It left me wanting far more to the central adventure going on in the movie, more about the Aether, more about the Elves, if Jane was going to be its vessel maybe more about her role in things beyond just being the love interest in trouble, etc.

I actually loved the way Earth was portrayed in the film in contrast to the previous film - as another battle ground and land of adventure with allies that Thor can fight alongside - matching up especially well with what we see of Hogun's world as seen in the beginning, but because imo that's where the movie was at its best there should've been more of that too: a Hobbit-esque realm-hopping adventure where each place has a stake in whether to use the Aether or not and the challenges in each realm lead up to the final battle. We also should've seen Svartalheim.

So yeah, it left me wanting more - because imo we got far less than we should despite the runtime.

Yeah, this film is the big movie to set up Infinity War and likely the last Thor movie. So while we are going to get more Thor, any resolution of the Asgard story will be swamped in the Infinity War story. A packed, wall-to-wall action, passable romp is not what fans want from the movie.

Running times are a balancing act. I've said for a long time that the Transformers movies would have been reasonable movies if they were shaved off by a half hour, because movies are an experience and negative sequences can overwhelm the good material. Howard Hawks famously said that when making a movie you need "three good scenes and no bad ones." So if you have a lot of great material, like Heat, people are okay with long running times.

Short running times for the genre are often considered a bad sign, people were just saying that about The Dark Tower. If Ragnarok has a lot of good material fans would be perfectly fine with a 2 1/2 hour film, as the Thor movies are supposed to be mythological epics.

The film isn't out yet. While I understand the concerns I feel like waiting until it actually comes to see if the runtime does prove to be a problem or not is more optional.

I'm the optimistic type so I'm hoping that while this movie is indeed an epic action romp it will also have some good serious & somber scenes involving the characters.

I mean there's no reason not to believe that the trailers are solely focusing on the fun adventure parts for wider audience appeal.

If a movie is too short or too long has little to do with its runtime. With a good movie you don't notice how much time you spend in the theatre, independent from its actual length.

Maybe they meant that the film is 100% of its minutes, which means it is as long as its length.

I'm curious how they're gonna properly answer how Loki got on the throne and what happened to Odin. That's kind of a big deal, and I'd hate to see it quickly hand-waved or given some two-second explanation.

Put me in the skeptical group that isn't sure how they're gonna rap up elements from the past films while also mixing in Planet Hulk and Ragnarok.

I'm also a little sad that it doesn't seem like Sif and the Warriors Three will really be in the film, especially with them having been so under used in the last movies.

There's a good chance some of that is going to be wrapped up in Infinity War, since it's confirmed that Loki is alive and scheming in that movie.

This is probably a Marvel movie I won't be going to see, I wasn't a huge fan of Guardians of the Galaxy and that's the vibe all the trailers are giving me.

I like Thor, but I don't like Hulk, so that's another problem. Hela seems cool though. I dunno. Ultimately I'll probably just wait until it hits video.

It actually looks more like a very director driven movie. This kind of humour is really typical for him.

[up]His biggest one was What We Do in the Shadows which those Team Thor skits take a ton of influence from. (Darryl is Stu from that film, the Everyman that everyone seems to like because of how ordinary he is).

[up][up] The humour in the movie in question mostly boils down to really batshit crazy stuff happening and everyone pretty much acting like this is normal.

I'm not sure I'm okay with Ragnarok reportedly having such a heavy comedic tone, but I take solace in the fact that I don't think any joke in Ragnarok will ever be as bad as Selvig running around naked because "Naked mentally ill people are hilarous!!"

Watched the movie. I'm not going to spoil anything and just post vague impressions.

  • I thought this would be an incredibly dark movie (I didn't actually watch the trailer other than the "He's a friend from work!" bit). But it's practically a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.5. It also has now my personal all time funniest moment in the entire MCU.
  • I did NOT see the ending coming. In both ways.
  • I like how like the other Phase 3 movies so far there are very intimate connections with other MCU movies.
  • All around a very solid movie in my opinion. I'll give 3.5 stars out of 4.

I saw it too, and wasn't impressed. I think the Guardians movies are rubbish, so of course I wasn't going to like a film that pretty much feels like an expansion pack for them.

Didn't help that The very title of the movie and Hela is basically the b-plot

I really enjoyed it.

Definitely in my top 3.

I loved the twist at the climax.

Just tried to watch that offical trailer. It was dire. Got halfway through and jacked it. Jumped back a few pages in the thread and watched the teaser trailer instead. That was awesome.

Led Zeppelin as opposed to whatever dreck of a tune was on the official trailer? No contest.

I'm going to see this film at some point, even though I've not seen either of the two previous Thor films.

Just watched it. My biggest problem is that it draws from some of the better source material in Marvel's comics (including some of the most iconic scenes ever), and treats them with none of the gravitas they deserve. Watching this movie with knowledge of its comic background actually detracts from the experience.

Didn't like it.

hela is, a mixed bag for me. My biggest issue with her new backstory is that it feels rather undercooked imo. They don't do that much with it that's truly interesting. So it comes across as rather "meh" to me. also they never really explain why she's called "The Goddess of Death" except for "well she likes killing people." Loki and Thor both have actual reasons to be called "The God of Mischief" and "The God of Thunder." With Hela, not so much. and she's just not onscreen enough. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to say that YET again with a Marvel villain (especially one that they hyped up this much). But alas it's true. of course this could change IF they bring her back/do more with her in future films, we'll see. on the positive side, Cate Blanchett was a joy to watch and I loved her every single second that she was onscreen (even if she wasn't onscreen enough imo). It'd be such a waste if she's just a one and done baddi imo.
