MARVEL's New Warriors--- A Freeform (ABC Family) Original Half Hour Comedy

Originally pitched as a Squirrel Girl solo series, this loosely-based adaptation of the New Warriors will be showrun by Kevin Biegel (Cougar Town, Scrubs) to premiere in 2018. According to the official blurb:

New Warriors revolves around about six young people with powers living and working together. With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world ... even if the world isn't ready. With Freeform focused on a group dubbed "becomers" — those experiencing a series of firsts in life including first loves and first jobs — New Warriors explores the journey into adulthood, except in this world, they're not quite super and not yet heroes and the guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.

The series will feature Marvel fan-favorite "Squirrel Girl" (aka Doreen Green) as a totally empowering fan girl who is described as tough, optimistic and a natural leader. Doreen is confident and has the powers of a squirrel: she's acrobatic, can fight and talk to other squirrels. Her most important trait is said to be her faith in people and ability to teach them to believe in themselves.

Anna Kendrick and Shannon Purser are currently considered for the Squirrel Girl role, the remaining members of the team have been chosen, and we don't specifically know what type of comedy they're gearing for.

Capitalized the crap out of these, huh.

I wasn't blown away by Powerless. Let's see if Marvel can do a half-hour comedy better.

[up]Same, especially after Damage Control was canned and retooled into a Tony Stark-owned clean up crew hijacked by the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming. I'm wondering if the staff ends up going with the Mockumentary style to capture the original comic's later run about superheroes in a live reality show setting?

There have been some great half-hour shows that have had real depth to them (The Good Place is the most recent one that comes to mind), but yeah, I share your concern. I really just want an entire Unbeatable Squirrel Girl show, with Nancy and Chipmunk Hunk and Koi Boi and Brain Drain and Mew and Cat Thor and everything.

Powerless sucks. Please let this be good! I never forgave Marvel after they wiped out the NW (who were at one point, Marvel's answer to the Teen Titans) just to set up Civil War (the comic not the movie.)

Also please don't turn this into just The Squirrel Girl show; there were plenty of cool NWs like Speedball.

Marvel's All Squirrel Girl All The Time and also a bunch of other people.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!

I don't think that there is a danger for them putting together the Great Lake Avengers (or was it West Coast Avengers) in this case. I think they will look for C-list heroes with powers which are easily adaptable for the TV screen.

That worked so well with Agents of SHIELD and Batman The Brave and the Bold... and Powerless, did we mention Powerless? :p

Heck, Arrow used Lady Cop.

Granted, Luke Cage did wonders with Cottonmouth.

Hmm...well I trust the guy who ran Scrubs and Cougar Town, those shows were pretty good.

[up][up] Both Batman the Brave and the Bold and Ao S are highly underrated shows...and Ao S has managed four seasons, which is more than most shows nowadays get. And what about Legion? Legion is far from being an A or B-lister and the show is universally praised.

The advantage of C-listers is that next to no-one has any preconceived notion how the character in question should be. They need Squirrel Girl as sort of draw but otherwise, they can go crazy.

Speedball and Night Thrasher aren't. They're two of the most iconic New Warriors whose rights aren't tied up in a major film character.

Like, I'm not saying Namorita, the Scarlet Spider, or Nova are never going to happen, but the movies have a lot of groundwork to lay before they'd be even remotely plausible. I am saying that Firestar is never going to happen, however. Because she's a mutant.

They pretty much had to pull up obscure members and composite the team with some other sources to make a lineup that works, because nearly all of its iconic members fall under the "Snowball's Chance in Hell" category of appearing in this show.

I only know Speedball as the guy who decided to make himself armor that constantly stabs him with spikes in atonement for the Stamford thing which is quite possibly the edgiest thing I've ever heard.

This song needs more love.

Isn't he the one that pretty much caused Civil War?

Doreen's the only one I'm even remotely familiar with, so, like with Cloak and Dagger, this show is going to be a new experience.

I just remember Speedball going wangsty as hell as "Penance" and Squirrel Girl making fun of it in one comic. Apparently he even put his dog in a Penance outfit.

It's not really fair to blame Speedball, specifically. He just shouldered all the blame because he was the only one who wasn't killed in the Stamford explosion, so he became a lightning rod of hate afterwards.

Honestly, if anyone should be blamed, it's Namorita. I mean, if anyone should be blamed, it's Nitro. Let's get that out of the way first and foremost. Nitro's the one who actually exploded and killed all those people. It's his goddamn fault, something that always gets lost in these discussions.

But of the Warriors, if you're going to say that any of them f*cked up and caused this, it should be Namorita. She's the one who divebombed Nitro, shoved his face into a bus in front of an elementary school, then stepped back and postured about how great she is while he was stlil an active threat.

Well, the chance that Nitro turns up in New Warriors is pretty slim...he is still stuck in the giant pokeball.
