I prefer the current, primarily because it's less work for such a minor thing. But another reason is that the ratio does not look weird and it looks fine.

Couldn't we rearrange it vertically, so that the equation goes from top to bottom instead of left to right? The 350 width limit causes any image wider than it is tall to go to waste, but if we make it a tall image the boxes can be much bigger.

No, the other one.
The boxes don't need to be bigger than that, so a vertical arrangement is unnecessary.
I don't think being one letter off hurts how well it illustrates, in particular due to how easy it is to figure out why.

The image's idea is fine, in my opinion... but dang, the black bars are insane. Would it be okay to replace with a version with way less of them? Here's how it would look like:
