We should seriously try to find a replacement. It's a political cartoon depicting John A. Sutter as profiting from the gold rush at "Sutter's Mill" when it actually ruined his his life and he died poor in Philidelphia. There's a decent article here.

Alfredo Rodríguez has more than a few gold rush paintings that could work as a replacement.

Any of the replacement suggestions can work.

As far as I can tell, the OP's argument is that the current is not an example in historical context, not that it doesn't show the trope. A good illustration =/= a good example. It's still leagues better than any of the suggestions in illustrating greed and obsession over gold.

Keep Until Better Image Suggested.

Seeing that this is not a setting trope I agree that examples in 1 don't show enough of the corruptive quality of the gold on the human mind.

I was kinda wondering if we did have a trope for the setting. The closest I guess would be Prospector, which is a character trope.

Wow, how did I miss the article for the image? Now that I've actually read it, I see it isn't about the perils of prospecting but a people going nuts over suddenly finding great material wealth.

Therefore:

  1. the Enutrof from Dofus
  2. maybe one of Ruel Stroud as he has more examples from Wakfu. And for whatever reason the gallery on the Wakfu website is randomized and doesn't allow direct links, so... click for image
  3. Gargamel plus gold from The Smurfs.
  4. Presumably from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride: skeleton hugging pile of gold.

Yeah, let's go ahead and crowner this.

Here's a crowner with the suggestions from post 9 onwards, since the OP themselves acknowledged that the earlier suggestions didn't fit the trope as described.

Not really a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean one though, with I think overlaps with Death by Materialism or Artifact of Death more than just plain obsession. Gargamel with a huge pile of gold makes me think of a diffferent trope as well, though I'm not sure which... perhaps Eerily Out-of-Place Object.

I feel like current should have been thrown into the mix. It's not such a bad example after all.

This is ready to call. The new pic's up and tagged; caption?

Also, can anyone that's familiar with Wakfu add the example to the page? It's a ZCE on his character entry.
