Cole kept his back turned as the conversation went on, seemingly uninterested in anything that the others were saying. Anyone...save perhaps Kashira...might think he was more interested in the ceiling or the walls around them, given the way he was looking around the room, apparently at random, rather than actually paying attention.

When Dio finished speaking, though, the boy's head turned at once towards him, one eyebrow slightly raised, before he turned around again, reaching back to put away his daggers.

"People are not bread."

That cryptic little line uttered, he started walking, apparently taking some interest in what others in the area were doing, wandering mostly in the direction of the merchant.

Weiss—Tower—The ice queen and the Child soldier.

Weiss signaled to Claw to let him know he would come to him soon, as cold as she could be, she didn't want to cut Qrow in case he wanted to add thoughts of his own.

Luckily she was still close enough to hear Tanya, the child soldier about her tainted past.

Weiss had had her own fair share of pain loneliness and death were not foreign to her. But the heiress had also been spared from a lot of suffering as well. She had never had to worry about food or looking for a place to live, like Tanya did. In some ways the major had been braver than her. Could she abandon all her riches herself?

"I had no idea," she said in the middle of Tanya's tale. She had just heard the basics of Tanya's past, but hearing the complete story was like a punch in the stomach . Her mouth half opened, and her eyes were wide open. Weiss then looked sadly focused on the twelve year old girl. The heiress blinked and closed her eyes.

Weiss walked towards Tanya and then she touched her in her left arm as a sign of support. For them the Great War was but a memory of the past, but in front of her was someone that still lived through it and as a child.

" I can relate of feeling alone and lost. But you don't have to be. My friends taught me that," she told Tanya.

"Don't call yourself " a bastard", Tanya; You have fought more fights than many, and frankly you deserve better.—Whether they helped you or not, I find unforgivable that this "empire" had allowed you to fight on their behalf. You're still a child and nobody should take that away from you."

Reimu

"Tea is ready."

The announcement came quietly, but firmly. One did not come between a Gensokyoan and teatime, especially not the Hakurei Shrine Maiden. Kettle, cups, biscuits and tea leaves had all been supplied by Risinn, then carefully prepared on the bonfire. Everyone gathered around the larger cookfire (Sumireko, Tanya, Claw, Shirou, Weiss, Qrow, etc.) would soon find themselves being gently but insistently offered green tea in a sturdily made cup. The elven tea smelled of herbs, but not unpleasantly so, and it tasted faintly of green forests. Not a patch on proper green tea, in Reimu's opinion, but tea was tea.

The shrine maiden passed around a package of dry bread as a way of snacks, for what was teatime without a bite to eat? The flat bread was dry and splendidly crunchy, which pleased Reimu, and while largely tasteless, it had a faint hint of faraway spices and sea salt. Traveler's food, Risinn had called it, meant for long voyages by sea. Reimu had purchased another pack of wood elf biscuits, safely stashed away for the next tea time.

Or, purchased was a strong word. Risinn was much more generous with credit than the merchants back home, who often had to be reminded, sometimes quite insistently, of Reimu's generous contributions to the human village's well-being before they would give her a reprieve of payment between donations.

Gaige (Tower)-Horry for exile!

Gaige nodded as the merchant gave her backstory, then raised her hand to hi-five the merchant.

"Nice, that's a great backstory, your mom sounds like a total buzzkill, you're so much better off being a merchant like this, you know what you need to do, come home with a giant pile of gold that's like the size of your mansion just to shove it in her face. That'll show her.

Zazy (Tower)-Stating the obvious

I raised an eyebrow as the man told me more or less what I myself had just told him, that this curse was of my own making.

"I am aware of the cause of my curse, as I just stated to you myself. That said, who are you to presume to lecture me on my actions? I have spoken much of myself, yet I know little of you, save that you appear value brute strength over all else and seem to have a violent streak."

Guts - The Tower

"I'm telling you not to look down on us."

Guts' glare didn't waver, and though he was calm and steady on the outside, the back of his voice seemed to burn. It wasn't clear if he bore any legitimate hatred, or if he simply had a prejudice against the immortal.

"Knowing people like you, I probably don't have to imagine the number of people you've stepped on to reach your dream of eternity. It's natural; if the strong want to pursue their dreams, they gotta pave a road from the bodies of the weak. And now you want to kill yourself and let all that be in vain?"

