This is Exactly What It Says on the Tin; a discussion thread for the soft reboot of My Superhero Academy. However, most actual discussions are probably going to be on the Discord, so this will most likely be used primarily for world building. And speaking of which...

The World

MSA's world isn't exactly the same as the one we know. Thanks to a combination of refugees from other dimensions, visitors from other planets, and once seemingly mythical races becoming very distinct realities, non-humans have gradually become commonplace. At first, such races were subject to mass discrimination and dehumanization, but over the years, there's been a lot of progress. Largely thanks to Superheroes of all different sorts popularizing freaks and weirdos over a grand total of 80 years. (And counting.)

Today, what was once the Supernatural is now simply natural, and the very term itself is seen as an offensive slur. It's not too uncommon to see an alien working at a supermarket or a demon flying overhead in the suburbs, or for a werewolf to be acting as a nature guide. There have even been whole new laws enacted to support and protect non-humans, though this does raise concerns from more conservative groups from time to time.

Of course, not everyone feels the same way about non-humans. There are still those who see such beings as unnatural. As unholy abominations that go against their very way of life. Others still live in isolated communities, largely being kept away from the more fantastical parts of their world and being less receptive to anything that isn't 'normal'. Sapient non-humans are very hard for them to get used to if they can at all. In any case, there are enough of them that every so often, some group of radicals or another pops up, intent on returning things to the way they were before Saint popped up on the scene and ushered in a new age. But try as they might, it's not so easy to turn back the clock, and non-humans are here to stay.

In terms of culture, non-humans have affected it drastically. Sci-fi and fantasy have largely been absorbed into just general fiction, and shows like Star Trek or Supernatural either don't exist or have been altered dramatically. Non-humans have also created shows and works of their own, some of which have started to break into the mainstream.

On that note, non-humans as well as the existence of ridiculously smart individuals have dramatically advanced the world’s technological standing. Towering skyscrapers, flying cars, and large blimps dot the world. Food and resources are much less scarce, and numerous non-lethal sources of energy have been discovered. Technology and discoveries previously undreamt of are now common place, and there's already a colony on the moon with a second in the planning stages. This world is a much more advanced and stranger place than our own, for better or worse.

That said, nothing’s perfect. While nonhumans have largely been accepted by society and Superhumans are flourishing, there has been a growing divide between Superhumans/Nonhumans and normal ‘baseline’ humans. Some Superhumans and nonhumans are beginning to look down on baseline humans for being inferior, while some normal humans are starting to fear that they’re becoming obsolete. Which in some cases can lead to resentment. Certain groups are also taking steps to mitigate this. There are rumors of a group of werewolves attempting to turn humans enmasse, or a top secret thinktank attempting to bring Superbeings down to their level. Either way, there is a rift between Superhumans/Nonhumans and the rest of the population. And if they aren’t careful, it could easily turn into a chasm. One which certain people would be more than willing to take advantage of.

  • Most werewolves living in human society take vaccines to keep themselves from turning others into werewolves. It is the law. A select few for one reason or another do not.

TIMELINE

  • 1938: Saint shows up on the scene

  • 1939: Other heroes start appearing.

  • 1940: The Protectors are formed.

  • 1946: Hitler summons a demon horde in a last ditch effort to win WWII. This defeat leads to a number of demons surrendering or defecting to America and leads to the first batch of interdimensional/otherwordly immigrants/refugees on Earth. However, most humans are still afraid of other races, and so they are confined to other districts and heavily discriminated against.

  • 1947-1951: Other ‘hidden races’ like vampires and werewolves slowly begin to be revealed. Most of them still keep to themselves, but some attempt to settle into the general population with mixed results. The presence of Superheroes and the fact that some of them are ‘freaks’ and ‘weirdos’ make this slow, gradual transition somewhat easier.

  • 1952-1954: Mr Carthyism begins in earnest. Superheroes are heavily investigated by the US Government and the ‘hidden races’ begin receiving public backlash and are deliberately discriminated against even more, risking a war between humanity and everyone else.

  • 1955-1958: A parasitic alien race called the Godons invade Earth. Earth’s combined military and the hero population aren’t enough to defeat them. They manage to convince the hidden races to chip in, but it still isn’t enough. However, another much more friendly alien race called the Boffones decide to help Earth and fight off the Godons. With everyone working together, they manage to route the Godons and save the planet. Unfortunately Earth has been ravaged in the process, but the Buffons are able to help Earth rebuild, advancing their technology in the process. All of this leads to the publics’ faith in Superheroes being restored and other races beginning to be accepted by the general public. Plans are made to start talks with other species in the cosmos and begin liaisons with other planets, as well as seek out other hidden races.

  • 1959-1968, Part 1: Earth continues to grow and progress. The Boffones along with scientific and mechanical geniuses like Dr.Reinbach and Armada are able to create new self-sustaining, non-lethal power sources as well as non-radioactive substitutes for nuclear weapons. The Great Powers aren’t willing to give up MAD that easily, but replacing nukes with these weapons at least ensures that the Earth won’t become a radioactive wasteland. Hovercars become a thing and work on inter-city teleportation begins. After reaching the moon in 1960, plans are established to begin the first colony there. Reinbach and other scientists begin to look into other dimensions and establish contact.

  • 1959-1968, Part 2: However, there are still some issues to be dealt with. While other races are beginning to be accepted, there is still some racial discrimination. Discrimination and hate crimes against these other races leads to interracial discrimination being out of focus, but it still exists to an extent. As such, renowned public figures such as MLK and Malcom X still exist, but there are also public speakers from other species speaking out for their own kind. This leads to President Kennedy establishing rights for all races in 1964 before his assination, both for ‘coloreds’ and for other races. During this time, work on the first colony on the moon begins is earnest and is halfway finished by the end of the decade. Communications with other species continue and plans are made to eventually allow other species and refugees to immigrate to Earth in exchange for technology and resources.

  • 1969-1975: President Nixon is elected into office. His tenure is heavily mixed, and interspecies relations go back and forth between improving and being volatile. However, just as Watergate is in full swing, a breakthrough is made in interdimensional travel and contact is made with a parallel universe. However, said universe is a world where its’ entire Superhero population were instead Supervillains and had long conquered the world in its iron grip. With their own Superheroes and the US military, Earth is able to fend them off, which also puts an early end to US involvement in Veitnam as they struggle to deal with it. However, near the end of the Mirror Earth War, Nixon attempts to surrender as a result of the sheer pressure that this war and Watergate have saddled him with. This thankfully does not work, but it ensures that Nixon has absolutely no chance at saving face. Rather than resigning, he is impeached as soon as the war is done. The outcome also leads to interdimensional studies and relations being scaled back immensely out of fear that something like this could happen again.

  • 1976-1990, Part 1: Relations between other races continue to improve. Earth’s technology continues to advance. Laptops and the Internet are made public decades early, and teleportation stations between major cities are established. The first colony on the moon is completed in 1979, and select families start moving in. Immigrants and refugees from other worlds have started moving to Earth in earnest and plans are made to send ambassadors and representatives to their home planets.

  • 1976-1990, Part 2: In the midst of all this progress, Saint leaves the Protectors and goes into semi-retirement, but doesn’t rest on his laurels. With backing from the UN, he establishes Saint Foundation, a worldwide organization dedicated to promoting and organizing Superheroes the world over and allowing them to do hero work as a full time job. He also notices that Superheroes have started beginning hero work younger and younger and getting themselves killed in the process, so he eventually establishes the first Superhero school: Saint Academy. More of these schools are established the world over, but Saint Foundation’s schools are still the most renowned. Additionally, all these young Superheroes getting themselves killed leads to a law being passed that forces all Superheroes to get a license to do hero work, and that anyone under the age of 18 has to graduate from one of these schools to get it. By 1990, the rate of teenage Superhero deaths has decreased dramatically, largely due to having to attend such schools.

  • 1991-2001: By this point things are better than ever. Saint Foundation and Superhero academies are in full swing, and Superheroes have long been revered as public icons. Space travel is becoming more and more of a norm, and Earth is in the baby steps of becoming known throughout the cosmos. A second colony is built on the moon. Tablets and Smart phones are made public. And other races and species have largely been accepted by the public. Not that everyone is okay with this. A group called the Warriors of Earth begins attacking the other races and spreading hate and distrust among the populace, declaring themselves defenders of the Status Quo and desperate to turn things back to how they used to be. They obtain enough traction from extremist and reactionary groups to gain some headway, but due partly to acceptance of other races as well as general incompetence and stupidity on the Warriors’ part, they soon fall into obscurity just a few years later. Their most lasting influence would be providing the inspiration for the Soldiers of Gaea years later, who would have considerably more of an impact.

  • 2002-2018: Not much of note happens until 2018, at leas compared to previously. There are of course various advances and conflicts, but nothing out of the norm. There are various alien races and other dimensions that attempt to invade, but Earth’s defenses are so advanced and Earth’s hero population so large and organized that northing’s ever able to get off the ground. Not that there aren’t Supervillains and monsters still trying to wreck havoc or natural disasters to stop, but that’s largely been a way of life for the last several decades now. Aside from the growing tensions between normal humans and everyone else, the most interesting thing of note occurs in 2013 when Saint suffers a near fatal blow from an experimental weapon fired by longtime arch-nemesis Leon Leopold, though this isn’t made public knowledge until years later. It isn’t enough to kill him, but it does weaken him. Saint is forced to go into full retirement and he becomes the Principal of the original Saint Academy in Supercity, and he is still Principal as of 2018. However, Earth’s recent era of relative peace and tranquility will soon come to an end, as forces are set in motion that will threaten to tear down everything Saint and the Earth have built. And the only ones able to stop them will be Saint Academy’s Class 1.

