Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment
%%
%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.
%%
%% We trope what DOES happen in works, not what MIGHT happen or is LIKELY to happen.
%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

Wasn't exactly sure where to ask this question, but I'll try here:

On Spider-Man: Spider-Verse, the short film The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story has a listed release date of 2023.

The issue is that, while the short film was screened at some film festival(s) in 2023, it hasn't been released to the public yet. In fact, it currently does not have a date for public release at all.

Should the release date be kept as 2023 or changed to TBA?

[up] I'd switch it to TBA.

Anyway, new Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A has been released, and someone already made a (Stubby, poorly formatted) page.

[up][up]I cut it, and as a side note, the title was invalid because hyphens aren't allowed in the names of work pages. A custom title should be used whenever the page gets made properly.

I corrected the Red Link for the page to VideoGame.Pokemon Legends ZA on Franchise.Pokemon and Video Games of the 2020s.

Release date is currently just the vague "2025" and we know very little about it, not sure what there even is to Trope at the moment.

As it's a sandbox, and the only feedback here was positive, I didn't set up a Crowner to formalise the decision - but Unreleased Works has now been redesigned (as proposed here) to use folders for each media type, rather than just three folders for the overarching categories.

Characters.Inside Out is full of uncited tropes for the sequel's new emotions. They can definitely be commented out, but should something more be done?

Revisiting the Crowner - as all of the other points were settled and added to Administrivia's policy page, let's revisit this one:

  • If an episodic work (or a series of related works) allows early access to a group of supporters via a paid subscription (e.g. webcomics or songs released early via Patreon) then that access doesn't count as a release.

This differs from the usual early release model because it's an ongoing commitment and supporters can't directly purchase access to individual instalments - whereas if anyone could directly make a single payment to receive Tuesday 22nd's free webcomic on Monday 21st, that would fall under the usual early release rules.

We can fine-tune exact wording on the Administrivia thread if the Crowner gets consensus - but is there anything here that needs to be resolved before it goes to the Crowner stage? If not, I'll add it tomorrow and post to ATT to draw attention to it.

Blood Hunt lists the Big Bad for an unreleased work. That feels a bit speculative, as the villains presented in promos aren't always the true Big Bad...?

[up] Big Bad is someone who creates the conflict. If (if!) promotional material say Bloodcoven are main villains, they fit and later developments will turn it into subversion.

However, I have some problems

  • "ironically, Dracula isn't this" smells like Averted Trope. The example needs to focus on Bloodcoven entirely, and not only it doesn't say what they do, it doesn't really name them as antagonists, so it's ZCE.
  • Per Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work all examples need citations what are they based from explicitly.

And promotional material is not normally allowed as a citation. We need something that purports to represent the work itself - e.g. excerpts - not interviews and other promos.

From that Administrivia page:

In covering pre-release works, we are only troping things that purport to represent the work itself, and its advertising solely as advertising.
  • Things that purport to represent the work itself includes trailers, teasers, gameplay footage, demos, open betas, and text excerpts. They are representing the work, instead of describing.
  • Advertising includes official websites, press releases, posters, etc. These are items intended to hype up the work itself, but typically do not include materials from within the work itself. We will not presume that a statement on a website is confirmation of a trope unless it is further corroborated with footage from the game/a trailer of the movie/an excerpt of the book/etc. If it does not fit under Advertising Tropes, it should not be included.

That seems fairly clear?

I can understand cutting the Pokémon legends page because there wasn’t enough tropable material, but to be clear, how specific does a release window for a video game need to be? Is just a year enough?

Either way, I think the instructions need to be made more specific on that.

Speaking of Pokemon, there's a draft for the page, which seems okay to me since it's unofficial, but it also has a YMMV page already, which seems like skirting the rules since there's no official page for it yet. Though maybe the YMMV page could be moved to a sandbox as well for bookkeeping.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I have two things to say:

1) Is there any rule for television shows (animated or live-action) premiering late in the evening? As in, they don't actually start airing until around 7pm or later. I ended up repeating this mistake three times (the Archer Finale Movie, Tracker (2024), and recently The Valley)

2) Do we count platforms that have been officially announced by their manufacturer in the same category as upcoming works? 'Cause a few hours ago, Microsoft has announced that they're working on a native handheld for their Xbox consoles.

Found this on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice:

  • What Happened to the Mouse?: One of the pre-release mysteries is the ultimate fate of the Maitlands in the interim since the original film. In-universe, the Maitlands should still have just under 90 years left on their 125 year "probation" before they can move onto the afterlife. However, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis are not (officially anyway) credited among the returning cast and so it's currently unknown what's become of Adam and Barbara.

Cut?

[up][up]

  1. Whatever time it airs is the official release time. For linear broadcasts, that means it releases at a rate of one minute per minute.
  2. The Xbox handheld has not been officially announced, but that's beside the point. Platforms aren't works, so there's nothing to trope.

While I was editing the Unreleased Works I noticed that ARK: The Animated Series was still listed on "no released dates" despite being released two days ago. In fact there are a lot of works that have been released months or even years ago that are still listed on the second and third headings, including works that have undergo a release date or title change or have been officially cancelled. It be one thing if the work was suffering from little promotion and premiered with little to no fanfare, but ARK had a significant amount of promotion that I am surprised that no one - not even me - updated it to the first folder.

I've mentioned on both this thread and on the Discussion page that this has been (and still is) a recurring problem that needs to be taken care of. I've largely contributed to the sandbox by moving works that have an official trailer and/or release date to the first folder, removing works from the second or third folders that had already been released regardless of promotion, and updating the works on the page (e.g. release dates, production statuses, working titles).
