy produced a great many Pro Heroes, and gained an incredible reputation. But at one point during its time, it was just closed down. No word of why, no meeting afterwards, Alt Academy simply closed its doors and stopped accepting students. The Altelié still worked as Pro Heroes, yet none of them knew why the Academy closed. At the behest of the family’s newest children, however, Alt Academy was opened once more, in Los Niras, and isn’t planning to shut down anytime soon.

    Quirks: A Primer
Now, for those not familiar with My Hero Academia material, or anyone who needs a refresher, I’ll go over the basics of what Quirks are!

Quirks are essentially a form of biological, highly individualized powers. Quirks manifest in children 4 years old at the most, and they are passed down genetically - a person could have either one of their parents’ Quirks, a completely new Quirk derived from the Quirks of both parents, or in extremely rare cases, a Quirk that is unlike any in their family line. At the point this RP takes place in (there’s no set timeframe for the MHA but it’s safe to assume it’s at least close to 2100), 80% of the world’s population has a Quirk. It’s a normality to life now, and not everyone who has a Quirk ends up being a hero.

There are 3 different classes of Quirks:

  • Emitter Quirks are the most common form. These kinds of Quirks are ones that produce or make something, applies change to an object, or affects other people. Think laser beams, elemental control, telepathy, making bubbles, etc. Anything that needs a conscious activation and has an effect outside of the user is an Emitter Quirk.
  • Mutant Quirks are Quirks that change a person’s innate abilities. Wings, horns, engines, guns, tape dispensers, Mutant Quirks are permanent additions or effects on the Quirk’s user. They don’t need to be activated because they can’t be, it’s just how that person is. Oh, and something to note is that many people are born with a mutation, but also exhibit a totally separate Quirk. It’s not that they have two Quirks, it’s more that their looks are derived from one of their parents having a Mutant Quirk, without that being their Quirk.
  • Transformation Quirks, also known as Hybrid Quirks, are a sort of composite of the other two kinds. They’re Quirks that affect the user directly, like Mutant Quirks, but need to be explicitly activated, like an Emitter Quirk. Changing your body in one way or another, or even specific parts of it. Transformation Quirks tend to be a bit uncommon compared to the other two types, too.

I highly recommend you read the list of Quirks here if you aren’t familiar with them, to get a good idea of what sorts of forms they take, and what’s already been done! Oh, spoilers ahead if you do so, of course, heheh.

Ah, boy, that’s a whole lotta text. Sorry everyone, I just got a lot to say! But, lucky for you, that’s the end of my infodump. Onto the fun part for you: characters!

Character Sheet

  • Name: Your character’s name, of course. Keep it simple, just their birth name and any nickname they go by.
    • Hero Name: What your character will be called once they become a hero. It’ll be officially chosen later, so your character can start out not knowing what they want it to be, but it’s fun and helpful to know ahead of time! (The structure of a Hero Name should be ‘X Hero, Y’, ie Lightning Rod Hero, Zip Zap)
  • Age: Alt Academy accepts students within the first two years of their highschool education, around 14 to 16 years old. Can be older or younger if you want, just don't go too far into adult or kid territory.
  • Personality: How your character tends to act, how they think, how they would interact with people and the world.
  • Quirk: The big thing, your character’s Quirk, their special power. Put the name here (a simple one or two word descriptor, like “Vivisection”, “Huge Eye”, “Air Shot”), as well as its type (Emitter, Mutant, or Transformation)
    • Effect: What the Quirk can do, of course! Quirks run heavily on One Person, One Power and as such what your Quirk does should be at least somewhat specific and unique. Of course, just like any other physical trait, Quirks are able to be extremely similar without being the same thing (a Quirk that turns water into ice is different from a Quirk that simply creates ice, for example).
    • Drawbacks: Most Quirks have side-effects that hamper its user, especially if they’re untrained in using them. Does the Quirk only work or works worse in certain environments? Is there a cap, time limit or expendable resource, that prevents it from being used too much? Does it hurt or hamper your character if it’s overused? You can forgo any drawbacks if you want, but I’ll only allow it if the Quirk is highly specific or not too inherently powerful.
  • Appearance: What your character looks like, and possibly what they usually wear. Pictures or words, however you want it!
    • Costume: Alt Academy allows students to submit their own costume designs and specifics when they’re accepted to be tailor made for them. They can be as flashy or as plain as you like, befitting your character's function or aesthetic. Note, costumes are pretty important for Pro Heroes, typically designed to enhance their Quirk / limit its drawbacks, as well as supplying special things their Quirk calls for. It isn’t always just colorful spandex!
  • Abilities/Skills: Anything your character is able to do outside of their Quirk. Fighting skills, sneakery, tinkering, etc. You are high-schoolers, don’t forget, so you won’t be acting like super soldiers or anything like that.
    • Equipment: Along with your costume, Alt Academy also provides students with any special equipment they include with their costume. Things that can help your Quirk activate, make it work easier or better, or anything of that sort. Or maybe there's something you need for your Quirk to be used at all!
  • Backstory: Tell us how your character’s life was like leading up to them getting accepted into the academy, as well as why they did so. Despite what the opening above says, your character can have joined the academy for any reason. Maybe they want fame and fortune? Or they got in through special recommendation? Feel free to world-build a bit if you like, adding to the mythos of Los Niras if it suits your character!
  • Tidbit: Give us a bit of flavor about your character. A single sentence that provides insight into them, their life, or just some fun trivia to help flesh them out!

