We need to change the "3 separate pages for each franchise" rule. Here's why.

So, this may not be the absolute best argument for changing a rule, but I feel the need to bring this up since the whole situation is rather silly.

So, Sega Hard Girls. It is a franchise. That was the intention from the start. There are even three works: the light novels (of which there is No Export for You), the anime, and a video game. Yet, because there are only two media pages, there cannot be a franchise. Normally, I would just throw my hands up in the air and say OK, except there's three reasons as to why I will not.

1. The series has been Screwed by the Network. There were serious doubts that the video game was even going to be released here: it was owned by Sega, and Idea Factory had to go through serious hoops in order to get the rights to publish the game. The anime still does not have a dub, and probably never will, because that would require getting the rights to a dub. The light novels are probably not going to be released here at all.

2. Every work in the franchise has a separate title. The anime is "Hi Scoool Se Ha Girls!" The game is "Superdimension Neptune vs. Sega Hard Girls". And the light novels have a separate title, too (although I forget what it is: it may simply be the same as the franchise's title). Thus, they are not grouped in the same category, making a franchise page wanted, if not necessary, so that separate works in the franchise can be found without having to dig.

3. The rule was instituted, more or less, because two works within a franchise were likely to share many of the same tropes. The problem is that the only thread connecting separate works within in the Sega Hard Girls franchise is the Sega Hard Girls. The anime has its own continuity focused around Sega crossover mayhem, the light novels are a harem series, and the video game is a Crossover between the Sega Hard Girls and Video Game/Neptunia. Even what the Sega Hard Girls are and how they act seems to differ between games.

In other words, more or less the only reason as to why the series does not have a franchise page is "that's the rules". Now, I understand that the rules were instituted for a reason: too many Franchise pages when they were not really necessary. But maybe we could make an exception for special cases like this? Maybe we could change the rules to be a little less strict. Or maybe we could just have the creators, editors, or mods of the page determine whether or not a Franchise page is really necessary?

...The main reason as to why I am so concerned about this in the first place is because it seems to defy one of the major principles of the Wiki, that being There Is No Such Thing As Notability. This series needs a Franchise page, but its not getting one, almost purely because it has less than 3 pages. Lacking a series page fits the letter of the rules, but not so much the spirit.

I don't think changing rules just so a particular work can be included is a good idea.

There Is No Such Thing as Notability covers the inclusion of works and examples, not the definition of a franchise. Something being created with the purpose of being a franchise isn't the definition we use for what a franchise is.

If they're so different, why not just have two separate pages for them, and link to the other in the description? And if you want to, you can still create a work page for the light novel if you're familiar with it. That's something There Is No Such Thing as Notability actually covers. It doesn't have to exist in English. It's usually helpful, since it brings more readers, as it's an English-language wiki, but the works themselves can be in any language.

[up]...I guess my question is, then: is there other cases like this? If so, maybe the rule should be changed.

There's an unaddressed question here: What is the purpose of the Multimedia Franchise Namespace?

The purpose is not "add more pages for a work". You claimed the reason for the rule was "more or less, because two works within a franchise were likely to share many of the same tropes." That's not correct, either. A videogame franchise that uses the same tropes in multiple works can have a videogame franchise page in the Videogame Namespace.

The purpose of the Multimedia Franchise page is to connect multiple works pages. If they don't connect multiple works pages, they aren't a franchise. Single media superwork pages belong on their media namespace.

So without "multiple" (the minimum is three, instead of, say, five) pages, it doesn't qualify for another page for the work. The purpose of the Multimedia page is to index the individual media together and include examples of tropes common to all elements of the multimedia franchise. Essentially, if the trope examples are being written correctly, the majority of Multimedia Franchise examples will be written with at least three examples, one from each minimum media.

Your big contention to putting this work specifically in Multimedia Franchise seems to be because Americans aren't getting an official export of this one work. That's not sufficient reason to forbid the work from getting pages. A lack of knowledge would be sufficient reason, but if you can gain first-hand knowledge about the tropes, then you can make pages for every work.

You've not provided any decent reason for why this series should be an exception.

  1. Screwed by the Network is irrelevant to whether something gets a franchise page, or whether it's considered a franchise in the first place, by most definitions even outside TV Tropes.
  2. Works having different titles also doesn't matter at all. A title has very little to do with how a work is classified.
  3. The last point isn't relevant to the number of works in a franchise. There's no reason why two works of a franchise would share a significantly different number of tropes compared to three works.

But mostly, the way we use the Franchise namespace and the dictionary definition of "franchise" aren't the same thing. It doesn't matter how many works in different media a franchise has. What matters is how many pages we have for them.

...Fine. You win.

Feel free to lock this thread, I don't know why I decided now was a good time to try to change things.

Nor do I see why you thought they needed changing, since our system already accommodates the exact thing you're trying to accomplish. Yelling about it because you have a stylistic disagreement is supremely pointless. Anyway, locking.