In truth, Guts wasn't speaking to baldie. A different figure was on his mind as he spoke.

"Immortals like you make me sick. Weaklings even more so."

His voice wavered ever so slightly when he spoke of weaklings.

Momiji

"No worries, man. We all have people that we want to hit every now and then." The binbougami told the much taller patient with an airy wave as she finally finished tightening the bundle, though her eyes seemed to be roving around towards empty air in between the space that spanned across the pompadork and the male stripper he punched, as though she was seeing there was something there that others couldn't. After a few seconds of this and another glance at the high school teen, Momiji finally straightened up and had her face morph from being sharp to that of a spaced out dullard, a sharp cry from her earlier serious expression.

"Still, try not to aggravate yourself too much until the wounds scab over at the very least. And don't worry about it too much. All actions beget karma and there is no stopping the force. You can put it off and hide from it but... well, sooner or later it's going to happen." Saying those cryptic words, the raggedy blonde woman all but exuded a certain sense of... guarantee, as though experiences before have tempered her confidence in such a thing to a knife's edge of surety. One couldn't be the harbinger of misfortune without being savvy about such matters after all.

Tanya

"Truces... won't be made until things reach the lowest point. Everyone is too stubborn in their ways, confident that they can end things quickly. Brinksmanship is only going to escalate and I don't think the Empire would be willing to disarm the majority of their military might in the first place since doing so would leave them at the mercy of the other great powers. It was only because the Fatherland has such a breakthrough in military might that we've been invaded as well, a preemptive strike to keep my country in check as it were." Finding that there was now no fish left to clean while I was muttering my counterargument, I then used a brief bit of magic on my hands to separate the various byproducts off of my skin to clean in a way that did not need soap or water, the fishy smelling solids and liquids floating around my hands before streaking off into the fire so as to not needlessly dirty the eating area before the same spell was cast upon my blade to keep it sharp and clean.

The psychic known as Sumireko then spoke up about the so-called vacation, her gaze full of sympathy that I dearly wished existed on the top brass. A brief bit of thought on the matter and I couldn't help but feel my lips quirk upwards, seeing as that I was now away from that horrible world and from the so-called omniscient eye of Being X. Granted it was set up to be a game for another being of great power but this one seemed quite a bit more lax in interfering than the previous entity. "You're an optimist... but I suppose that such thoughts can be true in this certain case. Very well, a break from duty it is. My only hope is that conflict could be kept to a minimum for peace is much better than violence." Those were words extremely true to my heart, after all if one didn't focus on aggravating each other, the collective community would be able to perform many great things and keep efficiency to an all-time high.

Perhaps the most startling action of all belonged to that of the young noblewoman, such an action showed that for all her intents at appearing to be the so-called ice queen, she was still young enough to display a tender heart to such displays. "Thank you for the sentiment, Fraulein Schnee. Your words are a balm most soothing." The fact that such empathy meant that she might be tempted to buy my services in the future did leave me in a good mood, for the feelings of humans could indeed lead to either rewards or consequences. Letting the physical contact linger for a few more seconds, a nod was then given as my hand reached towards her own and gave it a reassuring squeeze, the slightest of pressures to acknowledge the acceptance of such empathy.

Lo and behold, yet more unexpected events happened as a particularly bossy shrine maiden that looked like she pandered to the parasite shut-ins and jobless of Japanese society took it upon herself to all but throw herself into our merry little campfire ring, serving what appeared to be substitutes for green tea and accompanying snacks. How nostalgic was this, being treated to rituals pertaining to that of my first culture. Clasping the cup, I took a sip and found the flavor to be slightly reminiscent of what it was supposed to be emulating while drastically differing in many other areas. "Thank you, fraulein."

Still, the fact that tea could be consumed was a wonderful feeling in and of itself considering that the Empire was much like Germany in many regards, and thus an avid consumer of coffee for their morning stimulants. The snacks were probably a sort of rations made to last a long time and yet had a texture and taste that was many levels higher than the likes of K-Brot or MRE rations, something that made me happy considering that as we were, the group is but a band of tramps and vagabonds without a reliable source of supplies outside of the one monopolizing merchant that can only provide so much. Thoughts on whether we would need to scavenge useful utilities from the upcoming missions were added onto the list of mental objectives to accomplish while the physical body relaxed to enjoy the feeling of simple mortal conversation making.

