Persona 5 (Actual Anime show)

Yea, Goro is way more popular in Japan than he is in America; its a combination of the aforementioned Values Dissonance and Yaoi Fangirls, because him and Joker are the most popular homosexual pairing of the game.

The thing here is that the specific social issue The Traitor's story is commenting on doesn't translate well to the West. Unwanted illegitimate children are a major target of Victim Blaming in Japan, whereas Westerners would tend to be sympathetic to such a person from the get-go and it's not seen as something worth turning into a serial killer over.

Even knowing about Japan's treatment of illegitimate children, I still struggle to see why it justifies murder. Even thinking of a Western equivalent (a target of racism or other such bigotry), I still don't see it.

And there lies the biggest contention with the Traitor.

It's like Sweeney Todd, y'know? Definitely in the wrong, but the people who have wronged him are so much worse he remains sympathetic in a weird way.

??? Prejudice is bad, obviously, but worse than murder? Especially since at least one of his victims (and there were probably more) was completely innocent.

It really doesn't help that when he reveals himself he becomes a deranged bloodthirsty lunatic.

Its a case of Nature vs. Nurture Would he had done all of that if society hadn't shunted him off?

Probably not. No one is born a murderer but it was Akechi's choice to turn his frustration and anger towards being a killer.

And again he doesn't have to act like a homicidal twat.

No. No he does not.

A lot of lives would have been spared if he'd just gone into Shido's Palace and shot his shadow in the face instead of his actual (and more complicated) plan, but hey, live and learn...unless you're Haru's dad...and Futaba's mom...and a truckload of other people.

It really would have benefited if we could have seen exactly how Akechi was treated. We only get a mention of it. Even if it did translate well for overseas audiences, having us see things from his perspective would help us better understand him. How it is presented in game makes him come across as just another villain with daddy issues when it did not have to be that way.

That might actually be one of the changes they plan on making. Letting us see a bit more of Akechi's suffering.

I actually wonder if they'll keep Akechi dead. Like, when he shoots his clone, they'll show a post-credits scene him waking up somewhere else. Maybe he'll show up to do the finishing blow to Yaldabaoth, Satanael didn't shoot it right and Akechi comes in to save the day. I'll laugh if that happens.

As for Goro's issues, I can understand him. If they just explained that being something like a bastard in Japan is the equivalent to being a discriminated minority I guess people could see why he does it. Japan keeps these borderline abusive traditional values that make me glad they focused on that in P5 and calling them out

Finally saw the episode, feels the anime is getting better as it goes along. But that CGI...URF Also weird Kamo didn't actually drink from the ann-cup. I do agree it lacked the emotional punch of the game but I've accepted this is basically Persona 5: abridged and budget.

I hope the english dub improves some things, but I can't help but realize that it's going to badly suffer from having to lip sync. I love the kamoshida calling card scene in english because of how Ann sounds when she's reading her card and how she sort of seems amused at the "utter bastard of lust" line but at the same time is like who wrote this crap? Ryuji's reaction makes the scene even better.

I'm most disappointed in how Joker is though. It's like they chose the most boring way to characterize him.

Also ryuji feels "softer" in the anime? Like he comes off more low-key while in the game he's more in your face.

When it comes to fight scenes, I prefer blatant CGI to minimal animation or stills.

And that's probably why I find myself so dang fond of anime Ryuji when I liked game Ryuji just "well enough."

I feel like people who sympathize with Akechi somehow forget that he literally killed Futaba's mom and would have killed Joker and a random policeman (or was it two, I don't remember) if the Phantom Thieves hadn't tricked him so their attitude is "oh, he only targeted people who probably deserved it!" Also did anyone die in the train crash? I don't know. He just makes things needlessly convoluted because he wants daddy to praise him before he kills him. Being generically attractive and liking pancakes is his biggest point of sympathy. If you want to write AU fanfics that's fine and good, but canonically, he's a trash bandicoot.

I definitely like game ryuji more, that spunk and roughess is what makes him stand out.

was it ever confirmed Akechi killed Futaba's mom? They didn't even know about the cognitive world without her research.

Yes she was assassinated by a breakdown & Goro is the only one who can cause it.

They took her research after she died.

Ok, I have some words to say about P5 Anime.

This anime has quite low amount of soul, dull and lacked the passion compared to the game itself. It feels like a cash grab and it seemed like everyone aren't doing it 100% and only there for their paycheck. The animation, the writing, the world building, the voice acting, none of the people really cared and tries to rely on the title itself to sell it. It would've been fine if it didn't have the word 'Persona 5', but it did and I'm kinda disappointed.

Compare it to Caligula the Anime. Sure that anime is weird and sometimes all over the place, but I enjoyed it because there's some talent and soul behind it. Especially since you basically had a game that isn't well received and they're trying to make up for it on the anime department.

From then on, my expectations are practically down the drain. I'll still keep on watching, just that I won't be expecting much anymore.

I wish the twist was Yusuke stays at Le Blanc and he, Ren, and Morgana are all roommates. Hijinks Ensue What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Maybe the twist is something to do with Morgana.
