Condemned by History cleanup thread

Go To

Condemned by History is a problem trope for many reasons. It leads to edit warring and confusion over what qualifies. In this thread we'll look for bad examples, and look for feedback. Here are the guidelines for this trope:

  1. The franchise has to be truly popular and loved at first. Things that are So Bad, It's Horrible don't count.
  2. Simply losing popularity isn't enough. We need to see an actual backlash, with liking it being considered bizarre. Otherwise, every not-so-famous film or concluded television series would be here.

Let's go!

Caillou also was never Barney-level popular. As for Dora, the mockery it gets seems relatively good-natured compared to the sort of deep hatred Barney inspired for a while.

I don't think Periphery Hatedom should ever be relevant to this.

Yeah, I'm not sure why adults hating on stupid kiddie shows would be relevant here.

I just added two new entries:

  • Brock Turner, the Stanford rapist. By making one incredibly stupid move, he made himself hated across the country.
  • Dani Mathers, the model who body shamed a naked woman online.

Are there any issues with either of these above two? If so, let me know.

Another DTD thing I was thinking. Many of Donald Trump's business legacies i.e. "The Apprentice" have been tainted by all the controversy he's been drumming up in his presidential campaign. Does anyone think he could fit here in some way?

[up] ...is that guy famous for anything other that being a rapist? If he's not a creator, he shouldn't be covered here and he's not DTD, just a criminal.

EDIT: Ah, I see he was a swimmer of some prominence before the crime. Carry on then.

A handful of other sports stars I thought of. Anyone else agree?

  • Johnny Manziel: His off-field life has been getting plenty of negative press. That Domestic abuse scandal if true is going to do him in for good.
  • Greg Oden: The next Sam Bowie; he is now remembered as "the guy drafted before Durant"
  • Ja Marcus Russell: An infamous #1 draft pick turned bust.
  • Gilbert Arenas: He kept guns in his locker room and everything went downhill.
  • Donald Sterling: He got banned from the NBA for life after his racist comments went public.
  • Tim Donaghy
  • Many of the Steroids-era MLB stars (A-Rod, Barry Bonds, Canseco)
  • Marion Jones

Other names

  • Don Imus
  • Rosie O'Donnell

[up] I vaguely recall something about an ESPN commentator who was banned for posting transphobic memes on Facebook. Would he count?

Somebody dummied out a steroid entry for Canseco and Rafael Palmeiro on the Sports page.

[tup] to Manziel and Russell. Darko Milicic anyone? He's the only one in his Top 5 draft class to not become an NBA superstar.

Amazing discovery

[up][up]Yeah Curt Schilling. He is best known, however, as a Baseball Player. His personal life has been weird lately, but I don't think there's been a career ending backlash.

Anyway, a few more sports names I thought of:

  • Tiger Woods? After his infidelity scandal in 2009 he's been pretty hated. I'm not sure if he's there yet or not.
  • John Rocker. If he watched his mouth, he'd be in a much better position.
  • Lenny Dykstra, anyone?
  • Tonya Harding?
  • Bonds? Clemens? Mc Gwire?
  • How about Ochocinco?

Shouldn't people be prioritizing trying to clean up the misuse than finding more possible examples? I mean, the purpose of this site really isn't to gloat over celebrities who have destroyed their careers.

Yeah, I never even thought of him given it is a 150 year old example. But I see what you're getting here. He was a well-known stage actor, but nowadays is known only for being Lincoln's assassin. Could you say the same about the play "Our American Cousin"? That is also only remembered in association with the assassination.

Fourthed.

For what it's worth, a particularly prickly example was removed from Walking with Dinosaurs.

Agreeing with previous sentiments; the focus of the thread should be to first prune the bad examples, then work in new ones.

So the HIMYM example got yanked, even though I think it's pretty viable.

Three people (including me) have looked at the hip-hop page so far. Can we please have another person look at it so we can reach a consensus?

Sorry for dropping g off the face of the earth, there was a death in the family.

I'll look at Hip Hop and should have a detailed report on Wednesday.

Have the other music pages we went over been cleaned?

[up] My condolences. sad

As for the other music pages, I think some examples (such as Lady Antebellum) failed to reach a consensus.

Right, I think it was Lady Antebellum, Jonas Brothers, and Avril Lavigne.

We were close to consensus on deleting Lady A and keeping Jo Bros. We were all over the place on Avril.

Given the amount of shoehorning and misuse, I'm thinking that we should take a similar tack to the Expy cleanup thread; if a consensus on "delete or keep" simply cannot be reached, err on the side of deleting.

Somebody added Butch Hartman back to the western animation page for similar reasons to Family Guy.

If a show is still on the air, would you consider it DTD?