Sabrina, Tower

Sabrina nodded as she listened to Risinn's instructions. She found it an odd request as Potions in her world are medical sprays which heal the Pokemon as Risinn had ended up describing. Soon enough, Sabrina joined the others to sit down around the cookfire to have some tea and flatbread.

"This is good."

Sabrina's Pokemon, Tower

Sabrina's Pokemon seemed to have returned to interacting with Lusamine's Pokemon as Lusamine and Lillie talked about bigger bags with Nebby.

Nitori and Toph - Small Mercies

Well, things seemed to have calmed down a bit, even if accusations and interrogation were distressingly commonplace. To Toph it seemed a can of worms she really should not have dipped her hand into, though it had been very briefly in comparison to some of these others.

Nitori too, could feel her fear ebbing, which was good. But the brown human seemed inclined towards ignoring her, which was far less so. She moved behind him and tugged again, more insistently.

Kashira Lavellan - In Hushed Whispers

Kashira listened, but more to what wasn't being said than what was. Everyone had an agenda, a way to talking that told you who they were, what they were after. Varric's world was friends and stories, Cassandra's world was faith and justice, even she herself concealed things, spoke in certain ways, didn't speak of particular things. Look for the gaps, the mysteries, the unanswered questions.

The truth is often silent, yet staring you in the face.In this case, what she learned of Dio was frustratingly little, but tantalizing enough to hint at mountains of secrets. He had known multiple scions of Joestar's family, Josuke had confirmed as much, but he said that they had sought him out, that they had learned of his awakening. How did they know? How did they find him?

Why did he let them? Kashira knew little of immortals, but she knew it was absurdly easy for them to vanish into the masses of mortals in the world and next to impossible to find them unless they chose to be found. When they found him, if he truly was the victim, why did he not offer proof of his words? He had to have it. Or was the truth against him? Or was a family really just that stubborn and refused to accept truth when it was laid out before them? What does an immortal do for fun, anyway, in all that time? How did he come to have an adoptive brother?

Dio was a man, she was beginning to think, who focused intently on dedication to some higher, maybe abstract ideals and ideas, the primal essence of what was. It was the way he lightly touched on the events, but managed to convey everything that needed to be said and leave no room for her to push further. It was in his easy enjoyment of a fight, his eloquence, and his disdain of fighting for the sake of fighting. That last, she was fairly certain was true. After all, when you were immortal, what was the challenge of any fight anymore? What was there beyond just winning in a fight to want or wish for? No, he was after something deeper, something...sublime. Well, she had a lot to think about. Maybe Josuke could illuminate matters further. She certainly wasn't going to try and match wits with an immortal.

She nodded, replacing her staff on her back.

"Good enough for now. This isn't my fight either and if it isn't causing trouble, that's how it'll stay. I admit to some curiosity about the life of an immortal. Perhaps later we might speak further."

Giving a slight bow, she turned back in Josuke's direction. Cole's words had not gone unnoticed and although she didn't understand and he rarely shared one person's hurts with another, they sent a chill down her spine all the same. She wasn't entirely sure why.

"Toph, I think you can put the walls down," she said to the earthbender. "It's over for now."

Qrow - Tower

"Heh." Qrow chuckled. "Yeah, I guess you could say that."

Qrow accepted the green tea, and poured a little something extra into it from his flask.

"The Schnee family semblance is probably one of the most powerful and versatile out there. And the only price you gotta pay for it is being born a Schnee. Hard price, I know."

Despite his own, he doubted if he'd be willing to pay it.

"But when you travel around the world like I have, you get to see a lot of semblances. And not everyone gets to be as lucky as you. Some people get real unlucky."

He sipped his tea, and sat back next to the fire.

"But no matter the luck of the draw, it's up to you to make something of yourself. Your grandfather did it, and I have to admit your sister is at least doing something with hers. Can't waste your gifts, or give up because you weren't born special. Just gotta make do."