Accepted Characters

With THAT all done and said, please know you can ask any questions you have! And I hope you have fun and stay cool~

  • Name: Lucy Melanie Livingston
    • Hero Name: Espionage Hero, Inkwell
  • Age: 16
  • Personality: A shy, quiet, and introverted girl, Lucy barely seems to be able to raise her voice to a level higher than a whisper most times due to her conviction that her opinion is somehow invalid unless asked for or completely necessary. She lacks confidence in herself and regularly shies away from confrontation, however she manages to keep her kinder and more concerned side extraverted regardless of how self-conscious she's feeling at that given moment. Lucy possesses an intense dislike for any type of wrongdoing or unfair treatment, and (despite her aforementioned timidity) regularly finds herself intruding on behalf of the innocent to the point where it has become a concern for her own health. Lucy seems to be selfless to the point where she lets herself suffer, afraid of doing things she actually enjoys doing in public out of fear of coming across callous or selfish. Internally, however, these exact feelings and emotions are welling up inside her—festering and growing the more they are kept bottled up and ironically causing Lucy to slip into a state of extreme stubbornness and even ruthlessness while under stress. This darker side of hers is something she is intensely ashamed of and keeps heavily under wraps, but her emotional instability means that she can end up flipping between cautious kindness and unshakeable determination in an instant. Lucy has her faults and insecurities, but ultimately she wants to become someone forgiving and patient towards others—an empathetic counselor; even if her true self is far from it.
  • Quirk: Melanokinesis (Emitter)
    • Effect: By converting her body's excess fat and mucus supplies, Lucy can internally produce a gelatinous substance that both resembles and smells of printer ink. While inside her body this is mostly useless, Lucy can also push it out through the pores of her skin in order to manipulate it outside of herself—possessing a mental connection with the substance that enables her to mould it according to her thoughts (and obvious physical limitations). This allows her to form basic constructs such as whips, tendrils, thin barriers (by stretching it into a translucent membrane), or even pack it tightly over her hands and feet to increase her physical capabilities—usually in the form of rudimentary knuckledusters or leg braces to cushion her falls. Lucy also has control over how intense the ink leaves her body—able to either slowly leak it out as a liquid or shoot it towards her targets in the form of high-speed pellets. To assist in her more stealthy approach to situations, Lucy's ink can also muffle her footsteps as well as assist in hiding her already dark form—that when combined with her oversized cloak can end up enhancing the shapelessness of her outline with the added benefit of scaring the proverbial s*** out of her enemies.
    • Downsides: Since Lucy's ink generation directly ties into her body's mass, overuse of her ink production and conversion of body fats and fluids can end up severely dehydrating her or even starving her to the point of intense fatigue and weakness—in other words, the more she uses her Quirk, the closer she gets to passing out from exhaustion. Lucy's ink is also vulnerable to extreme heat changes or environmental effects: excess heat can begin to evaporate it or warp it beyond her control or freeze it in such a way that she cannot manipulate it at all.
  • Appearance: 5'3". A little gaunt and sickly in the body, probably due to lingering effects from her Quirk's regular usage. Moves slowly and delicately; keeps herself tightly enclosed in her clothing if she can help it. Habit of hiding her face and staring at her feet. Most often wears baggy hoodies and form-hiding clothing, but on days she feels more confident she may remove the former in favour of a simple black tee. Her clothing is usually a pitch black in colouration with a slight sheen under certain lights—this is due to her practice of storing ink in the fabric of her garments; ready to use at a moment's notice. Blushes furiously whenever she receives any kind of positive attention, and has a notably effective death glare.
    • Costume: A dark purple kevlar bodysuit in two pieces, designed to be protective over manoeuvrable and (much to Lucy's relief) tends to hide the wearer's form due to the extent of the padding. It is sufficiently bulletproof against small arms and also protects against blades, however this is mostly to give Lucy time to get away more than supply consistent defense. The suit also comes with black gloves and boots, along with a long cloak and hood—which can also be wrapped around her form in such a way so that she resembles some kind of dark wraith. Features a black peace symbol emblazoned on the chest piece; a subtle detail that can barely be seen against the dark purple of the torso piece.
  • Abilities/Skills: Lucy is naturally athletic and flexible due to prior experience in dancing and gymnastics, but with the heaviness of her suit this mostly manifests in the form of greater awareness of her body and increased balance (along with a good reaction time). She's an excellent tactician if she's given the opportunity and environment to work out a plan, however her tendency to panic under stress and her inability to improvise complex ideas means she usually leaves this to the more capable of her comrades. Her naturally quiet nature also means she is especially attuned to espionage and stealth—which is all well and good, as she lacks the body weight and training to be able to fight for long even with heavy assistance from her ink.
    • Equipment: Lucy's suit incorporates an inbuilt utility belt lined with supplies of emergency ink cartridges; useful in a pinch when she's too exhausted to generate it herself (though the amount of mass she gets from it is obviously pitiful in comparison). Her cloak is also insulated to protect against the cold (lessening the freezing effect on her ink), and the bodysuit itself is fitted with internal braces and scaled in such a way that it supports her stance for when she's feeling tired, enabling her to stand up even on the verge of unconsciousness (although the added weight makes it notoriously difficult for her to get back up). Lucy's suit also contains a few pouches containing energy bars and other such rations for when the situation becomes severe.
  • Backstory: Lucy (along with her older sister Hannah and younger brother David) was born to two Quirk users of the Livingston lineage; a relatively old family with a history of producing particularly unstable figures and a much more recent history of producing particularly unstable empowered figures ever since the first Quirk was manifested. Inheriting her mother's ability to generate and control ink, the initially shy and reclusive Lucy soon gained an intense urge to help others after suffering through her own bullying at school and witnessing a particular crisis report on the television. After undergoing basic training with her combined Quirk under her parents' and siblings' watchful eyes, Lucy began the journey to attending Alt Academy; regularly practicing the process of generating ink as well as refining her physical capabilities in order to make sure the previously fragile girl would even be able to survive in such an environment. With her determination outweighing her nervousness, however, Lucy is unwavering in her resolve and strive to help others even if she doesn't manage to get in, and it's unlikely that she'll stop trying until she secures her position of at least an up-and-coming hero.
  • Tidbit: In her free time, Lucy is an avid painter as well as being musically inclined, skilled with the bass of all things along with possessing a fairly decent singing voice as well (albeit a quiet one). She also has a tendency of being a bit of a neat freak, though thankfully she doesn't make much comment about other people's messiness unless it's somehow to a level offensive.