  • 2018-2019: In late 2018 a group called Gaea appears. Operating as a corporation, their goal is to sow hatred and discord between the humand and superhuman/non-human communities, creating a rift that they can exploit and eventually use to dominate the planet. Thankfully they are stopped in early 2019 by a group of students from Class 1 disgusing themselves as villains, but it is costly. In retalation Gaea joins forces with a group of interdimensional Nazi's that had attempted to take over the planet the previous year and stage an attack on Super City. With the efforts of the students, Saint Foundation, and others, they manage to fend them off and stop Gaea for good. But the Saint dies as a result. After his death, Supervillains begin popping out of the woodwork seeking to take advantage of the chaos, and some heroes begin to question if Saint's way was the right way. Still, others seek to continue his legacy. In his memory the remaining staff at Saint Academy rebrand it as Saint University, opening their doors to all those who wish to become heroes.

  • 2019-2020: In the wake of Saint's death and with the wounds caused by Gaea still fresh, an organization of radical nonhumans comes together to combat nonhuman hate and bigotry while also providing cover for their true agenda. As they continue to gain followers and stir up support for nonhumans, they also attempt to locate a series of artifacts that would allow them to rewrite reality and create a world free of strife, where both humans and nonhumans would be able to live together in peace. However, half of the artifacts end up in the possession of Saint University. As such, they launched an unprovoked assault on the university to obtain the remaining artifacts. While they demonstrate an impressive show of force, they are unable to obtain the artifacts in the University's possesion and are scattered to the four winds, with their ringleader arrested. She is still awaiting trial, though she should receive her day in court by the end of the year.

Okay, this is the timeline of Krieger and the mavericks.

2002: Krieger accomplished his research. He turned himself into a superpowered humanoid. Since the research was not sanctioned, he slipped away before the German government found him.

2010: Krieger reemerged. This time he had the first generation (Alpha) of mavericks on his side. The mavericks were unleashed upon a Ukraine on a killing spree and even the soldiers barely slowed them down. The mavericks were stopped by the local superheroes.

2012: The second generation mavericks (Bravo) attacked an Israeli military base. They fought for days against the military and the superheroes stationed there. The mavericks were eventually overwhelmed by the combined firepower.

2013: Subject Delta-1 was commissioned. However, she would require intensive training and testing before she is battle ready.

2014: The third generation mavericks (Charlies) striked at a Superhero Academy. This brings the attention of Saint Solutions. Saint Foundations fought the Charlies to a standstill. The Charlies lost 3 mavericks, but they were still able to retreat. Saint Foundations would relentlessly hunt down Krieger from now on.

2016: The Charlies attacked an American suburb. However, it was just a ploy to distract Saint Solutions. In the same day, Delta-1 wreaked havoc on an American Air Base and killed two heroes. After the Charlies retreated, Saint Solutions flew the the airbase and saw Delta-1 crying while surrounded by corpses.

2017: After 1 year of intensive interrogation, Saint Foundation found Krieger's hideout. They finally destroyed Charlies and captured Krieger.

SAINT UNIVERSITY STAFF — Part 1

THE SAINT:The Saint (Nathan Nathanial,) grew up in the early 20th century in Boston. He was never sure how or why, but he was born with incredible powers and abilities. It was only later that he learned that this was far from a race occurrence; that others were born with strange and unusual abilities in the same way he was. Regardless, both of his parents were good and kind people, especially for the time. They instilled the values Saint would grow to live by and still holds today. That everyone is equal and deserves to be treated fairly, and that everyone is worth saving. They also taught him not to use his powers selfishly, nor to use them hap hazardly. If he simply went using his powers however he pleased, he would be considered a freak and a pariah. If he was going to use them, it needed to be in a way that would make the public feel at ease. Make them welcome. And after thinking long and hard, Saint knew how to do just that.

In 1938, Saint decided to become the world’s first ever Superhero. Not that he knew what a Superhero was. All he knew was that he wanted to use his powers to help people. Not only did he know he could make a difference, but by using his powers in such a way and by presenting himself as a paragon and an example, he could present himself not as a freak or a monster, but as a hero. On July 4th of that year, Saint made his public debut stopping a rampaging train gone out of control. Some were injured, but no-one on the train was killed, nor was anyone else. Saint become a nationwide sensation overnight. The only problem was there wasn’t any term invented yet to properly describe him, so the Papers made one for just such a purpose: ‘Superhero’.

Saint kept on fighting crime and saving the day while also giving interviews, showing up at special events, and giving himself as much exposure as possible. The more exposure he had, the more the people knew him and the more they could trust him. But unbeknowst to Saint, he had started something far beyond what he could have possibly imagined. All over the country, other heroes with amazing powers and abilities were making themselves known, fighting crime, saving lies, and occasionally even helping with natural disasters in the same way Saint was. It wouldn’t take longbefore some of them started to meet, and after stopping a team-up of some of their worst foes, they decided they could do more good together than apart. And on that day in 1940, the Protectors were formed.

Saint kept doing his part for decades to come. With him serving as a public figure and in the limelight, Superheroes would go on to become a bedrock of American society and beloved the world over. But by the 1980’s, he was starting to get on. His extended longevity insured he still wasn’t that old, but after being the face of the Superhero scene for long, he felt that there was still more he could do. Things he couldn’t do in a costume. In 1980 he demoted himself into a reservist Protector and went into semi-retirement, though he wouldn’t be resting on his laurels. Using the fortune he built up from all of those media deals over the decades, he created Saint Foundation and the first Superhero Academy shortly after, insuring that heroes would have a place where they could feel welcome and make a living off of their career path while also being able to learn the ropes without danger of getting themselves killed. He continue doing hero work when need be and would still make countless public appearances, but his days of the being at the forefront were behind him.

Not that Leon cared. In 2013, Leon Leopold held a power plant hostage only for it to be revealed to be a trap for Saint. Saint manages to save the workers and defeat Leon, but not without Leon getting a lucky shot. The weapon is an experimental ray. Normally it could kill someone in one shot, but with Saint being Saint, it instead created a weak spot. Saint would survive, but if he ever exerted himself too much, his weak spot would act up, causing him unbearable pain. And unlike most wounds, this was one Nurse Hello would not be able to fix. Saint had no choice but to go into full retirement, but he still wanted to make a difference. To that end he became Principal of the original Saint Academy, doing his best to ensure it was still the best academy for Superheroes anyone had ever seen.

Saint is kind, caring, upbeat, and an idealist, but neither is he naive. He knows that all of the world’s troubles can’t be fixed with just a nice smile and a handwave, but he still strives to do all he can to help and make the world a better place. He does have a more down to Earth size, and can get deadly serious when necessary. Towards the end, Saint dies of his wound, overexerting himself in an effort to protect the students. He is mourned not by just by the Superhero community, but by the world over.

Saint enjoys light dramas and comedies as well as thrilling actions movies, as long as there isn’t too much cynicism or blood and gore. He also enjoys reading up on various subjects and studies. ‘Knowledge is Power’. He also keeps himself in shape, not that he needs to.

Saint is one of the most powerful Superheroes on the planet. He’s incredibly strong and durable, and fairly fast. His only weakness is that wound on right shoulder. If that gets hit or he over exerts himself, he’s a sitting duck.

Sadly Saint died protecting Super City from a joint invasion by Gaea and interdimensional Nazi's last year. His death has thrown the Superhuman and nonhuman communties into dissarray, though many still seek to honor his memory.

SAINT UNIVERSITY STAFF PART 2

INTERCEPTOR: Real name O’Conner Mc Donnel. The Batman to Saint's Superman and Class 1's former homeroom teacher. Also a founding member of the Protectors. After seeing his best friend killed by some PUNK with a GUN at ten years old, he vowed to become someone that would ensure nothing like that would ever happen again. Taking various martial arts classes and studying as much as he could, he eventually became one of the best and brightest young men around, and soon thereafter embarked on a career as the Interceptor. Despite having no powers, he made up for that with his cunning and intellect, so much so that he became a founding member of the Protectors.

Over the years, Interceptor became even more dedicated to fighting crime and stopping evil. So much so that when the frailties of old age began to set in, he got his old teamate Armada to upload his brain into a robot body. This worked for a while, but he eventually still began to feel the weight of his years even if he would no longer die of them. He needed do something else with his life, at least for a while. To that end, he joined Saint Academy (now Saint University) as Chief of Security and a combat instructor, putting his decades of experience and practical know-how to good use. He's gained something of a reputation for being a hardass who never gives his students a break, but that's mainly because he wants to make sure they can be the best they can be. It may also have something to do with the fact that his old sidekick died in his first year on the job, but that couldn't have anything to do with it. Could it?

Interceptor is completely and utterly no-nonsense. He’s completely dedicated to the job at hand no matter what it may be, and doesn’t appreciate any funny business. There is a lighter, more open part of himself hidden in there somewhere, but it’s been buried underneath all his years of pain and misery. He’s also rather intelligent and a master planner, though far from omniscient.