Baron

"What da hell do you mean "is all fine"?!" Baron exclaimed in exasperation. The British tit over there was being cryptic on stuff that, in his honest opinion, was something really, really important. The guy over there had almost bled himself out and Dio said it himself, that Jonathan guy had to kill him four times. You don't get kill people unless you have a reason behind that, and a quadruple homicide sounded like it would require some really bad shit to have happened.

"Eggplant homie ovar dere got half his muddafuckin' blood punched out and dis cracker here is just tauntin' us like we're some punk-ass asswipes. Dat really cool with you, elven lady?" There was some small respite in that the scrawny kid in a giant hat was not too convinced of the British tit's story, it seemed. "Come on, that Jon-man did ya in four times, and now his muddafuckin' kids and grandkids are chasin' you down. Wat in da fuck did ya do? Killed his dog? His dad? His girlfriend?"

Claw

Any commentary he might have had was interrupted by that shrine maiden handing everyone tea. Well, she called it tea and Claw hadn't admittedly have one in a long, long while, but it... didn't smell right.

"You call that tea?" He muttered in grumpy derision, but accepted the cup with a grateful nod, catching sight of Qrow spicing up his with something with a kick. "Well, I suppose it's been a while since I've had one, anyway..." No self-respecting pirate would catch himself drinking it; it was the domain of posh fopdoodles from the Navy.

It wasn't half-bad, really, and the dry bread with a hint of sea salt in it definitely added to it, on top of the fish about ready for eating. "What do you think the tower has in store for us this time?" He addressed the general gathering by the campfire.

"There's quite the variety for you to choose from," Lusamine said to Nebby.

"Bewa!" Bewear happily agreed, displaying her carried handbags.

"It looks as though someone's prepared tea," she added to Lillie after Reimu's announcement. "Would you care to have some, Lillie?"

Weiss—Tea time

Weiss nodded to Qrow after he gave his little pep talk about semblances. A part of her was curious about his semblance, but she didn't press the issue.

"Luck is never enough, that's why I keep practicing. I might not be perfect—yet. But I'll be."

Still she decided to comment on the issue of her family. "I know you might not think highly of us. But I'm not oblivious to the questionable dealings my father has made. Thats why I want to uplift the name of my family "

Still Qrow's words about worrying for herself didn't ring hollow. As much as Qrow had a "difficult" relationship with his sister, he gave her a similar advice. "And possibly learn more about myself."

Suddenly, Reimu came to offer tea.

"That's quite nice of you, thank you, " Weiss told the shrine maiden.

Weiss touched the cup of tea with delicacy, arching her fingers in the exact way a princess would, only using two of her fingers to hold the cup of tea from the handle. The heiress took a small sip from her cup of tea, closing her eyes, savoring the liquid in her mouth very slowly.

She then took a bite of the dry bread that Reimu had passed over, giving a bit so small that it was barely noticeable she had eaten from it at all

Well, at least she said "please". It seemed that during all of this the overall mood got a little lighter, something Asgore was thankful for. Glancing over to the people at the bonfire, he could see that they were having tea time. Since he wasn't doing anything other than simply standing around he decided to approach that group.

"I see you are having tea, do you mind if I join in?" he asked the group as a whole.

Sumireko, Renaissance of The Tea Party
Hard to tell, but for a second it seemed like Tanya smiled in response. Maybe she just had her nose twitch or something, but Sumireko smiled back. However, she found herself at odds with her statement. As terrifying her first adventure in Gensokyo was, it was all the more exhilarating because of it. Even if she didn't want to admit it, getting into some light, harmless fighting seemed nice.

She really doubted that Tanya knew any harmless fighting, though.

Any and all notions of psychopathic manslaughter were dismissed when Reimu brought over some tea! She'd almost forgotten about that in all of this fish-cleaning excitement. Sumireko took the cup with a polite nod as she said "Thank you, Reimu." Then, she took a quick sip...which was postponed, as she tried to figure out what she was tasting exactly. Not bad, by any means, but it wasn't what she expected whatsoever.

Could've been worse.

When a...goat youkai? A pretty massive goat youkai, or a satyr, or something along those lines stopped on by their little gathering, Sumireko was quick to say "Of course. We're all working on this together" with a quick aside glance to those who were definitely not, "anyone's welcome. We were just gonna give our guesses on what the Tower's gonna throw at us."