There's nothing glaringly wrong with this that I can see, though there are some small things. For one, I feel like her Quirk has too many drawbacks. I would recommend taking out the fact that it hurts to produce and that it's taxing to manipulate, because really the fact that overuse can lead to exhaustion and passing out is already enough, and those two just make it seem downright unviable to even use her Quirk.

And it could just be me not understanding right, but I don't see how she's geared towards "espionage" as you've said it, her costume is too bulky to be of much stealthiness and her ink Quirk seems to be more physical in nature than anything spy-like. Or is it more due to how dark she is?

Edited. I didn't really think about the thing with the suit's bulkiness, but I suppose the idea was that the suit was dark enough to hide her. That and the ink constructs could assist her in moving silently. Forgot I was limiting her down from that point, though. That stuff was for when she was pretty advanced with her level of control.

Also removed the other weaknesses, barring the heat thing because I feel like she needs at least that for an active disadvantage against someone. Guess I was feeling overzealous.

So barring that, if she's not an espionage type what should her epithet be? There's not too many synonyms for ink :P

  • Name: Markus Phidias
  • Age: 17
  • Hero Name: Sagittarius, the Cavalry Hero
  • Personality: Markus is a humble downhome boy from out east, a Mojave rancher through and through. He's often suspicious of these Californian cityfolk, and really thinks a lot of people don't respect ordinary skills or folks anymore. His humility doesn't extend to his ability to take insults however, and he refuses to let himself or anyone he cares about take an insult lying down—if you don't challenge it, you make it true.
  • Quirk: Centaur
  • Effect: Mark has the bottom half of a big powerful warhorse. It's a Mutant Quirk so that really is all there is to it. Horse kicks and stomps have been estimated to be within a few thousand PSI, and a headshot will kill a normal human, no question, so watch out! Can also sleep standing up!
  • Downsides: Have you seen a horse? Only humans have worse skeletons. His ankles are an absurdly fragile weak point, his hooves need regular shoeing, he takes a truly absurd amount of food to keep going, and his enormous body mass makes a fall dangerous for himself and others around him. Don't ask how his back connects with the horse, it's bad.
  • Appearance: Let's just get out of the way at the top that Mark wears pants like the top right of this image. He has mid-toned dark skin, strong cheekbones, and curly black hair, with a top half that is toned but not bulked. His horse half is a dark brown sumter, basically the midsize sedan of horses, and when not slumped or sitting he stands around 8'4.
    • Costume: Markus wears a cowboy getup as Sagittarius. Up top he wears a leather jacket with a vest, a gunbelt, and a stetson and bandanna in his face. Down below he's a bit more practical, wearing modern horse armor colored black and detailed with those flowers and vines you see on old silk "cowboy shirts."
  • Abilities/Skills: Markus has had equestrian training with his rancher work since he was a kid. He is athletic for a horse, and can do all sorts of fancy tricks with a lasso, like catch a target or swing around on stuff. He also knows quite a bit about shooting and swords, though nothing in a real fight—he learned from historical recreation societies, not real Hero Schools.
  • Equipment: Mark's weapon of choice is a well-maintained lever-action Winchester cowboy repeater, as well as a lasso and a cavalry saber, all machined and retuned with modern materials. He also carries an electric brand with his old family's cattle brand on it: a phi, a D, and an S, with the phi and the D nestled in the curves of the S. He also has a special automated rig at the school to take off his armor and change his clothes.
  • Backstory: The Mohave tribes out in... the Mojave desert... are another example of one Quirk giving rise to another. In this case, one tribesman's Luck Quirk right at the start of the birth of Quirks caused a rapid spike of other Quirks to begin appearing in the region, powerful Quirks that were easy to use. The first nations people on the reservations in the area led a brief secessionist movement that was actually successfully deescalated, which in turn created a progressive culture that Markus grew up in, the son of Giorgio and Marsha Phidias, a Greek banker and Mojave ecologist, respectively, both with powerful Quirks. Growing up with his Quirk in the open desert was a blessing, but he really felt like he'd missed the fight that took place earlier to make it that way. The local ranchers became a second family to him, and he learned to walk with them, not his parents; the Mojave community was bigger than just one family. He decided to become Sagittarius to try to do something good for the world because he wanted to have earned the upbringing and justice he'd been born into. His parents were ready though—they let him go only on the condition that his Grandpa's old rifle and saber be there to protect him.
  • Tidbit: Claims his quirk also gives him "horse sense" because he refuses to believe he's just pretty decent at reading people.

@Enirboreh: Well, you can keep it as Espionage, still! It just might not've come across super well, either from how it's worded or how I took it to mean. Or you could have it be something that's ink-related that still insinuates her stealth potential, something Dark or Black related. Whichever way you go, Inkwell is Accepted.

@Taco: So long as both you and Markus are aware that he won't be able to use his actual, legitimate weapons during school, Centaur is Accepted. Though I am curious... How does a horse sit in a chair? tongue

Honestly I was figuring he'd use whatever rubber bullets or whatever Snipe used to shoot the students during the hero exam, and also bring a blanket or something to sit himself down or have one of those Standing Desks in the back of the room.

horse + chair = hair

Also, if it was a simple matter of phrasing I might be able to fix that, then. Maybe say she can silence her footsteps with ink or something. Or camoflauge herself into shadow with it. Either or. I'll work it in somehow.