Before becoming a cyborg, Interceptor didn’t have any powers. Instead, he was simply well trained and an expert combatant with many nifty gadgets. Now he’s super strong and decently fast and agile, can fly, is able to shoot laser beams out of his hands, and can even turn invisible. To be fair, putting one’s brain in a cyborg body isn’t too out of place in this day and age, but it’s still not all that common due to how expensive it is.

Interceptor is well versed in a multitude of different subjects and fields, but doesn’t care for most of them beyond the knowledge they offer. He does enjoy gritty action films and mysteries and is quite the history buff, though good luck getting him to talk about it.

ARMADA: The school's resident Chief Engineer and head of Tech Support. Also a founding Protector. Formerly Ben Holland, he was a lonely engineer and inventor working on his latest and greatest invention, a fully functioning android. However, when a group of mercs broke into his house to steal his work and accidentally shot him in the gut, he had no choice but to activate an emergency transfer process and upload his brainwaves into the android. Once successfully uploaded, he kicked the merc's arses, but now he had to deal with his current situation. Which was even more complicated due to the fact the android was female. So now he was dealing both with being stuck as an unaging robot and an identity crisis. Fun.

Eventually, (s)he managed to sort things out and was drawn into the Superhero community, becoming a founding member of the Protectors. Over the years, she continued to serve with the team, upgrading her body all the while. She could have created a new male body for herself if she wanted, but after being stuck as a female for so long, she couldn't think of herself any other way. That said, like Interceptor, she eventually began to feel the weight of her years and desired a change of pace. And Saint Academy (now Saint University) was the perfect outlet. Now the school's Chief Engineer and head of Tech Support, she keeps the school and it's defenses in tip-top shape while also teaching classes on engineering, computer science, and similar topics Cool, calm, collected, and almost always in a good mood, she's also a voice of reason and a foil to Interceptor, who is... not. She’s also helped contribute numerous significant advances to Earth’s technology over the years, and she and Reinbach have worked together more than once. But for now, she’s content being a humble engineer at Saint Academy.

Armada is laid back, fun-loving, extroverted, and always ready for some action. However, she’s also more than sensible enough to know when discretion is the better part of valor, and generally plays things safe despite part of her wanting to mix it up. She’s also incredibly intelligent and a brilliant engineer and inventor, even having created various robots and AI’s over the years. She’s more or less the premier expert on both subjects. She also knows how to upload a human brain into a robot body, though this is only as a last resort.

As a robot, Armada is naturally superstrong, durable, can fly, is able to shoot laserbeams out of her hands, and can form a protective forcefield around herself and others in a pinch.

Armada enjoys books on technology as well as science-fiction, and she also likes action thrillers intelligent comedies, and porn. She also enjoys building new machines and inventions and working on new forms of technology, though she still doesn’t mind taking a break every now and then.

Additionally, Armada also has an adoptive daughter in Sally. She rescued her after she was gravely wounded in a fatal accident, and gave her cybernetic attachments to replace her missing body parts. Seeing as Sally had no parents and had just been turned into a cyborg of all things, she took her in, raising her as her own. Since then, the two have become very close with Armada thinking of her as her own daughter, though her job as Saint Academy's Chief Engineer means she hasn't been able to spend as much time with her as she would like. Though now that Sally's started attending SA as a student, that shouldn't be a problem.

NURSE HELLO: Nurse Joyce Hello grew up in Super City. After the first Superhero Academy was built there, Super City became nearly crime free, so Hello didn’t have to deal with supervillain attacks or any real unpleasantness. However, she was born with a special ability. That being to heal anyone. Up until she was 14, she hadn’t really done much with her life other than have fun and sleep around, but the truth was that she was actually fairly intelligent. Eventually she decided it was high time that joined. She decided to use her abilities to help people, first attending Saint Academy and then going on to become a professional nurse. And as fate would have it, Saint Academy (now Saint University) was in desperate need of a nurse.

Nurse Hello is on the surface a vapid bimbo. She’s very nice and pleasant, but also seemingly vapid and air-headed and interested only in the superficial and pleasure. Beneath the veneer, she’s actually rather intelligent and an avid reader, and is well versed in all sorts of different subjects. She an also provide some surprisingly sage advice when she feels like it, even if it’s still worded like a valley girl.

Nurse Hello enjoys heavy drama and deep, intelligent works, but she also has a thing for smut. And sex. Because of course. She’s also well versed in many traditional healing techniques, not that most of them every get much use. She’s also bisexual.

Nurse Hello is able to heal anyone with her spit. She used to use it by flat out kissing her patients, but seeing as this received quite a bit of flak, she instead just holds their hands instead. Most of the time.

SAINT UNIVERSITY STAFF PART 3

DR.REINBACH: Science teacher. Formerly Dr.Nazi and an actual Nazi (WWII vintage!), the good Doctor has since renounced both his name and former ideology for... obvious reasons. Born in the late 1800’s and a young man during Hitler’s rise to power, he was seen as a loser and a weakling by those who called himself his ‘friends’. His parents did care for him, but sometimes it seemed like they thought the same. He vowed to get back at everyone who he ever felt wronged him. Even if it meant adopting a crazed and vile ideology to do it. As the war went on, Reinbach did some truly unspeakable things. But each time he did, rather than make him even more of an evil bastard, it instead awakened a sense of compassion and pity. And remorse. By the time the war was over, Reinbach was a broken man. Not only had he committed unmentionable acts, but it was all for nothing more than a power trip and a failed cause that he never truly believed in. And it was all worthless in the end anyway. He couldn’t possibly make up for what he had done and he knew it. But he could at least do the next best thing.

Formerly a Mad Scientist for the 3rd Reich during WWII, he promptly offered his services to Uncle Sam at the end of the war in exchange for clemency. After working on numerous projects for the US Government for several decades, they considered his debt to humanity paid in full and gave him a full pardon. Soon after that, he sought somewhere where he could work on his own personal projects while also getting out of the public eye and finally have some peace, and Saint Academy (now Saint University) — or rather it's basement — seemed like the perfect place. He gets to work on his experiments without being bothered — in the basement, miles underground, where no-one can see him — and all he has to do is teach punk kids some Science and Biology. And even those can still be fun. It's a win-win! Of course, one has to wonder what he's really doing down there... (He's also given himself superpowers by experimenting on himself. Namely flight, superstrength, electrical blasts, and extended longetivy. It's why he didn't keel over years ago.)

Reinbach is egotistical, somewhat amoral, energetic, crazed, and delights in making new creations and engaging in SCIENCE anyway he can. He is an expert scientist, perhaps one of the most skilled in his fields, and is absolutely brilliant. That said, there’s also another side to him. He doesn’t show it much, but underneath the mad scientist is a pathetic, broken man who despises himself for what he did during the War, and wishes he could take it all back. But he can’t. So all he can do is just keep living his life the best he can and move on. Because if he doesn’t? Then’ he’ll kill himself out of shame.

Reinbach enjoys books about science, biology, and tech, and also enjoys speculative fiction and hard drama. And he of course loves performing actual science experiments.

FLORA: Botany teacher and caretaker of both the gardens and the forest. Also a founding Protector. Originally a plant elemental from a dimension full of sentient plantlife, she decided that being part of one big Hive Mind collective wasn't enough for her. She wanted to be her own person, free to live her own life and make her own choices. And also do something other than sit around in the dirt all day. Not that it isn't refreshing to just stand in the grass and let the sheer overwhelming beauty of nature overwhelm you, but there had to be more to life than that. So when the Saint found himself tossed into her dimension in an early adventure, she didn't hesitate to go back to Earth with him. After that, she became a founding Protector, but eventually grew tired of all the fighting and longed to do something else with her life. Cue Saint Academy (now Saint University).

Flora is a lot like Evergreen ( a previous member of Class 1,) in some ways and yet different in others. She is generally very calm and collected, but also not very emotional. She tends to stay detatched and prefers to look at the big picture, and while she does care for other lifeforms and protecting him, it’s plant life that she’s most concerned with. She’s also very intelligent and shrewd.

Flora enjoys tending to her garden and mediating, though she occasionally enjoys documentaries and heavy dramas.

Flora has control over plants. Obviously.

JASMINE: Jasmine grew up in a community of satyrs in the forests of Greece. While many from various races had integrated themselves into human society, there were those who preferred to remain apart, and Jasmine’s community was just that. They spent their days and their VERY long lives sitting around and doing not much more than laying in the grass, playing pipe music, getting stoned, and just enjoying themselves. For Jasmine, this was fine for a good long while, but after 100 years (by which point satyrs in Greece had once again become public knowledge and accepted in only the last few decades), she was started to get restless. By this point it just the same old thing. She wanted to do something else with her life. Something worthwhile. Lucky for her, she had the perfect opportunity to do just that.

One day she heard from a passing group of tourists about they’d just been saved from a raging manticore by a Superhero. She listened carefully and soon knew the gist. At long last, she finally knew what she wanted to do. And she was in a perfect position to do it. Not only did she have her people’s magical powers of pipe-playing, but she herself had a special gift. Turns out that one of her ancestors was none other than Pan, and while she herself was no Demi-God, she was still blessed with strength of Godly proportions. With some real power backing her up, she went to America where Superheroes were thriving and did her best to become one herself. And eventually she succeeded. She stayed a Superhero for a good few decades, starting out just doing it for kicks but eventually growing to truly care about protecting people and making a difference. And she decided that the best way to make a difference wasn’t punching people around for funsies, but by instructing future generations to be the best heroes they could be. And perhaps also instill within them better reasons to be a hero than because they were bored. To that end she joined Saint Academy (now Saint University) as a teacher and one of their liasons with other species, and she’s been there ever since.