"Now, I don't know about the rest of you," she said to the little crowd around her, "but I'd take a guess that this'll be something easy. You know, if this is the first or second trip out for all of us, they'll scale it accordingly. If we have all these people, finding something won't be hard, right?"

The Tower (Pokemon Group)

Nebby looked at the displayed bags, then it looked back at Lillie. Then it frowned and hopped about, as if throwing a small tantrum.

"Peeeeeeeeeeew...."

"Nebby...." Lillie replied, frowning herself, "...I know you don't like being in a bag. But sometimes you have to, for your own safety. I'm at least trying to make those times a little more comfortable for you." She then reached out and gently patted Nebby on the head, in an attempt to calm it down. "...And I'm trying to become a better person in general, for both our sakes. Even if it takes a while.... I hope we'll get to the point where we won't need the bag anymore. Can you hold on for that long, Nebby?"

In response to being pet, Nebby stopped hopping around and looked up at her again. It was silent for a few moments as Lillie patted it.

"Pew," it eventually said. It still didn't look entirely happy, but it seemed to understand at least a little bit.

"...I'll take that as a yes."

Lillie then turned to Mother and her Bewear.

"...Maybe you could put the bags down on the floor? I don't think Nebby can really look at them while you're holding them...."

At the mention of tea, she looked up and noticed the gathering not too far away from where they currently were. If she remembered correctly, tea was something the cafes in Hau'oli City offered. Then again, she tended not to order much from them, so she wasn't quite sure what she thought of it.

Well, if she was going to make good on what she just told Nebby...being open to new things was a form of self improvement, wasn't it?

"...Sure, that sounds nice...."

Claw, Fish & Tea Party

"By all means, Mr. Asgore, have a seat." Claw nodded, adding his own confirmation alongside Sumireko's. Speaking of, she seemed to be under an impression that this would be an easy climb.

"Lass, our first floor had us deal with two mad kings wielding swords that could split heavens in two. We've killed one and almost shot each other to pieces." Something which he still was slightly uppity about, for the record. He wouldn't shy away from a fight, but a fight for the sake of it was simply dumb. "I would be surprised if it gets any easier."

"Of course I can!" Lusamine said to Lillie, setting her carried bags down in front of Nebby as Bewear did likewise.

"Now let's see about that tea. Bewear can keep Nebby company and look at the bags," she added before starting to walk towards the area where the others were drinking, Milotic perking up and following behind her at the mention of tea.

"I think this is a pleasant-enough flavor, don't you agree Lillie?" she asked after taking a sip of tea, before moving the cup a bit away from her face so that Milotic could bend down from behind her and sneak a taste of the beverage as well.

KOS-MOS — der Wille zur Regenschirm

As Remilia's one-person maelstrom whirled about her person and whipped her longer azure locks around in a disordered frenzy, KOS-MOS' iron grip only stubbornly tightened around the target's elegant, u-shaped handle. At this rate, the integrity of the parasol itself would probably give in before either of them did. More importantly, the mini-nosferatu tornado was completely ruining her lovingly maintained hairstyle (artificial though the gynoid's strands may have been)!

Things certainly could not go on like this. And so, KOS-MOS concluded, it seemed she was left with little choice but to pull out an unexpected ability of her own. With a pronounced click, the centerpiece of her headgear rotated down and slid into place over her eye, unfortunately catching up some of her wayward bangs in the process. Though this made it a little troublesome to process the readout on the pseudo-eyepatch's display, the tangled strands of azure didn't really impair her in any other way. Thankful not for the first time that her inhuman body didn't register sensations like pain, the robotic woman tapped a little deeper into her power supply and announced her actions to the world out of sheer force of programmed habit:

"Activating Hilbert Effect."

A sphere of luminous purple-blue filled with randomly fluctuating white lines surged forth from her forehead and enveloped the robot, the whirlwind of crimson, and their immediate vicinity, but extended no further. For fear of disrupting any irreplaceable systems in her allies' possession, KOS-MOS had severely limited its diameter, though not it's potency. Fortunately for her reserves, this also meant it didn't take nearly as much power to produce the Effect as it usually would have.