[up][up][up] Hah, yeah, that's true, there's more than one kind of bullet in the world. I think Snipe was able to shoot at students because he was the one person that could never hit them, though. Regardless, it should be okay for Markus to have it still.

[up][up] That would work great, honestly. Don't have to change too much, just emphasize the sneakiness of her Quirk.

[up] Awesome, looking forward to your app~

  • Name: Carmilla Van Helsing
  • Age: 17
  • Hero Name: The Bloodcurdling Hero, Draculina
  • Personality: About as haughty as you'd expect someone roleplaying as a discount Dracula. While a lot of it is just being a slave to decorum, some of the haughtiness is distressingly genuine. Carmilla has huge shoes to first clean from the legacy of her family's progenitor and then fill as the next "vampire" hero. A secluded personage from a huge mansion that may come off as insensitive and annoyingly arrogant, but nevertheless her desire to become a hero and help is genuine. More tsun than dere. Basically, an anime rich lady with that one laugh. Has heard all vampire jokes by now.
  • Quirk: Vampire (Transformation)
    • Effect: The base function of Carmilla's Quirk is to improve her physical attributes by drinking someone else's blood, be it conserved or fresh from the source (she has no sharp canines, but her teeth are tough enough to bite through bone), going from fit to strong enough to push a van effortlessly. The effect lasts about fifteen minutes for an equivalent of a mug or a hearty bite. As Hamilton Gaunt - the progenitor of the family, who later renamed himself to Vlad Tepes - found out, direct bites had a side effect of gaining a fraction of the other's Quirk; the amount of power gained depended on the severity of the bite. Some particularly gruesome bites, the kind that will inevitably cause serious damage to the victim, if not prove to be outright lethal - for Gaunt was hardly a saint, as were some of his descendants - could even give the Vampire user a watered-down version of the victim's Quirk - albeit complete with its weaknesses. Over generations, descendants of Gaunt preserved:
      • The ability of limited shapeshifting - Carmilla can turn into a wolf or a wolfwoman, as well as grow usable batwings (can't turn into a straight up bat though)
      • Minor regeneration - small wounds and scrapes heal off right away, and she can even reattach missing parts of her body like a frayed earlobe or fingers.
      • The ability to brainwash someone with an imposing look - as a particularly villainous quirk, in her opinion, Carmilla refrains from using it and so it's grown weaker in her possession.
      • Relative gravity - as in, she can walk on walls and ceilings.
      • Enhanced sense of smell and hearing, about twice as good as that of those with "normal" senses.
    • With good fortunes/misfortunes she could very well gain other powers...
  • Downsides:
    • Overfeeding may cause her to enter a period of bloodlust, during which she, uh... may turn a little feral, with just enough self-control to attack the bad guys rather than allies. While her strength is much greater than after a normal portion, the aftermath induces paralyzing headache, nausea and vertigo. Obviously, if someone's Quirk makes their blood in some way poisonous, she drinks that with full risk of injury and or/death.
    • Shapeshifting is only accessible when not under direct sunlight/UV light. While Carmilla herself is not bothered by it - in fact she enjoys sunbathing - that part of her Quirk is sealed off until she hides from under the solar gaze, and only after it "recharges"; about three hours of staying indoors and out of sight to be able to shapeshift again.
    • Regeneration is not only negated by silver, it is incredibly lethal to her on the whole. Being struck with a silver object, even if it's a mere tap, will cause her skin to sizzle. She can heal by drinking blood and applying cooling gel once she stopped sizzling, but otherwise merely touching a silver object with no gloves can burn away her fingertips. A strike with a silver weapon meant to kill is likely going to be lethal outright.
    • The brainwashing fortunately seems to have no drawbacks (beyond tiring eyes out should she use it), but the relative gravity has her react with incredible vertigo at the sight of tiny scattered objects like coins or beans, to the point she can drop off the wall/ceiling.
    • Enhanced senses react twice as strongly to all sources; pungent smells are repulsive, loud noises are ear-piercing etc. You can scare her away with garlic, but expect a lot of high-class pouting afterwards.
  • Appearance: In her smart casual attire. Something more everyday. Stands at 5'8 of pale beauty with metallic gray hair and blood red eyes, as well as elf ears. As said, no canines. Most of her outfits tend to mix white, black, and red together, and they all wash incredibly easily (if they aren't outright immune to staining).
  • Costume: Hasn't submitted anything yet. Is thinking of some gothic lolita aesthetic, but is yet to commit to it.
  • Abilities/Skills:
    • Fluent in Romanian and Japanese.
    • Highly athletic and skilled in close combat martial arts. Despite her distinguished appearance, she favors brutal approaches by way of combining Muay Thai and inboxing. It has a use; she can have a taste of the opponent's blood by breaking their nose rather than going for a telegraphed bite.
    • Dances mean Waltz.
    • An accomplished accordionist and organist.
    • Has just about all vampire trivia in a little finger. Don't try her, it's not gonna end well.
  • Equipment:
    • A few plastic vials containing government-approved and clear blood from willing donors.
    • Gloves and boots with iron studs/soles for fightin', as well as reinforced elbow and kneepads; accommodated for her shapeshifting.
    • A couple cooling gels for whenever she starts burning.
  • Backstory: Back at the onset of Quirks, some c-lister villain by name of Hamilton "Ghoul" Gaunt used by more influential figures as a muscle for hire, discovered that he can breathe fire. Being smart enough to realize him biting the aorta out of a fire-wielding hero he was fighting yesterday may have something to do with it, Gaunt began experimenting with this newfound upgrade. Over time, he grew in "ranks" of villainy, shedding his previous aesthetic and becoming a lord of the night, Vlad Tepes, and one of the most notorious villains of the early Quirk generations, seemingly unstoppable from how he could wield just about any power he could think of. While felled, his descendants - and Gaunt was a rake - thrived and found themselves holding the infamous "vampiric" powers.
    • Present day. The current heir of the curse of the Dracul, Carmilla Van Helsing, is a recent take from the "main" family line that tries her best to throw away the sordid legacy of her progenitor and his unworthy predecessors. Those who turned to heroism - or at least a decent life - were in the minority, and so all with "vampiric" powers were looked down upon with suspicion. Even her late mother, Scarlet Countess, had her good name tarnished by those who were afraid of the old boogeymen, downplaying her achievements and her outstanding service for the American people. Carmilla's admission to Alt Academy is to continue the work of her mother and restore her good name through her own service and accomplishments.
  • Tidbits: Lives in an outrageously large mansion styled into a gothic castle, complete with a group of servant staff, spooky gargoyles and a trike shaped like a skeleton. (she has a driving license, don't worry) To say she's loaded would be an understatement. Also has an Irish Wolfhound named Lugosi.