Jasmine is down to Earth, playful, and rambunctiousness, always looking to rile others up and have some fun, but she still knows when to get serious. (Which is something that took her a VERY long time to learn.) She can also be somewhat lazy and lax at times, but she always gets off her hairy ass eventually.

Jasmine enjoys fine music, fine wine, and fine men and women, not really caring much for intellectual pursuits or reading. She does enjoy action and adventure movies and raunchy comedies, and has a soft spot for Rom Coms.

Being a satyr, Jasmine can use her pan flute to produce a variety of effects. She can use it to influence people’s emotions, ranging anywhere from calming them to putting them to sleep to even enraging them. She can also use it to control nature, though not to the same extent as Evergreen or Flora. And as a descendant of Pan, she also has incredible strength.

SAINT UNIVERSITY STAFF PART 4

DOCTOR BOZO: Dr.Bozo (Real Name Billy Arkin,) is the world’s former foremost mage, but he wasn’t always such. Bozo grew up on the streets of early 20th century New York, a poor orphan struggling to get by. One fateful night, he was found by an old woman: Madam Vagrant, the previous master of the mystic arts and Defender of Earth. She took pity on him, seeing how much he was in need while also seeing the potential within. She took him in and trained him in the ways of the mystic arts as well as the world, preparing him to take her place as the new master of the mystic arts. By 1939, he was finally ready. That said, things didn’t go exactly as he hoped. With Saint leading the charge, most of the population mistook him as a Superhero rather than just a mage. Though he didn’t mind the publicity. If that’s what they thought of him as, who was he to correct them? In time he joined the Protectors, begrudgingly admitting that even the world’s Defender sometimes need. After that he continued defending the world from mystical threats, both with and without the Protectors.

Eventually he started training his own successor in the mystic arts, Dr.Hobo, and when he was old enough, he succeeded him as the Defender of Earth. But despite being over 90 years old, Bozo wasn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. Part of this was because his magic extended his life span. Even though he was pushing 90, he looked only half that, and easily had another 100 or so years in him. And yet, he was still getting a bit old for normal hero work. So with his successor taking the reigns, he decided to settle down at Saint Academy (now Saint University, becoming the school’s foremost teacher of the mystic arts and the world of magic that lurks in the shadows. Though he doesn’t have to be nice about it.

Bozo has two sides with the latter showing up more often than not. One is a delirious happy drunk, which is more of a mask that he puts on to make everyone underestimate him. But the other is that of a stern, taciturn mage, devoted to keeping the general order and willing to do whatever it takes to protect it. He is very strict, but is still understanding and willing to forgive mistakes as long they’re properly explained and whoever made the mistakes are willing to correct them and take responsibility. That said, he does have another kinder and sadder side, though it only tends to show up when appropriate.

Bozo spends most of his time studying his vast library of tombs and honing his craft, though he does enjoys speculative fantasy. He also enjoys fishing, though he rarely has the time for it.

Bozo is a master of the mystic arts and is able to do any number of things, though the way he fuels his power is rather unorthodox. Bozo’s power is fueled by booze. The more he drinks and the more inebriated he is, the stronger he is. Lucky for him, he is able to use his powers to retain his sense of clarity no matter how drunk he is, though the more alcohol he takes, the worse his hangover is in the morning. And if he’s somehow dexoticated, he’s powerless.

MR.CLEAN:Mr.Clean is SU's Janitor and looks exactly like you think he does; bald, middle-aged, and buff as hell with a warm, constant smile. He tried his hand at the Superhero games years back, but unfortunately, his powers just weren't very well suited for hero work. What they were suited for was janitorial work of the highest order, and he quickly became SU's most renowned janitor. Mr.Clean himself is all smiles and sunshine on the surface, but do NOT fuck with him. He has absolutely no fucks to give, but he never really gets all that angry or mad, oh no. Rather, he gets passive-aggressive as all hell. He's one of the most polite people you'll ever meet, but being polite doesn't necessarily have anything to do with being nice.

Mr.Clean's powers are self-explanatory. He can clean just about anything. All he has to do is create a thick layer of super-foam and it will instantly dissolve all dirt, grime, germs, and anything else they come in contact with. He also has minor telekinetic powers that allow him to lift small or light objects. He can't really do anything heavy duty, but it's perfect for serving as a makeshift vacuum or broom, along with perhaps a few other uses.

Mr.Clean enjoys sports, working out, light dramas, light comidies, rom coms, and the occasional action movie.

LAURIE:Laurie didn’t exactly have the best childhood. Her mother died in childbirth, leaving her father to raise all her alone. He was a decent man, but he just didn’t know how to properly raise a child. He was also often on edge and overly cautious, even before her mother died, and wasn’t one for fun and games. Because of that, Laurie’s childhood was rather oppressed. Her father rarely let her go out or do much of anything using any number of reasons as an excuse, and he made her do chores and take on various responsibilities and tasks as soon as she could. The end result was that she was very responsible, professional, and polite, but never really knew how to have fun or take it easy. Still, she did have a knack for getting into people’s heads and wound up getting into therapy. Of course, she eventually realized that she herself needed therapy and she should start taking care of her own issues before trying to become a therapist herself.

Eventually she managed to become a professional therapist and even got a job at Saint Academy (now Saint University), but while she has started addressing her own issues, she’s never quite managed to conquer them. While she knows she needs to get out more, she’s still more devoted to her job and assisting her patients than anything else. It’s not that big of a deal just yet, but if she doesn’t take greater pains to adress it, it could well bite her in the ass. (As of a matter of fact it did, though she's since been able to get herself back to where she used to be. Mostly.)

Laurie is cool, calm, collected, calm, caring, understanding, and very professional. However, she can also start to get flustered if pushed outside her comfort zone, and if she faces an obstacle that she cannot surmount, she can become somewhat strained.

Laurie doesn’t have many interests outside of psychology. She does occasionally watch light drama and romcoms and does a lot of reading, but she doesn’t really get out much.

Laurie is able to produce pheromones which are capable of affecting all sorts of different moods and emotions. She can make people feel sad, angry, nervous, happy, or just about anything else. This helps her in her therapy work in that it allows her to tap into certain emotions or feelings that might otherwise be hard for her patients to deal with, or make them confront certain parts of themselves they aren't always comfortable with bringing out. However, she also understands that using such powers can make people feel uncomfortable, so she always gives her patients a full disclosure before beginning her sessions.

SAINT UNIVERSITY STAFF PART 5

KILLDOZER:Killdozer (Real name Bryan Branford,) is the school's football coach. A former member of the Protectors, he was one of the group's strongmen back in the 80's, 90's, and early 00's before calling it quits. But before any of that he was a quarterback, so when he finally did settle down, he put both of his careers to good use and became Saint Academy's (now Saint University's) football coach. Killdozer is the epitome of Good Is Not Nice. He's rude, crude, and one mean SOB. He was also best friends with fellow Protector Drill Sergeant Nasty, which tells you all you need to know. That said, he does have his students' best interests at heart and does care about helping people, and can show show a softer more sentimental side. He just doesn't always do a good job of showing it. He enjoys sports, workouts, going to bars, action movies, thrillers, and raunchy comedies.

Killdozer is incredibly strong and durable, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. He also has a suit of Powered Armor made by Armada that strengthens his powers while also giving him other bells and whistels. He has jet propulsers on his feet that let him fly, but he also has a couple of giant bulldozer claws covering his hands that can also fire laser beams or shoot out hard light missiles. He can also whip out a couple of tractor wheels that let him steamroll anything in his path. Of course, he doesn't use the armor during football practice, but even without it, he's still a force to be reckoned with.

GILGAMESH: The mythological hero reborn. A mighty hero in his time, Gilgamesh eventually faced the cold hand of death despite having done everything in his power to vanquish it. However, Enki, god of water and wisdom, decided that in this new age of heroes, the world needed a reminder of the best of the heroism of old to balance out that of the new. To that end, he resurrected Gilgamesh, though not without some... alterations.

As it turns out, Gilgamesh had to be reborn in a human host, and Enki didn't have any real say in who that host would be. And that new host just turned out to be a woman. In any case, having come to terms with her newfound womenhood and lease on life, Gligamesh has since vowed to be a mighty hero on today's terms while still holding onto the best aspects of the past, and is one of the Protector's most fearsome members. She possesses great strength and invulnerability as well as extended longevity, though as she knows all too well, death eventually comes for all. Perhaps it was thinking about that one time too many in her current incarnation that caused her to leave the Protectors and take some time off to think about what her place in the world should truly be. Not that she’s resting on her laurels. As it turns out, she’s still an expert combatant and also has a deep love of history, and so she joined Saint Academy (now Saint University) as a history teacher while she sorts herself out.

Gilgamesh enjoys fighting, drinking, action movies, and raunchy comedies. She also has a deep love for history, especially for that of or before her original incarnation.

KILLGORE: Killgore is a demon, but he was not born in the Abyss. Instead he was born to a couple of demons on Earth who had decided to immigrate there after deciding they didn’t want their son to live in a hellhole or be a monster. Killgore instead was instilled with Earth values, though his parents did teach him about their culture and the Abyss. He even visited it himself, though he was horrified at what he saw. Still, Killgore was determined to change this. He decided to become a Hero to prove that not all demons are monsters and that they can be heroes, and to one day go to the Abyss and try and change things for the better. Because he can’t let what he saw stand. In the meantime, he’s content with his lot in life, first being a hero and then becoming a teacher at SA after he decided he wanted a change of pace, and also does his best to promote non-human cultures and values and positive representation. At first he was the homeroom teacher of Class 1, but Saint's death he has stepped up take his place as the Dean of Saint University. He isn't sure he's the best one for the job, but he's still giving it his all.