The Hilbert Effect: an elegant solution devised by the ingenuity of sixty-first century human science in response to the increasing prevalence of attacks by Gnosis, beings in complete defiance of physics which emerged from the realm of "imaginary" space into "real", physical space. To counteract those ghostly entities who were able to ignore at will the principles that governed base matter, the Hilbert Effect was produced, a field that, at least for a time, forced those otherworldly phenomena into the ordered realm of physical laws. For Gnosis, this meant becoming just as solid as anything else.

For a denizen of Gensokyo... well, it wasn't terribly clear what would happen, or even if anything would happen at all. Still, almost anything to stop the small vampire's crimes against hair and common decency was worth trying at this point, and if there were to be any harmful impact on her unique existence, she would at least be back to normal within the hour.

Weiss Schnee—Tea Group—Answering open questions.

For a small child Tanya was already showing more experience than her in survival. The child soldier knew more about cooking than her for one. What other secrets was she hiding?

"Be my guest," the heiress replied to Asgore, before she drank her team with another small sip.

"I didn't expect this place to attract so many Faunus around here." Like Qrow said, "reverse Faunus" was more accurate, but harder on the toungue.

Then Sumeriko, the witch girl, implied this would be an easy battle.

"This is my first time in this place. But no challenge in my life has ever been easy. I don't expect this to be any different," she replied.

Claw was more of a veteran and he just confirmed her suspicions.

"I would be insulted if this wasn't worth my time," she added. "I've trained all my life to be ready."

The heiress continued drinking her tea slowly, as if her cup could last for hours. She was still careful of arching her fingers like an old fashioned princess.

Remilia Scarlet; Or, Fight The Cosmos

As a denizen of Gensokyo, the realm of folklore and the forgotten, Remilia Scarlet might have fallen under the strange scientific sway of the Hilbert Effect.

Might.

Unfortunately, being both more real and considerably more ancient than most of the imagined stories about her bloodsucking kind, the vampire passed through the field like a bullet through paper. And as the red drilled through the purple-white without dimming, she finally resolved, a pink winged thing shedding motes of bloody light, and flashed KOS-MOS a triumphant smile.

I win, said the smile.

(I say seem, because it was at that very moment that she shattered both the sound barrier and her subsonic poise, and smacked face-first into the floor, and like a pillowy plough gouged a sloping furrow in the floor, before at last coming to a rumbling halt somewhere inside the floor.

This digression is not unimportant.)

Remilia's parasol, the only reminder of her former existence, stuck out from the devastated rubble like a plucked flower. It looked very confused.

Emiya; Bonfire - Or, Attack on Nitorious K

Emiya eyeballed the fish, eyeballed the fire, eyeballed everyone else around him, and then finally, with a sigh, eyeballed Nitori. It was not a hostile eyeball, but it did seem vaguely reluctant to dispense its attentions on another little girl.

"Do you want something?" he asked. "I have a lot of these to get through, and there's already too much chatter as it is."

Risinn

"Oh, I see! Yes, of course, that explains the ears..."

Risinn looked around at everyone present.

"You're a very varied group," she commented. "Where are you going next?"

Reimu

"You're welcome," Reimu murmured to those who thanked her, before sitting down by the fire, to sip her tea. Yes, this was the way things were supposed to be.

"That we'll meet the weak ones is natural," Reimu said to Sumireko's suggestion. "But like in the world we just departed, resistance will be stronger the closer we get to the Key we seek. That too is natural."

The Tower (Pokemon Group -> Tea Group)

As soon as the bags were put down, Nebby floated over and started looking them over. It didn't look the most enthused, but Lillie hoped it'd keep it occupied for a while. With that settled, Lillie followed Mother over to the tea group, although she tried to keep an eye on Nebby at the same time.

"Thank you...." she said to the older girl in the pretty red-and-white dress who was handing out the tea.

Then she took a sip herself. She swished it around her mouth a little before swallowing as she tried to get a feel for the flavor. Her first thought was that she would had preferred something a little sweeter, but on the other hand she couldn't say it was a bad flavor at all.