  • Name: Oscar Jama
    • Hero Name: Gourmand Hero, Kung Food
  • Age: 17 years old
  • Personality: Oscar believes that a good enough work ethic can overcome any obstacle and can be a bit rude when he thinks people are slacking off. He takes things overly seriously and frequently misses out on social cues.
  • Quirk: Gourmand (Mutant)
    • Effect: Oscar can eat literally anything he can fit in his mouth. Wood, mud, paper, plastic, rocks... All of it is edible for Oscar. They are even a little bit nutritious, meaning he can survive without what most people would classify as 'food' provided he has other things he can eat.
    • Drawbacks: The nutritiousness of normally non-edible items is pretty low, so Oscar would be hard pressed to live solely off of his Quirk. Also there are basically no realistic combat uses for this Quirk. It also does not protect his mouth from potentially getting cut up by shards of glass or splinters if he isn't careful when eating such things. Luckily, once it passes into the throat, it's safe from there out.
  • Appearance: "Practice makes progress."
    • Costume: The featured gi and gloves in the above art is Kung Food's costume. The gloves a little oversized and hide brass knuckles to help give him a bit of an edge when fighting opponents that might be a little nastier than he'd like them to be. He also has pockets filled with nuts and bolts as well as a bottle of hot sauce in case he needs a snack.
  • Abilities/Skills: Oscar is a trained martial artist, having been practicing since a very young age. He specializes in jiu-jitsu, kick boxing, and capoeira. Through grueling training, Oscar also developed a great deal of determination and tenacity, with the downside of also making him incredibly stubborn.
    • Equipment: Not much other than what is listed in the Costume section. He also has a phone (but who doesn't these days).
  • Backstory: For as long as Oscar can remember (and a bit longer, as his parents informed him), he always wanted to be a hero. Protecting those who couldn't protect themselves, being part of a greater community devoted to justice, being famous... All these things conspired to make Oscar long for the hero life. Unfortunately, it seemed fate had no interest in allowing him to pursue that path, as he was saddled with a Quirk that seemed to usher him towards a life of cooking or other sedentary tasks. Determined to follow his dream (and quite frankly deeply enjoying the rush of martial arts), Oscar nevertheless pushed himself harder in a decade than most people would in their lives. But that still was not enough, as his first attempt at application was rejected on the grounds that his Quirk would not make him equipped to handle the hero life. Oscar, though, refused to give up and continued to train. More importantly, he learned his lesson and could at least figure out what he had to do to get in. Oscar lied about his Quirk on his second attempt, claiming that eating traditionally non-edible substances actually gave him a power and energy boost. Whether this lie was known and brushed aside for the majorly athletic teen or was believed didn't matter to Oscar; his destiny as a hero was finally within grasp and he had no intentions of letting it go.
  • Tidbit: Oscar is very talented at his martial arts but is not the best at any of them within his age group; others possess Quirks that allow them to better master the fighting styles than he can. While he usually a gracious loser, he loathes being outperformed in his area of expertise and can be easily goaded by someone who has bested him in hand-to-hand combat.

@Evil Paladin: I like the idea of somebody lying about the specifics of their Quirk. And while Gourmand is pretty close in nature to an already existing Quirk, I feel like there's enough of a stipulation for it to be its own thing (in that its relegated to things he can normally fit in his mouth and it has no effect in how easy he can chew it). Kung Food is Accepted! Oh, and it would be a Mutant Quirk, for the record: it's a permanent change in biology. Thus, uh, "mutant".

@Fergard Stratoavis: So, I'm going to need a lot of clarification here. First things first, is the Vampire Quirk the Quirk Carmilla has, as in the Quirk has changed from its original form since Gaunt had it and after so many alterations has become Vampire? Or is Vampire just the blood-drinking part and she also has these holdover, individual Quirks? Secondly, when you mean "particularly gruesome bite", does it relate to the actual severity of the attack or the amount of blood drank? And third, well, is less of a question and more of a worry. A Quirk that has the potential to steal other Quirks and add it to itself is very troubling for a lot of reasons; not only could Carmilla feasibly take the Quirk of anyone in the RP, its also exceedingly rare within the setting (to the point that One For All, the hero's main Quirk in the manga/anime, is kept a secret entirely). I won't stop you outright from having that included, but I would like an idea on how public this information is, and for you to be aware that it might not happen within the roleplay.