Killgore is very cheerful, upbeat, and friendly, but is also something of a large ham. He has a habit of throwing himself into just about everything and is always full of vim and vigor and spirit, to the point where it can be infectious. That said, he still knows when to get serious, and can be frightening if provoked. He also does not tolerate racism or bullying, and holds everyone to high standards. Underneath that though, he’s something of a big softie.

Killgore enjoys light dramas, light comedies, campy action films, and is a surprisingly talented cook.

Being a demon, Killgore has all the standard abilities: Strength, durability, flight via wings, and teleportation. That said, he’s still stronger than most if a bit slower, and can also breath fire if he’s so inclined.

AMADEA: Amadea is Mikael’s mother. She was born into the Freisch household, a family of hunters and trackers. However, she never really cared for that life, especially since her father (also Mikael’s Grandpa) was something of an asshole. He wasn’t that bad at first, but after her mother died, he became ever harsher and abusive, drowning his sorrows in the bottle. And after living with him for so long, and trying and failing to strike out on her own, she just couldn’t take it.

She was nearly ready to end it all when she was visited one lonely winter’s night by a charming, mysterious stranger who fancied her. And she in turn fancied him. After so many years of hopelessness, he gave her reason for being. And he was taken in by her sheer beauty and presence. It wasn’t long before they consummated their relationship and gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, Mikael. But as happy as she was, it wouldn’t last. The man soon revealed his true form to her: Zamael, one of the lords of the Abyss. He had long had a habit of taking mortal lovers and giving birth to a legion of offspring, partly because halfbreeds were often stronger than pure demons and also because human females were more fanciful to him than demons. (Though he didn’t mind if they became demons after the fact.)

In any case, Zamael still had his responsibilities back in the Abyss, and wasn’t willing to abandon them just like that. And so he gave Amadea a choice: If she wanted, he could use his magic to turn her into an immortal demon like himself so she could live with him forever in the Abyss. As it so happened, Amadea truly loved Zamael, and so she accepted. But she couldn’t bring herself to take Mikael with her. She knew the Abyss would surely be hell for anyone who wasn’t prepared for it, and she couldn’t bear to raise him in such a place. Of course, she didn’t want to leave him with her asshole father either, but she didn’t know who else to leave him with. With no other options, she left him in her father’s care, though she didn’t tell him just why she left or whom she had left with. In fact, she left while he was dead asleep. And by the time he woke up, she was gone. With Mikael sound asleep in his crib.

Years later, after Mikael had awoken to his true nature and became ready for the hells that awaited him in the Abyss, Amadea returned to him, now a demon herself thanks to Zamael. She offered to let him come live with her when he was ready so that she could finally get to know her son. As of now he has yet to take her up on it, but he still visits her from time to time.

Amadea is polite, affable, fun-loving, and refined. However, while it rarely shows, she also has a nasty side that pops up when provoked. When it does, she can be vindictive, callous, and even spiteful, but she tries to be above such things. She also still resents her father and holds some sadness over what she went through, but becoming a demon has made it easier to deal with.

Amadea has most of the usual powers of a demon; strength, teleportation, and fire breathing. She can’t fly, but she makes up for that by being able to swim through lava, and she can control it as well.

As a human, she enjoyed drama’s, light comedies, and drinking herself silly, but living in the Abyss means she’s largely had to give those up.

JACOB: Jacob Mc Carthy was raised in an incredibly devout household, as well as a generally religious environment. He grew up in a small town largely closed off from the rest of the world, it was backward in a number of ways. And yet, when it came to the ways of the Lord, they tended to stick closer to the intended meaning than many fire and brimstone teachers these days. Still, in spite of his religious upbringing, Jacob eventually decided that path wasn’t for him, instead deciding to become a mathematician and teacher. He soon moved to Albuquerque when a rather well paying position opened up and eventually made a life for himself, even gaining a wife and daughter.

However, they were both killed during the Sister Incident, leaving Jacob alone. He tried to move on, taking the Lord’s teachings of forgiveness and acceptance to heart. Though it wasn’t easy. He eventually moved to Super City to try and start over and leave his past behind. Which eventually led him to Saint Academy. Jacob may not have been a Superhero or even a metahuman, but every school needed a mathteacher, and Jacob just so happened to be one of the best around. Nevermind that in today’s political climate, having a human teacher on an otherwise Superhuman campus did wonders for PR.

Jacob is the epitome of Nice Guy. He’s calm, collected, understanding, and very friendly. That said, he’s still occasionally reminded of the death of his family, and when he is, a different side is drawn out; sad, remorseful, and perhaps even a bit cold. But he still does his best to keep on trucking in spite of it all.

Jacob has no particular skills or abilities to speak of, though he is an amazing mathematician and is even a bit of a mechanical wizard. Although he is by no means on the level of someone like Reinbach.

Jacob enjoys heavy dramas and light comedies, as well as film noir. He also likes to read up on the latest advances in mathematics, for obvious reasons.

The Yōkai Realm

The plane of existence that exclusively houses the Yōkai—Japanese spirits that are formed by the manifestation of magic and consciousness in objects and animals over a long period of time.note

The residents of the Yōkai Realm are numerous, including the tanuki (raccoon dog spirits), kitsune (fox spirits), kappa (turtlelike spirits), and bakeneko/nekomata (cat spirits)—just to name a few. Several kami (gods) have also been reported to appear as well; such as Tsukiyomi, Susano'o, and Inari Ōkami.

The realm itself can only be entered and exited by a resident Yōkai via the usage of multiple torii scattered around the world—the most notable one being in the sacred forest of Tadasu no Mori—however anything or anyone in direct physical contact with a Yōkai during the travelling process can obtain passage into the realm. Exiting also requires contact with a Yōkai in the process of transportation—however once one full trip has been made one is considered to be 'enlightened' and thus is able to travel through the torii freely. To counter this, the Yōkai Realm also has multiple gatekeepers in the form of the ogre-like oni; who exile both mortal trespassers and especially disruptive Yōkai. It isn't uncommon for these gatekeepers to issue tests and challenges for visiting mortals to overcome in order to obtain passage—granted only if they are not being escorted by a respected yōkai already.

The main appearance of the realm itself is like that of an eerie, darkened forest, with the hovels and homes of the yōkai scattered about sporadically; including the kodama (tree spirits) who infest the forest trees like ants. There are occasional clearings and groves that have actual villages and towns—built in traditional ancient Japanese style—but these are few and far between. The society of the yōkai in general seems to be rather territorial and alienated from one another, usually resulting in distrust between different species of yōkai. However, the aforementioned civilisations seem to be growing in popularity, and the opportunity for the yōkai to live their afterlives in a manner akin to how they used to is an attractive prospect for even the most unruly of the spirits. Even if their mimicries of 'civilisation' are naturally a little odd...

SAINT FOUNDATION AND SAINT SOLUTIONS

Just a quick entry for posterity. The Saint Foundation and Saint Solutions (both founded by Saint himself,) are two sides of the same coin. The Saint Foundation primarily employs Superheroes the world over and gives them a place where they can be paid for their profession, and also funds the Protectors. Whereas Saint Solutions covers the more mundane side of things, being largely responsible for funding Saint Academy and it's offshoots as well as providing a host of helpful and utilitarian services. Aside from everything else Saint has done, it's just part of his lasting legacy.

The House Mattiuza

    open/close all folders

     In General
The Mattiuzas are not pure hearts who converted a fiend by any stretch. Self-indulgent, heretical, and much preferring to bend the world to their whims, the House Mattiuza has been a source of maelstroms and malady and charity and blessings from its very beginning. It took a significant amount of evil to summon a daeva and inventiveness to strive as they had after all.

That said, the House Mattiuza has no world shattering ambition nor are they even are particularly interested in enriching themselves. They're wild cards, out to take from the world what they wished and give back in their own way.
Tropes in Common
  • Anti-Magic: Shirin and Vaumisa have note divine protection after all.
  • Biological Immortality: Both Shirin and Vaumisa have ageless, supernaturally healthy bodies, but are still quite capable of bleeding out from a fatal wound—or starving.
  • The Dark Arts: Helped uncover and record encyclopedias for much of modern magery and magitek (along with mundane science).
  • Evil Hero: They defend their home and beautify it and keep the roads clear for free travel, and if they can reduce casualties by poisoning every nation downstream of them, well...
  • The Family That Slays Together: As soon as they 'adopted' Mahvash, she took part in the family business.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: By way of Mahvash
  • Morality Chain: The normally self-absorbed bunch are all this to each other. They'd never participate in a scheme that could endanger one of them (more than usual anyway). They're usually vipers to anyone else though... The main exception being people who took care of Mahvash.
  • Noble Demon: The House Mattiuza has a going thing with Mahvash and other daeva, not out of malice toward humanity or the world, but because it satisfies them. When not on the clock, they're happy to engage in steady acts of charity and kindness. They consider themselves on a permanent mission, converting for the cause and studying scripts and doctrine with more zeal than Mahvash herself has and for the same reasons as any other missionary.
  • Our Phlebotinum Child: Sort of adopted. Sort of invited to cover their house. Its complex.
  • The Sacred Darkness: Have this attitude.
  • Sense Freak: Love experiences of all kinds, and want others to have them too.
  • These Are Things Man Was Not Meant to Know: Shirin and Vaumisa have been shamelessly transcribing and presenting these bits of knowledge for public consumption for years. After the 'brief' outbreak of madness, decay, and disaster, these things often just become knowledge. This is vindication enough for them.
  • Villainous Underdog: The Mattiuza used to wander about in Bronze Age 'Iran' with the vast armies of the king, raiding Akkadians and Scythians, and Sword and Sandal heroes all eager for their heads—and Mahvash's presence did not tip the scale that much in those days.
  • Villainous Valour: Get through thick and thin by The Power of Love, and the determination to see each through.
  • Unholy Matrimony: Shirin and Vaumisa are in it together. They never even consider betraying each other.

