OK, let's say that there was in a comic based off of a popular franchise. Let's say that it was published mid-nineties. And there was one character, (Let's just call him Al) who appeared consistently alongside everyone else...until about, say, issue five. Then Al started not appearing in the second stories of each issue, (Or having a nonspeaking cameo in the first page and then completely ignored) and in one of the "letters to the editor section" one of the question was: "Will Al be in every issue?" and Bob, the editor, simply responded. "No." Now throughout the run, Al had with gone what started out as a minor Adaptation Personality Change, which began with him being slightly more wimpy, then grew a Hair-Trigger Temper, significantly more dishonest, slippery, violent, and in general, well, let's say the moral compass tilted quite a bit, usually when the comic was being written by a certain writer-let’s call him Charlie-and most of the time it was being written by Charlie. Occasionally a bit of Character Rerailment would surface-usually when considerably less frequent writers Derek or Ethan occasionally wrote the script. Charlie was the one who wrote Al’s final appearence, where he got a little too in-character undercover, and ditched the group in favor of becoming-let’s say a real-estate mogul. The last scene has another character going off to fetch him, however from then on Al was completely absent throughout the rest of a comic series run. While Al wasn’t the only character in the comic who Took a Level in Jerkass, he was the only one to disappear halfway through. Suppose Al was a bit of a base-breaking character, perhaps changing him was the writer’s way of trying to make older audiences appreciate him? Or could Charlie have secretly loathed Al and deliberately had him act in such a way so the editors would have no choice but to remove Al from the story out of concern for younger readers?

If I were Charlie, then why would I be asking this? I just want to know what happened to Al.

[up][up][up] Wouldn't it make more sense to fire Charlie instead of removing Al in the last scenario? And I'm pretty certain that if the censors were really that concerned about the younger readers, then they'd send Charlie back to the drawing board before the comic could even be inked.