  • Firstly, I think the information is entirely public, and has been since Vampire Heroes became a thing (so, uh, three generations, I guess). It's not quite like AFO in that the Quirks received are watered down versions of original Quirks and generally do not improve nor can be mixed together. All that can be done is to cultivate them or not, and they may either fade away or become marginally stronger for her descendants.
  • Vampire is the latter; though the hard teeth is Carmilla's father's Quirk (the original Vampire quirk had no assistance, but Gaunt was fucking crazy and a slave to his ghoul aesthetic). A blessing and a curse, really, since it makes it somewhat more difficult to non-lethally bite someone.
  • I think it would be the amount of blood drank. I didn't quite clarify it well enough there, I can see that.
  • Well, she can't take Mutation Quirks beyond making them into weaksauce Transformation Quirks (big if), but the worry is understandable. I have other character ideas on hand; if you think this one cannot be worked with I can submit another character instead. I just wanted to play some kind of vampire character, and needed to have some kind of feasible explanation for powers unrelated to the main Quirk rather than "Vampire - She can do anything a vampire can do!"

  • Name:Momorin Asakusa
    • Hero Name: Ice-Cold Hero, Glacia.
  • Age: 17
  • Personality:Reserved, but not exactly shy. Tries not to speak too much. Would likely be a shut-in were it not for school and life. Could come off as standoffish.
  • Quirk:Flash Freeze, Emitter
    • Abilities:A Quirk that allows the user to utilize and freeze moisture in the air into solid ice and allows free manipulation of said ice. Can be utilized as armor, weaponry, or projectiles in a range of 5 meters around the user. Once out of range or if willed to do so, the ice returns to being water vapor.
    • Downsides:Overuse will lead to fatigue and in rare cases exposure to the ice may cause the body to chill to the point of frostbite or hypothermia. As the Quirk utilizes water vapor, dry climates will render the user nearly powerless without extreme exertion or assistance.
  • Appearance:Momorin is usually seen wearing a large blue hooded sweatshirt and dark pants regardless of weather, along with a bulky set of headphones. Underneath she wears a black tanktop over a petite frame. Her hair is cropped short to just above the nape of her neck and almost resembles a blue bowl on her head. She has dull grey eyes and wears glasses.
    • Hero Costume: You see Update Jammer here? take away the radar dish, slim the backpack down and have the sleeves flare out while making it dark blue and grey in color and that's basically Glacia.
  • Abilities/Skills:Momorin is more book smart than street smart and his very tactically minded, able to plan around 2 steps ahead of some opponents.
    • Equipment:The costume's backpack contains a small water tank (about 1.5 liters) connected to a tube network in her suit that regularly sprays water vapor out of the ends of her sleeves, just in case it's too dry. An indicator on the sleeve tells the water level and can switch the emitters on and off.
  • Backstory:Momorin, Momo for short, received a scholarship offer for Alt Academy while she lived in Japan with her family after attending a recruitment event on a whim, previously showing no interest in a school like UA. Before that, she lead a simple life with her family, but ended up moving to Los Niras with her brother a year before attending Alt Academy. Momorin comes from some money, but doesn't think to hard about it, having taken the scholarship at her parent's behest and is living in a former warehouse her family bough in Los Niras that her and her brother turned into what amounts to an oversized studio apartment. She speaks near fluent English, but has a heavy accent and regularly slips into Japanese, if she decides to speak.
  • Tidbit:Momo likes music and video games and regularly listens to Japanese music and video game soundtracks on her headphones. She also likes how the sound echoes in her home.

@Fergard Stratoavis: Hmmm. I'll let you keep Vampire as it was, but with a hard rule: the amount of blood that needs to be drank from a person to have their Quirk attributed to Vampire would need to be excessive, to the point where a normal-to-above-average person would suffer serious, most likely fatal damage if they lost that much. Around 1,500 mL.

It can keep the small, temporary residual 'borrowing' of the drinkee's Quirk, though.

@Skyzerk: Nothing to really bring up with this one. Glacia is Accepted!

  • Name: Jay Chaudhari
  • Hero Name: The Silent Hero, Cardiac
  • Age: 15
  • Personality: Chipper to such a degree that no-one can remember a time when Jay Chaudhari was down in the dumps. They haven't been dealt the best hand, and they've figured the best way to live with that is refuse to let the hard times get to them. Energetic, creative, and 'talkative' (see below), life with Jay can be many things- exciting, annoying, eclectic- but it's never boring.
  • Quirk: Heart Sonar (Mutant)
    • Effect: Marvel at Jay's wondrous ability to hear a person's heartbeat from any distance! Where others hear words, Jay instead hears the steady thump-thump of blood pumping through our veins. This power has no maximum limit- although, with how many hearts there are in the world, the ability to track just one of them become more difficult the further they are away from Jay. But still, they can hear through walls! Under floors! Within water or in the sky! Even better, by focusing intently on one heartbeat, Jay can also hear the blood it pumps through a person's veins, giving them an idea of how that person is going to move before they do! However, this requires intense concentration, making it better suited for one-on-one clashes.note
    • Drawbacks: Heartbeats are the only thing that Jay is capable of hearing- they are legally considered deaf, with years of therapy and aid doing nothing to change that. Moreover, while their sonar can focus itself onto a specific heartbeat, it can never truly silence the other hearts out. This brings the threat of over-stimulation in crowds.
  • Appearance: Like this, if a little younger. Covered by their hair are a pair of ears similar in shape to those of a horseshoe bat.
    • Costume: Similar in design to the one on the left, expect without the head visor. It's composed of a light kevlar that priorities flexibility over defense. It can protect against blunt weaponry, glancing blades, and reduces a standard pistol gunshot from fatal to a cracked rib, but doesn't stand up so well against piercing attacks. The covers around the ears help adjust the sensitivity and directionality of Jay's sonar.
  • Abilities/Skills:
    • Fluent in English, Hindi, and ASL.
    • Has received training from a young age in the martial art of Jeet Kune Do, their mother's preferred style of fighting. While their deafness has impaired them from reaching the level of their expert peers, they nevertheless have enough years of practice to make them a formidable opponent.
    • Can type so fast it'll make your head spin.
  • Equipment:
    • A phone equipped with the most up-to-date text-to-voice technology. The typed word is getting further away from Microsoft Sam with each passing day!
    • A pair of noise-cancelling headphones, for those crowds that threaten over-stimulation.
    • Aside from their provided equipment, Jay is also usually in possession of a free bus pass and enough spare change for a teen to enjoy a day out.
  • Backstory: The only child of vaunted superheroine Glean, she who is rumored to hear a pin drop on the other side of the world, Jay's family was understandably worried when Jay lost almost all of their hearing around the same time that they learned to walk. The only sound left that they could discern was at first thought to be drums, and was later in their life clarified to be heartbeats- a rather unusual combination of their mother's super senses and their father's hemokinesis (for those wondering, he serves as the main breadwinner of their family thanks to his successful tenure as a doctor). Not to be deterred by their esoteric Quirk, Jay worked hard to follow in their mother's footsteps: Glean has many fans the world over, but none of them adore her as much as her own child does. With years of blood and sweat put into the art of mastering Jeet Kune Do, Jay is successfully accepted at Altelié Academy (a move that some nay-sayers consider to be a diversity hire, but it's best not to bring that up in earshot of Jay- even if they can't hear it).
  • Tidbit: If you've ever happened upon a short story online, authored by one silentsongbird and detailing the grand but joyful adventures of plucky underdogs, chances are it was penned by Jay's swift hand. At age twelve or so they were finally able to put into words why they thought gender was silly, and since then has identified as non-binary.