    Shirin Bet Mattiuza
The matriarch of the House Mattiuza note , Shirin shows herself vivacious and curious, to the point that people wonder if she's ill if they catch her willingly sitting down. Even her falling asleep tends involve her passing out mid-activity after several days awake.

Despite her mania though, Shirin is no De Terminator. She'd rather fold them and move on to something else that's fun. Many, MANY people not named Vaumisa or Mahvash have found themselves left to face the swords and spears when she vanishes on them.

All the same, Shirin usually charms the people she meets, having genuine interest in everyone's lives—even those she's just about to use as bait. In her own home, she's rather a softie, going out of her way to indulge her housemates and keep the house warm and pleasantly chaotic. (Orderly is impossible).

     Vaumisa Bet Mattiuza
The patriarch of the House Mattiuza note , Vaumisa shows himself equally as manic as Shirin, although he usually remembers social customs. He usually comes up with The Plan of the week note  when the house isn't all off causing individual ruckuses.

Even more than Shirin, he will be no where near the action if at all possible, and while clearly caring for Mahvash's well-being, he is remarkably cavalier about sending her into extreme danger.

At home, he's solid and reliable, keeping up the House Mattiuza's connections in society and usually following through on his promises. note

In any case, Vaumisa is rather stuffy and always dressed up, no matter what. (Mahvash will swear she's seen him climb out of bed in a crisp three-piece suit. Shirin would say that he's entered bed the same way). He can be distant with his love of the family (and even moreso for friends), but he is also the most likely to empathize with people he inevitably harms and to try to justify his actions.

Mahvash's Wayward Siblings—The Other Daeva

     Daeva in General
The daeva are indeed a tribe/clan/association of eldritch things whom the ancients never distinguished from gods. Sometimes they act the part, defending adopted beings from otherworldly threats. Often they spend their time dooming entire populations to lives of suffering and frustration and ultimately lengthy deaths... before continuing on with the souls. They're as much varied in their passions as any selection of beings; though those among that are not yet sapient do skew towards evil... And they're as varied in their forms as their imaginations permit to the point that nothing can be considered their true form.

Daeva are indifferent to most drives, not feeding off of prayers, crops or meat, or even pain and suffering. Nor do they reproduce sexually. They just kind of appear; though they appear in the aftermath of disaster and decay often enough that the ancients thought said decay and disaster spawned them.

They do enjoy and their whims and catering to both could mean impressing a friend by driving strategically placed people mad and watching them lead entire regions and populations to ruin. The same whims could just as easily lead to them guiding travelers safely through the desert or the Abyss or serving as muses for new ideas and inventions.

In ancient days, the daeva tended to congregate in the Iranian plateau, and, alongside the yazata and other deities native to the region, aided in construction, taught command of magic and other arts and sciences, constructed magitek, and, with particular enthusiasm killed or drove off demons and malicious entities. They had and have a culture that celebrates 'poetic' destruction and despoiling of things and exploration. These tendencies helped push Achaemenid Iran to its old grandeur. But those were the old days...

In modern times, they, through Ahriman, are technically in conflict with the yazata, but between their usual indifference to that kind of thing and the casus belli being long-gone, this is a concern of very few of them. Nonetheless, Ahriman has been the daeva's one and only chief since time immemorial, and his writ is one of the very few things that can make them act collectively. Or really make them do anything.

Tropes
  • Above Good and Evil: So, they might say. Most are happy to admit that they have no idea what those are, and further that they do not care.
  • Biological Immortality: Long-lived but much easier to permanently kill than yazatas or humans. They cannot be healed by White Magic nor can they be resurrected, partly because they're retgonned when they die. note  Mahvash interprets this as either her soul and body being inseparable/the same or not having a soul.
  • Our Gods Are Greater: The daeva are gods, and, as such, needless, powerful, and capable of causing great disasters on a whim. note
  • The Sacred Darkness: Averted. Mattiuzas aside, the daeva are, as a whole, hardly interested in spreading "good" words or developing a following. Whatever cults they gain are accidental.

     Duzakh - Realm of Ahriman
As noted Duzakh is the realm of Ahriman, not of the daeva. One won't find the majority of them there, but it is where one may find the largest gathering of them.

The old realm and "center" note is an endless desert, baked by an everlasting noonday heat—and no Sun. Even lesser daeva suffer there. Not that there isn't life. Colossal, feral beasts, roving spirits who've managed to tough it out, and lost prisoners from otherworldly conquests are just some of the 'wildlife'. In any case, one needs a guide. A 'straight' walk is not straight ahead in that place. An unwary traveler may take a step in and out and find himself 1000 years and 100 parsecs from his starting position or spend centuries lost in the place only to return to his fellows, minutes later. And be looking at 'himself' back with his fellows in the past.

A good guide can lead a traveler true, including to one of the entrances "below". Naturally, the blinding light and broiling heat instantly switches to an unbreakable pitch black and a chill that seeps through to the soul. Physical senses fail quickly as one's own voice becomes indistinguishable from mental echoes in the nothing, the 'pitch' begins to feel the same everywhere. At least one no longer smells decay... or anything. The sensory deprivation quickly leaves travelers alone even if they're (theoretically) in a large group. A traveler's deadened and confused senses would not be able to discern between progress and bumping into walls or even her companions.

All that said, while this is the most travelers may see, the inhabitants are the same ones who helped drive magic and magitek innovations. There is a city there. Sorta. One should not search for a cluster of buildings given the way directions work in the place.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives

Dementius

Dementius is a sorcerer (one of the most powerful ones) born in the Abyss. He is a skilled user of dark magic (soul manipulation, empowering, etc.). His humanoid-form resembles a tall and lanky anthropomorphic dark purple spider with three pairs of arms (that he can fuse into just one pair) and eight eyes (his main, bigger pair of eyes are his normal eyes, while his other, smaller eyes can see the souls of others, magic energy, and life energy. With those eyes he can figure out where people are if he keeps track of their life/magic energy). Four horns adorn his head, looking like a mane or a crown. His eyes are red with black sclerae. He wears a purple and black costume, with gold decorations, similiar to a jester outfit. He also has summonable wings, that are black and tendrill-like. His spider form looks like his humanoid form, just bigger, naked, and not anthropomorhic. Dementius was, at first, a really respected demon in the Abyss, but at a certain point in time, for some reason, unknown to others, descended into madness and insanity, and started wrecking havoc on Earth. His most notable attack was the Venice incident on the 21st February of 2009. He had eaten the souls of many civilians, and sealed the soul of Raffaello Precossini in the Wonder Masquerade Mask, one of his greatest masks. However, the City Priest's banishment magic really damaged him, forcing him to hybernate. Right now, he's having occasional telepathic conversations with Dante. But one day, he will awaken, and wreck havoc on the world once again.

Raffaello Precossini

Raffaello Precossini, better known by the stage name of Carnival King, is an upper-class mask crafter and costume designer that became a notable celebrity in the European mainstream in 2003, when he started showing off his skills to the public with his son. Nothing is known about his early life and his pre-celebrity life, but the illustrious Raffaello said something when asked about it and summed it up in an ambiguous sentence: Well, I was hopeless for a lot of time, but then, my dearest Minerva changed everything.

Raffaello is a tall man with a surprising Heroic Build. He is bald (but he hides his bald head in his kingly red and golden crown), he got a well-groomed beard that is grayish-white. He got teal-colored eyes.

He wears a white tank top, along with a red (long-sleeved) vest with golden decorations. He wears blue pants with golden decorations. He wears kingly boots that are black, white and golden. His belt is golden. He wears a golden collar, similiar to the ones worn by pharaohs. From it, starts a red cape wit golden decorations. In general, his outfit gives off an extremely kingly vibe.

Thanks to Dementius, his soul got sealed and his body preserved in a glass coffin with golden decorations. The City Priest enchanted it so that his body would never rot. But during Parents' Night, Mahvash Mattiuza relocated his soul into a spider plush that was made by Felicity Sheperd. Right now, he is his son's companion.

Acker Family

Professor Donovan Acker
Prof. Donovan Acker is a lesser known professor but, he is okay with this. He is his mid forties and his looks have faded to the point where you would be surprised his kids are his. He used to be more involved the main fields of science as a team with his wife and the mother of his children, Carol. However, as the years went by, tensions with his fellow scientists grew. After Carol's death, he left the guild he was part of and moved to the sea to get a change of pace and be closer to his children. He became interested in different dimensions despite the fear against it. However, after the day that Finn got his powers, he scaled back experiments like that. Donovan is kind yet, stern man. He loves Finn and Celia dearly but, can be rather overprotective especially after what happened that one day given he is scared of losing his son for good.

