What is Elemental Crafting?

From a failed Repair Call:

[Laconic.Elemental Crafting] says: An item's strength comes solely from the material it's made of.

The name of this page [makes it seem] more like it should refer to crafting items out of things such as fire and water or to items magically infused with such things while instead it is a hierarchy of materials from which weapons and armour are constructed.

So, what is it supposed to be?

What is it supposed to mean? Exactly what it is... the very standard hierarchy of material types typically used in Fantasy settings and the relative capabilities they normally have.

So, something like a Sliding Scale?

Except not sliding. It's a hierarchy — anything made of leather will be treated as "better" than anything made of cloth. Anything made of silver will be treated as "better" than anything made of copper. And so on.

It is a pretty misleading name, though. The TRS wasn't opened because the OP was phrased as "I think this is a bad name", with no supporting evidence at all.

Oh so thats what this is? It really doesn't read like it. Why isnt it named something like Armor Class Tiers and such and go into detail on the standard Cloth, Leather, Mail, Plate tiers and classes that equip them?

Also first clicking on the title that's much different than what I expected, was more expecting infusing elements into crafting like World Of Warcraft's patterns taking Mote Of Fire and such and potentially guarding vs said elements.

Material Class Tiers > Armor Class Tiers since it can apply to weapons (e.g. Fire Emblem).

[up]Those would be different tropes.

Various Armors have materials that have tiers in of themselves like World of Warcraft has various cloth tiers of Linen Cloth, Wool Cloth, Silk Cloth, Mageweave Cloth, Runecloth, Felcloth, Mooncloth, Netherweave Cloth, Frostweave Cloth, Embersilk Cloth, Windwool Cloth, Sumptuous Fur, Shal'dorei Silk. Each one stronger than the last and dropped by stronger and stronger mobs.

Material Tiers?

If you want to change the name, you should probably start a TRS for it, along with proving that it needs said rename.

Well replacing it with actual elemental crafting like infusing fire element items into armor and such would be a reason right?

What trope is that?

Well it would be a YKTTW but crafting and alchemy using the various elements, in video games the items used are typically solidified elements dropped off elemental beings.

I don't think wanting to change the name of a trope because it potentially conflicts with a hypothetical trope is a particularly good reason.

Elemental Weapon covers infusing your weapon with an element.

But Elemental Armor actually uses the element itself as armor...

And [up] why is wick check necessary if we're talking about titles that is non indicative by itself? Are we researchers or something?

We don't change names without a good reason. That reason is generally "It's broken."

To show that the name is broken, we almost always need a wick check, because if it's being used mostly correctly in the wiki, it's working, and therefore not broken. Even the best names will tend to have between 5 and 10% misuse in a wick check; we look for at least 25% or preferably higher, misuse to consider a rename.

If it's really "misleading" or "confusing", the wick check the wick check will show a pattern of misuse — the bad uses will tend to cluster around a particular misuse.

Though, in addition to misuse, a trope may also merit repairing if it's significantly underused.

Wick count is 122, which is pretty low for a page that's been around since 2008.

It's a really common trope used in damn near every game that has crafting as a form of progression, which is damn near everything nowadays.

It's also very common in games that don't have crafting, just buying or using. I'd say 122 wicks is underperforming for the ubiquity of the trope, even though by itself, 122 wicks would be considered on the low end of "Renowned".

[up] Yeah, those numbers on Wick may be slightly out-of-date. :)

[up] - I agree, and they don't take into account the number of works in each category... Like...

We have about 8600 Video Games... Depending on how many of those are RP Gs of some sort, I might expect Life Meter to have more than the 620 wicks it currently has? I dunno...

But this is off topic... Should we rewrite the description of Elemental Crafting? Or, at least its Laconic?

Entire rewrite probably and probably put back on to YKTTW for some actual examples cause no one seems to actually know this exists. The name change would be a HUGE help too.

What examples are on the page many seem miss the point of the trope entirely as well. A lot of them only talk about ore while the work itself uses tiers of cloth, leather and/or scales as well. As well as a lot just talk about some Unobtainium that is better which is NOT the trope.

Better formatting and natter cleanup too.