  • Name: Richard "Rick" Johnson
    • Hero Name: Copycat Hero, Mind's Eye
  • Age: 16 on the edge of 17.
  • Personality: A goofball at heart, Rick is a hothead lead by his heart before his brain. Often impulsive and unpredictable, Rick uses his brain not as a decision maker, but as a processor and a tool to know what the best tool for the situation is. He's admittedly not the brightest, but he makes up for that with a knack for reading people, a big heart, and plans that can be dumb enough to work.
  • Quirk: Copycat. Jokingly called Power Plagiarism by Rick. A Hybrid Quirk masquerading as an Emitter Quirk.
    • Effect: As long as it is physically possible for him to do (meaning no major shapeshifting, but things like extra flexibility or super strength is fine), Rick can copy up to 3 Quirks at a time just by seeing them in action, at their power he copies them at, and can use all of them simultaneously.
    • Drawbacks: There are three major drawbacks to this Quirk. The first being, well, it's not infinite. He can only copy Quirks his physiology would allow, nothing like turning into a bat or making his legs a drill. Strike two is that the more Quirks he has copied, the less powerful the individual Quirk is. And finally, if he copies a Quirk when it isn't being used to it's full potential, he has the unfortunate drawback of having it stuck as that until he decides to drop and re-copy the Quirk, which naturally isn't the most tactically sound thing to do.
  • Appearance: Shallot's outfit here on a guy looking like this. Neither of these are mine, just kinda found them. When he's using Copycat, he gains a cat-like eye on his forehead.
  • Abilities/Skills:
    • Rick can mix a damn good drink; Considering who raised him, this isn't that hard to believe...
    • Rick can see under the hood of his Hero Costume. It's his strongest ability, I tell ya.
    • Rick has basic combat skills in boxing and mixed martial arts, incorporating it with some overly flashy shtuff he sees in the fighting games.
  • Equipment: Rick's hero costume is made of durable fabric inside and out that can withstand any temperature, pressure, or change in state. It's really there to make sure his wardrobe doesn't malfunction when he copies a more elaborate Quirk, but it works pretty well defensively too. However, that doesn't mean he isn't hurt by attacks.
  • Backstory:
    • Rick is the son of Pro Hero Marina Los Santos, AKA "Copy Hero, Thief's Kiss" and 3rd generation bar owner Bobby Johnson, owner and lead bartender of All Night, a superhero novelty bar with great drinks and a better atmosphere for heroes and helpers alike!
    • Bobby's Quirk is Auto-Recipe, a Quirk where he can read, hear, or even taste a recipe for a dish or drink and instantly remember it. Marina's Quirk is Stolen Kiss, where she can temporarily steal someone's Quirk by giving them a good peck. How does this combine? Rick's Quirk, Copycat, of course!
    • Rick grew up pulled in two different directions. His little sister, Josephine, got an odd variation of their parent's Quirks, Breather, where she can instantly memorize any sort of info as long as she speaks it out loud, and Rick got the long end of the stick. His father wanted him to continue the family business, whereas his mom urged him to become a pro hero.
    • Rick's parents taught him the basics of each of their trades, and together taught him how to use his Quirk. Years of indecision went by, and all of a sudden two things happened back-to-back: His sister showed great skill in bartending and cooking, and All Might went into retirement. And like that, his fate was decided, whether he wanted it or not; he would go to Alt Academy and become a hero. Of course, All Might's final words as a hero gave him that push in the right direction anyhow...
    • Rick started late, almost to the point of ineligibility, with his 17th birthday approaching fast. However, he was let in, and began his journey...
  • Tidbit: Rick was invested enough in the fighting game scene to place decently well in local tournaments; if he had pursued a career in bartending, he would have possibly become one of the best in Central California.