Celia Acker
Celia is Finn's younger sister by five years. She is cute and sweet young girl but, is kind of a fragile flower and is rather shy. She looks up to Finn greatly and supports him. It also goes both ways since Finn feels the same way towards her. She also takes care of the house and cooks the best omelets. While she is concerned for Finn it's less than their father's because she thinks Finn can handle it.

Carol Acker
Donovan's wife and Finn and Celia's mother. She was a well known scientist along with her husband. They actually met and bonded over a project they were assigned on. Carol was a kind and fun loving brash woman. She unfortunately came down with a terminal disease. Despite the best efforts to cure it, she ultimately passed away when Finn was eleven and Celia was six. She ultimately asked Donovan to do what he could for their children as her last wish. Each family member has a memento of her. Donovan has her glasses he wears on his coat, Celia has her necklace and Finn has her duffel bag. Her family still holds he in high regard.

  • Real Name: Nightingale Shepherd
  • Superhero Name: N/A
  • Gender: Female
  • Age: 44
  • Appearance: Contrasting greatly from her daughter, Nightingale stands a bit taller than average at 5'11" - by no means statuesque, but enough to potentially overshadow would be suitors. Miss Shepherd has long, lustrous black hair which she keeps straight though depending on the occasion she may roll it up into a bun for convenience's sake. She has dark, dark brown eyes and well defined, slender features and is often seen wearing the same mischievous smile her daughter Felicity sometimes sports.
  • Personality: Miss Nightingale Shepherd is nothing if not caring - though not as active in the community as her daughter, she's always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need and is the sort to check in if something's troubling you. She can be playful, teasing, and even a bit flirty, though she knows well enough not to overdo it. Despite her happy demeanor though Nightingale is surprisingly intelligent and astute if you give her the chance to show it - after all, she was a former engineer and is currently a successful business owner. She does her best not to let it go to her head.
    • Likes: Sewing, stitching, costume design, plushie design, soft and fuzzy animals, cute things in general, and determining mundane utilities to the latest in technological innovation. Enjoys watching the science channel and documentaries.
    • Dislikes: Nightingale does her best to like everyone or give them the benefit of the doubt but it is "deliberate" or "inconsiderate evil" that crosses the line for her. Also air horns. Those are loud and annoying.
  • Abilities: Nightingale calls herself a former engineer when pressed but it's hard to say that's really the case, especially when she is the one who outfits her daughter's costumes with protective, lightweight material and is always looking to improve its functionality. She keeps up with the latest inventions and does her best to analyze them and consider potential uses which she tries to incorporate within the work. Aside from this she is great at sewing, stitching, crocheting, the works and loves costume design. As a local business owner, she also has a reasonable grasp of budgeting and financing, as well as managerial skills to keep said local business running smoothly.
  • Gear: You know, the usual. Purse, wallet, a few basic first aid items in the car, an SOS flare gun. The usual.
  • Biography: A bright and young engineer eager to put her ideas forth into the world, a 22 year old Nightingale Shepherd landed a job for a certain growing and innovative tech company in the heart of Silicon Valley right after graduating college with high marks. She enjoyed her career for 4-5 years but learned (through rumor and her own research) that the company was receiving funding from private military contractors and the U.S. military and the tech she had devoted those past few years on would aid projects meant to destabilize already politically fragile countries. Nightingale protested using the products of her hard work and dedication to contribute to the death of hundreds if not thousands of people but upper management turned a deaf ear to her. So, along with other engineers with their consciences weighing heavy on them, Nightingale blew the whistle on the company. Unfortunately this led to their blacklisting within the tech industry but the damage to the company's reputation had been done and Miss Shepherd was somewhat jaded on the prospect anyhow. Resigning from the tech sector and moving to Super City, Nightingale sought a fresh start. She built up her business, Fluff N Stuff Plushie Emporium, from the ground up with help from the local community and her friends also formerly from the tech industry and eventually gave birth to a certain Felicity Shepherd, whom she would spoil and raise with all the love and compassion her heart could muster.
  • Misc.: Oddly single.

The Order of the Well

The Order of the Well is a laughably small cult for a laughably small demonic presence, at the very least when compared to Dementius, Shirin and Zamael. The one thing the Order of the Well does have in their ambition to their cause.

The root of their religion comes from the rather unknown creature known as Atravilis, a god-like figure (to them anyway) stated to have "in the vast tapestry of the world, used the very vile blood in his veins to paint the evil in the blank spaces" or something to that effect. Given that there's little to no information about Atravilis, at most being a quick name drop in some of the books themselves, he doesn't seem to be the worldly presence the Order assumes him to be.

That is, however, not to say his power isn't impressive, just in comparison to others, it doesn't match up.

The sacrifice must be pure of heart and free of sin (Whatever the hell that means, the order usually goes for children of under 10 for such deciding), and the child must be willingly given up by someone of their blood line.

The act of SUMMONING Astravilis is different from one would expect, at least compared to other forms of media covering Demonic Possession. Rather than the demon being placed into the person itself, a Lure is. The Mark of Ink, a horribly knotted tattoo of some variety is given to them as a way of telling Atravilis that a new host is capable.

The Order of the Well is usually small enough that they don't have a lot of competition from other bands to have their Chosen be the one.

Atravilis doesn't immediately possess the marked, but rather allows his demonic energy to slowly corrupt the child through an extended time period. Too much demonic energy in one person, being forced that amount, will ultimately kill the child, thus, they are forced the energy in small increments.

There are signs for the progression of how Atravilis' possession is going.

  • The Spreading of his Grasp (The mark begins to slowly stretch out onto his body, like tendrils, usually within 10 minutes of the ritual completion.)
  • The Loss of Sound (The first act of "claiming" involves the possessed losing the ability to speak, or even make outward noises)
  • His grasp is true. (The blood of the person is replaced by ink. While not painful, it is quite disconcerting)
  • The Loss of Sense. (The possessed is quick to lose his senses as Atravilis begins to truly take hold of the body, rendering the other senses of Sight, Smell, Hearing, Taste and even touch inert)
  • The Loss of Soul (The ripping of one soul from their body in order to allow Atravilis his ultimate ascension, leading to an emotionally dead husk of a human being, incapable of feeling until Atravilis decides to take his position.)
  • The Loss of Self. (...?)

The time needed between these ultimately vary between people, from days, months, or in Zach's case, a record breaking 12 Years. He assumes it's just his optimism that keeps the spread from going that extensively, and that quickly. Regardless, once the Spreading of his Grasp has taken hold, Atravilis does allow the use of his powers for his chosen, as a way of protecting themselves from such events during the "incubation process".

There's a reason that Atravilis hasn't actually made it to this realm yet, at least in this way. Likely because any one who has reached the Loss of Sense ultimately chooses to kill themselves before it goes any further, driven to such despairs that it's ultimately a wiser decision.

However, given that Demons are so outwardly capable of walking amongst the populace, and even having families in the human realm, it's strange that a cult would require human sacrifice to even bring it in. Several people (At the least, the ones who bother to even know about) speculate it's mostly out of blind sadism, that he chooses to hurt someone just to be born.

But then again, Atravilis is far down the list of demonic entities, it could be the equivalent of some edgelord who still believes he needs the Blood of a Goat in order to be summoned. He could be a big blowhard like that, especially in a world of Capes like this.

Notable Denizens of the Yōkai Realm

  • Hohoemi: A nekomata who has gained a similar infamy and uneasy reputation equivalent to that of the Cheshire Cat amidst the Yōkai. Sadistic and more than a little unhinged, this shamisen-playing-feline is a man-eater and a regular necromancer, usually seen blabbering to himself nonsensically or attempting to woo any vaguely-feminine figure in his path to varying success. An arguably more powerful shapeshifter than even the kitsune, Hohoemi is perhaps one of the more dangerous natives in Ikai—however his insanity and questionable intelligence means he is rarely that much of a threat. Still, one has to watch their words around this mangy monster cat; lest they get a face full of foxfire for their troubles.
  • Yūben'na: A lone kamaitachi who has almost never been seen sober. A troublemaker and repeat-offender to boot mainly due to his drunken wailing and vindictiveness, Yūben has been the butt of many of Yoko's jokes before and thus has developed a resentment for the fox—something the latter is deeply regretting yet is regularly finding herself helpless to convince the mustelid that she means him no ill-will. Blessed with a speed of the strongest gale-force winds and armed to the teeth with sickles, Yūben's true crisis is his loneliness—his abrasive nature even when in his right mind meaning he is lacking the usual squadron that other kamaitachi usually travel in and work with. He is currently declared as a lost cause by the ōni, however some certain individuals still hold onto hope for his reformation. On the bright side, he has made a regular habit of challenging Yoko to duels—events that seem to at least combat his misery and provide him with a bit of excitement. Something that Yoko is all too happy to do for him, even if she usually ends up injured in the aftermath.
  • Atsuko: An (ex) prostitute spirit of a shy and friendly nature. Apparently killed by one of her... customers, Atsuko has been reformed in multiple ways—physically into a being of pure, prehensile hair, and mentally able to start anew in the bizarre homeworld of her fellow Yōkai. Now working in a flower shop, Atsuko's reputation has slowly been transformed into that of the local sweetheart—and is even rumoured to be developing feelings for one of her store regulars.
  • Mari: A local jorōgumo who resides in the caverns outside of the primary Yōkai settlements. Previously a man-eater who put on the guise of a beautiful female to lure in her prey, Mari now acts as a sort of wise woman for the benefit of those interested; opening up her dwelling to visitors and providing counsel for whatever issues they may have. Goodhearted overall—which is a rare trait amongst yōkai—Mari has been facing trouble in trying to raise her multitude of offspring; as due to her open door policy she has been made more vulnerable to attack by the more disruptive of inhabitants in the realm. Still, her stubbornness and determination is to be admired—and any nuisances to her children are swiftly reminded as to her previous reputation of a vicious bloodsucker. Mari is considered wise enough by the local community for her to even have regular input in important decisions for the entirety of the realm.
  • Hogo: An ōni who guards the northernmost torii of the Yōkai Realm's main settlement. An interesting exception to the bulky and mentally lacking of his counterparts, this demonic ogre is widely respected as the local sheriff of the small village he resides in, and his diligence in watching over his designated gate is to be admired. Serious almost to a fault, Hogo is the one who regularly has to fight through headache after headache to keep out or keep in disruptive influences—effectively having to simultaneously juggle the wellbeing of Ikai and the wellbeing of Earth in his clawed hands. Though keeping a watchful eye on all wrongdoers (which basically accounts for a solid 97% of the entire Yōkai population), he is notably more tolerant of ones such as Yoko and Hohoemi—if only because the former has had a recent change of behaviour and the latter is usually too pathetic to be considered a genuine threat most of the time. Yoko perceives Hogo as a friend and an uncle figure, while Hogo perceives Yoko as a pain in the neck and a regular source of fatigue. Nonetheless, the kitsune has managed to convince Hogo to (reluctantly) act as a referee for her and Hohoemi's fights.

