Love and romance are among the most commonly talked about topic in music, so there are obviously many great (and many not so great) songs like that out there. If there are any in particular for which you have an affinity, go ahead and post 'em here. Whether it's a love song, an anti-love song, a breakup song or a song about lost love, a song talking about love and romance as abstract concepts (or even a song about just trying to understand, understand the concept of love), anything relating to the topic, I wanna hear what you've got to bring to the table here, as well as why you like the song (or some bit of discussion about the song in general at least, rather than just lazily linking or embedding it).

I'll start off with "Eye Know" by De La Soul. This song I feel is honestly one of the most heartfelt, beautiful, and emotionally honest love songs I've ever heard in my life. It's got a fantastic beat and well-placed samples that complement the themes perfectly, and Pos and Dove have the most calm, serene, direct, reassuring delivery I've heard in all of hip-hop. All I can say is, "it's true..."

Is it okay to list an album or two? Cause if so, I Love You, Honeybear by Father John Misty and Songs About Fucking by Big Black are two amazing albums about awful love stories going wrong. Father John Misty brings a childlike wonder to the compositions as he curses and insults his way through a seemingly failed marriage that is somehow still holding together, while Big Black makes songs about fucking and what goes wrong in the process, all backed by proto-industrial, noise rock, and post-punk.

Never checked out Father John Misty, even though I did love the Fleet Foxes. Heard mixed things about his stuff, some that it's still really good indie folk-pop, others that it's pretty much the epitome of hipster trash. Still wanna check it out when the money is right to make up my own mind, though.

Songs About Fucking I'll admit is an album I've had on my hard drive and in my music library for years (downloaded solely for the novelty of the album title) and still haven't listened to. All I really know about Big Black otherwise is that Steve Albini was in it.

I've always thought "Rowboat" by Beck is one of the best songs about unrequited love/still trying to hang onto a relationship after a breakup. Although some might prefer Johnny Cash's cover because it has better production and it's freaking Johnny Cash. Personally, I like both versions but prefer Beck's. I don't know whether it's because the amateurish production almost compliments the simplistic music and lyrics or if it's because the way he delivers the vocals, he sounds kind of detached, as if he's emotionally numb, whereas Cash belts it out like he would any other song.

"Eye Know" is a solid pick, I love the amount of innocence and sunshine to this song. Also, to be fair, not all "Songs About Fucking" involve love stories gone awry - there's at least one song about tripping out after eating stale, fungus-ridden bread, one about a girl who slept away most of her life and one about someone who may be a furry if the term existed back in 1987.

I do love the album.

Anyway, one song of this kind that really touched me is "All Her Favorite Fruit" by Camper Van Beethoven. It was an unexpected feat, too, becuase for their first four albums this band stuck with life-loving, humorous, sometimes nonsensical lyrics, but their last album before the hiatus was much more serious in tone. This song in particular is about a secret love for a woman that's already taken, probably married, and all the fantasies that come with it. It's one of those songs that sound really happy on the surface but quite sad once you dig deeper.

I would like to love ya, I sure would treat ya right... Not a big fan of love songs, and this one is more honest than most. Love Clutch lyrics. Neil Fallon is just a great lyricist.

"Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues. It's such a heartbreaking and beautiful look at unrequited love.