She nodded in response to Mother's words on the subject, before looking around at the other people present. She recognized Asgore and Claw from earlier; after all, it was hard to forget them, both for their appearances and for their contributions to the drama earlier. Besides them, there were two older men and quite a few girls apart from herself and the one who handed out the tea. Most of them were older than her, but the one in the military(?) outfit looked to be about her age.

It was certainly quite a group, and that was just counting them and not the other people who were currently doing other things. She had a good idea of why she herself was brought here, but she had to wonder about everyone else. What did the person running this challenge see in them?

The D

Again, as well as can be expected. The grand authoritarian waif was sated, curious even - for now, more importantly, that slow torture had ended. My private affairs were my own once again, so I believed, and was correct but for one unfortunate outlier;

Our dark lord of the hat, he of the flattened tone and hollow cheeks, he turned my way again as he left and said four words which sent through me the briefest of chills - people are not bread. I knew at once to what he referred, of course, but knew also there was no possible way that he could. That particular exchange had escaped my retelling entirely.

So, a psychic of some description, or perhaps an empath, or any number of synonyms with the same disastrous meaning; a reader of minds and revealer of secrets. The idea was not a pleasant one - a man's thoughts are his most private possessions - but there was a single logical saving grace; if he truly could see all in my memory and cared enough to act, the hammer of judgement would have come streaking down before I had begun to speak.No. Either his view was limited, or his motivation (perhaps merely his spite, though the two are often synonymous) was lacking -and by the look in his eye, the daggers, this particular pointed barb, he clearly held little in the way of sympathy.

Either he was blinkered, or simply lacked the sense to interpret. Neither of these was of particular comfort, but he seemed, at the very least, not to be an immediate threat. Again, a resounding and begrudging fine echoed through my soul. There was no helping this, and I'd weathered worse intrusions with no particular damage.

But lo, as I pondered, enter forth our ornate and talkative blackamoor, coat a-flutter and chains a-jingling in poorly communicated outrage. I'd never intended to placate him, for the simple reason he seemed (on a purely intuitive level) utterly impossible to placate - enough was never enough, of course, and even now he demanded that forgotten casus belli, desperate for the spark that might light my pyre. Jonathan's father, Jonathan's dog, Jonathan's girlfriend, any crime would fit.

Here, the tragedy; the hunt had been abandoned, the arbiter of good taste turned aside in wonderment. A single man makes for a sorry mob indeed. I imagined his delight at discovering he'd scored two out of three, and decided I would like to see it.

"His dog and his father," I said, brushing lightly past him. "His girlfriend survived the both of us."

See it from afar, I mean. Removing myself from this man's presence was quickly becoming a matter of sanity - I smelled something cooking, some kind of fish, and spied across the hall a bustling cookfire. The aroma was inviting enough, if not a siren-song then at least an instinctive lullaby. In truth I'd suffered a dreadful ennui of flavours some five years prior and had eaten scarcely a bite since, but this was as good an excuse as any.

As I homed in I saw someone had passed around tea, green and from a sturdy cylindrical cup, which made this an oriental affair. This, too, was inevitable. Ceremony attracts the Japanese like a candle attracts moths, and there are few dread spirits more meticulously placated than the meal of dinner. A time for friends, a time for gathering, all this hollow platitude. We were, in a sweet mercy, lacking the appropriate array of cutlery.

I settled crossed-legged beside what seemed the head chef, a tall and swarthy man wearing a tattered white cloak across his shoulders (he was turned away from me to adress some blue-haired and hamster-cheeked young girl-analogue - this will only matter in light of what came next), and waited quietly for something edible to transpire.

Weiss Schnee—Tea Group—Ice Tea.

The arrival of Lusamine and her daughter to the tea party didn't go unnoticed by the heiress.

"Is she your sister?" Weiss Asked Lusamine about Lillie. She sighed. "I am not sure how to feel about kids being brought here," She said bluntly, while shaking her head. The only thing that stopped her from crossing her arms was the tea that was still in her hands.

At least Tanya said she had some combat experience. The child soldier certainly looked the part. But Lillie seemed to be dressed more for taking vacations at a beach rather than being ready for whatever challenge lied ahead.

By the sound of what Claw described, it seemed like the worst was still to come.

"I mean no offense, but if our lives will be at risk, we will need to able to fight. Have you, at least, trained in a combat school before?" Weiss asked Lillie.