Alice Hirschbaum

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Zach gets his sunny disposition and burning optimism from his mother. The epitome of "bubbly" and "loving", Alice is friends to nearly everyone she meets and rarely an enemy to anyone. Her passions include baking and cooking, sewing and watching her stories. When her husband got put on disability leave, she took it upon herself to work as many jobs as she could to provide for her family, including, at the moment, a Cashier at the local grocery store, a receptionist at a salon and a baker at the bakery.

Robert Hirschbaum

If there was anyone more opposite of Alice, it's Robert. The epitome of Southern Trash, he once upon a time was a firefighter that got hurt and was put on disability leave. Rather than use this time to get better and spend time with his family, he instead chose to use this time to get drunk during half the day, and spend the rest of the day viciously beating his wife and son. He had a wicked hatred for the Super Hero community, deciding that that would be what's causing all of his strife on his family: The Superheroes taking jobs from hardworking people like him. Finally, in a moment of utter abhorrence, justifying that "without the little fucking brat, we wouldn't be struggling for money" (the irony long since lost to him), he sold his own eight year old son to the Order of the Well for some quick money and well, the rest is history.

I don't know why I spent so long typing this since it'll probably never be relevant, but whatever. Worldbuilding, ho!

The Lords of Hell

  • There are thirteen Elder Demons which bear the title 'Lord of Hell'. They are the mightest of all denizens of the Abyss, who rule all beneath them with iron fists. Rarely do they reveal themselves to humans, or even enter the human world, usually using disguises when they do have business. Being demons, they are cunning and cruel, manipulating people to their own ends, but none of them could be said to be truly irreedemable.
  • Many of them share names with ancient human myths, but it is unknown if the myth came about because of them, or if they somehow were formed from the myth.
  • The seven highest Lords are known as the Seven Princes of Hell. The other Lords are referred to as the Lesser Six.

Seven Princes

  • Lucifer: Lord of Pride. The fallen one, once an angel of the Abyss's counterpart dimension, the Aether. Called the King of Hell, and the mightest of the Lords, who rules over all the Abyss. His domain is Light, which he bends to his will. He shimmers, glowing, impossibly beautiful. Yet his once-angellic wings are forever stained black for his treachery.
  • Mammon: Lord of Greed. A golden demon who holds more riches than a hundred earths. Like the touch of Midas, he creates endless wealth, which he hordes to himself. A very solitary Lord, who does not much deal with mortals directly. Those few humans who catch his ear are the likes of bankers and brokers, dealers of wealth who can offer him investments.
  • Asmodeus: Lord of Lust. A shapeshifter, usually female though sometimes male, always taking a form of great beauty. The least dangerous of the Seven Princes, as she prefers making love, not war, and thus has the lowest proclivity for violence.
  • Leviathan: Lord of Envy. A monstrous serpent of enormous size, said to be long enough to encircle the earth. His body slumbers halfway between the Abyss and the sister-realm the Deep, to which he acts as an ambasaddor. Most of his dealings are naturally done via an avatar, rather than his real form.
  • Baal: Lord of Gluttony. Known also as Ba'al Zebub or Beelzebub, the Lord of Flies. A great, portly creature with a bottomless appetite. All vermin and insects answer to him, and he can call swarms and plagues at will.
  • Satan: Lord of Wrath. Known also as the Devil, the red-skinned, pitchfork wielding creature that many would associate with evil itself. Despite this, he actually is quite empathetic to others, growing angry when people, demon or otherwise, are wrongfully mistreated, and demanding aggressors be appropriately punished. Also gets extremely annoyed when people confuse him with Lucifer. His fire is the mightiest of all flame-wielding demons, for no rage burns hotter that his.
  • Belphegor: Lord of Sloth. Constantly seen sitting in a high-tech hover chair, he provides people with great insight and intelligence, in the hopes they'll invent new technology for him to have fun with. One of the most human-obssesed Lords, frequently popping over to Earth to grab the latest tech.

Lesser Six

  • Zamiel: Lord of Hunts. Master of all predators, and baron of the Black Forest. The father of Mikael Freisch. Has a fascination with human women, and takes many as his wives. Has the most children of any of the Lords.
  • Azazel: Lord of Souls. Another angel, who fell with Lucifer. Unlike Lucifer, he doesn't desire power, instead being content with harvesting the souls of the damned. His powers of soul manipulation are unmatched.
  • Mephistopheles: Lord of Deals. The tempter, who offers mortals their greatest desires, outwardly making him seem the most amicable of the Lords. But in the end, there is always a price for those who bargain with him. Works closely with Goetia and Bapho, as many deals require summoning and sacrifices. Frequently steals from Mammon to pay his end of bargains, much to the Lord of Greed's chagrin.
  • Ars Goetia: Lord of Summons. Manages the summoning rituals for all demons of the Abyss. As interdimensional transit has since become easier, he feels a bit under-appreciated. Works closely with Mephisto and Baphomet, the former to make summoning deals, the latter to collect sacrifices to fulfill the summoning contracts.
  • Baphomet: Lord of Sacrifices. Draws power from any sacrifice made in his name, though as demons more casually mingle with humans, the flow has dried up somewhat. Nowadays he mostly places poker with his buddies, Mephistopheles and Goetia.
  • Legion: Lord of Armies. The lowliest of the Lords is a gestalt of ten thousand demons' souls, fused together in a single twisted form. Can manifest ten thousand bodies to do battle, but rarely does. Oddly, rather than the bloodlust of ten thousand demons, Legion has the bloodlust of one divided ten thousand times, which combined with their hive-mind intelligence, makes them quite well adjusted compared to the other Lords.

What is so amusing about this? Why do you take lives? How can you forget?

The Extra-Dimensional Beast
Far away in a dimension unknown to man, there is a race of rather peculiar beasts. They appear similar to slugs but, have longer necks with their slug body below. They have black spheres for eyes. They have no teeth forcing them to swallow any prey they come across. They are rather big and are definitely taller than most humans. Finally, their coloration is like a kaleidoscope. Their body breathes in the air around them into every part of them. If they are lost in an another dimension, they can rip a temporary hole back. They can also telepathically speak to other beings if they want to. They are beings of immense energy and can transfer energy to others.

Their society is a dog-eat-dog, literally. They are the top predators and often devour those lower on the food chain. Often times, the young is mostly eaten due to the fact that they are seen as more tender and have more energy but, the beasts make a conscious decision to not eliminate their food source. They have no concept of family or morality. Often newborns leave their mother as soon as they are born. Other members of the species often fight each other for dominance.

One day, one of the beasts was hunting down a smaller prey creature. A hole of was opened to grab to grab the smaller creature. However the smaller creature ran away and the beast came through instead. It came into the lab of Prof. Donovan Acker. It saw Donovan and tried to devour him and even injured him but, Donovan fought back. As they fought, Finn and Celia entered the room. Once the beast saw them and realized they were younger, chose to hunt them instead. After a long chase, Finn sacrificed himself to save Celia. After swallowing Finn, the beast looked to Celia and briefly considered swallowing her too, right then and there but, decided it had enough food already so she was spared.

It went the cave to get ready to go home when he realized it's prey was still alive in it. It then proceeded to have a telepathic conversation with Finn. When the beast asked Finn why didn't he sacrifice the "the weaker prey", Finn went on a rant how he would never sacrifice his little sister to save himself and that is better him than her. The beast was curious and Finn proceeded to talk about his morality, family and what it means to him. The beast for once intrigued by a "lesser being" and realizing that it would be impossible for it to digest him, it decided to give Finn a huge surge of energy, turning Finn into a energy being. The beast spat him back out and tore a hole back to its' dimension.