  • Name: Claus Messenger
    • Hero Name: Hit-Box Hero: Mirage
  • Age: 16
  • Personality: You wouldn't think of this kid as the sort of person who would want to be a hero, and that's because he really isn't. A self-interested coward who has trouble saying no, he's mainly doing this because he doesn't have the heart to tell his parents who have wholeheartedly supported him going down this path that he's not really interested anymore. He likes to think of himself as smarter than everyone else around him for being cynical, but in reality he's simply a teenager who hasn't yet entirely worked through their edgy phase. He likes to act like he's above silliness and goofing off, but when he feels like he's alone it flips a mental switch and he tends to laze around for hours on end. While highly hypocritical, he is still fairly perceptive about other people's flaws. He has a strong desire to meet the expectations of others and not disappoint them, but he tries to act in a way that sets low standards to start with. Once higher standards are established, though, he will strive to meet them.
  • Quirk: Collision Control (Transformation)
    • Effect: This quirk grants the user a spherical zone of a size very roughly related to body mass, currently up to around a six foot radius, centered on the user. The user can shift the "hitbox" of any part of their body to any location in this zone that isn't occupied by another form of matter. The smallest size of an individual segment which he can separate the collision zone for is the size of an eyeball, though there is no maximum size beyond that he only has so much body. Though the actual parts of his bodies are scattered around, he is always visible as a complete body in the center of his quirk's area of effect, and can move that body (which functions as the center of his quirk's area) around like normal even when it has basically no collision points left in it... still needs collision to physically interact with things, though.
    • Drawbacks: When it comes to drawbacks, the biggest one to this quirk is that the area in which the body's "hitboxes" can be moved is not terribly large. This means that it's not so useful against anything with a sufficiently area of effect component to it. Aside from this, while it is possible to have an individual hitbox for any chunk of the body, taking a hit to, say, a separated hitbox for his heart specifically would mean his heart is literally getting hit, which means that if he wants to actually survive someone managing to hit him he'd need to make sure that the vital organ hitboxes are protected by the hitboxes for less important parts of the body. Additionally, moving his collisions outside of his body means not being able to interact with things as effectively. Can't pick anything up with your actual hand if things phase right through it, for instance. Finally, his senses come from wherever the hitbox for the associated body part is, rather than from where the eyes, ears, etc. appear to be on his body.
  • Appearance: Claus is a slightly short guy for his age, standing at around 5 feet and 6 inches tall. He's somewhat pudgy, his weight putting him somewhat above a healthy range, though he does have some actual muscle beneath the layer of fat. Just not very visible in the baggy clothes and jackets he enjoys wearing. You'd never guess he wasn't a healthy weight, looking at him, because the clothing obscures his frame. His skin is slightly pale, a consequence of not spending nearly enough time actually outside, and his brown hair is kept sort of short but still is messy and greasy. He walks hunched over slightly, making himself appear shorter than he is, and generally is good at just acting like living scenery in between contributing to conversations.
  • Costume: The costume isn't too important to Claus, as with the way his quirk works he isn't really wearing it most of the time. What's most important to him is a costume that has as few separate parts as possible, so that he doesn't need to leave as many collision points in his body to keep the whole thing from falling through him. Therefore, he wears a large black cloak that keeps him well covered up, and mainly just keeps his shoulders colliding to keep the darn thing on.
  • Abilities/Skills: Claus has incredibly good skills at spatial thinking, something he had to hone to get even the most basic uses out of his quirk. He never forgets the paths he's walked and he has an almost instinctual understanding of how to navigate places thanks to his highly developed sense of direction. When it comes to fighting training, he's had none at all. However, he is stronger than his pudgy appearance suggests and knows how to throw good punches, which can be all he needs a lot of the time since his quirk lets his fists come from nearly anywhere around him. He also has a very keen mind for academic matters when he actually bothers to apply himself, and rarely forgets things he has learnt.
  • Equipment: He doesn't need much, but he will get a baton to hit things with because better to have than not.
  • Backstory: When Claus was born, it was thought that he had no quirk. This was mainly because of the fact that the zone his quirk works in was relative to his body weight, and at his newborn weight it only extended a few centimeters from his skin. Since the growth was exponential, though, by the time he was a few months old it was obvious that there was in fact a power hiding there after all. Fast forward a bit. Claus went through a bit of a phase where he was obsessed with heroes, a time he considers incredibly embarrassing and wants to forget about, but his parents didn't forget. Loving though oblivious parents that they are, they were certain a hero was what he wanted to be. Though unhappy with it, he was too afraid of disappointing them to come clean about how he was long past wanting that. Now he's going to become a hero less out of some burning desire for justice and more out of the same feeling a person pushed into med school by their parents has. He never planned on actually getting accepted to Alt, but his pride and desire to not make his parents disappointed pushed him to give it his all. Much to his surprise, despite not having the right mindset for it, he has a knack for the practical part of heroism and managed to get accepted. Now he's just going through the motions, unsure of what he'll do with himself.
  • Tidbit: Though he doesn't seem to take anything too seriously, he has a strange love of sudoku puzzles that he doesn't want anyone to know about because it doesn't fit the image he wants to have. He'll frequently be solving one out of sight by using his quirk to manipulate the pencil and look at it without seeming like he's not paying attention.

So basically I'm unsure about the wording of the quirk but I hope I managed to get the point across.

Why is a yam attacking me?

Um, well, I'm putting together a sheet right now...although quirk I'm still kind of fine-tuning and unsure on what'd work best in terms of balance so it's not overpowered. >_<

The general premise is being able to (mostly) harmlessly absorb energy from attacks, like kinetic energy from a punch, electrical energy from a lightning bolt or thermal/chemical energy from a fire for a few examples and basically being a human battery that could transfer that energy to something else, like using it to recharge the engine of a car for example or use it to give himself a temporary boost.

The main issues are whether they'd be able to convert the energy they absorb into another sort (like electrical energy into thermal or kinetic energy) at will or only after getting hit by a different type of energy and what, if any types he'd be limited to.

Hope you weren't expecting anything witty here. Maybe some day.
