Condemned by History is a problem trope for many reasons. It leads to edit warring and confusion over what qualifies. In this thread we'll look for bad examples, and look for feedback. Here are the guidelines for this trope:

  1. The franchise has to be truly popular and loved at first. Things that are So Bad, It's Horrible don't count.
  2. Simply losing popularity isn't enough. We need to see an actual backlash, with liking it being considered bizarre. Otherwise, every not-so-famous film or concluded television series would be here.

Let's go!

Yeah, and even then, there are still enough Adventure fans that it fails the "universal backlash" test.

Yep, i'd say nothing from Sonic qualifies at DTD.

I dunno. Sonic 3 D Blast might count. It was a big deal when it first came out ("A Sonic game? IN 3D!?!?") but even then it came out at the tail end of the Genesis' life and wasn't the blockbuster the numbered games were.

I'm certainly not fighting for its inclusion.

The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy was added back to the Film page, without consulting the thread.

Now that it's over... it might qualify.

Definitely had the hugeness. Had a ginormous drop off in popularity. I know some people actively mock it and think it's bad, but they're probably the ones that disliked it in the first place. My ear is not to the ground well enough to know.

Does anyone know how well the ending was received? I think that might be a good place to start.

Generally very negative. The best reaction I've seen is "meh;" I haven't encountered anyone who flat-out liked it, and I've heard a number of HIMYM comparisons (i.e. the ending makes the whole thing a waste of time).

Can't say I know a lot about the series, but I've heard nothing good about it for a while, and it's always been going downhill since some time ago, and any shred of hope being crushed by the ending.

However, it's apparently still popular enough in Japan to get a live-action film adaptation, announced the same day the last chapter came out.

Though Japan also hated the ending from what I can tell.

Might still want to wait to see how that plays out, then. I don't think we're in a hurry to add "recent" examples, especially for a trope like this.

Agreed wholeheartedly.

That live-action adaptation will be telling. If it does well, then clearly it isn't DTD. If it fails to get off the ground, then we'll talk.

As I've said before, DTD can very much be a regional thing. Its success in Japan doesn't affect its perception in America (and vice versa).

Why was it removed? The only discussion I can find on it is a "Keep."

According to LTM 402: "No. Dixie Chicks are still popular, any hate for Maines' comment about Bush has long faded away among most and is considered Vindicated by History, and they are currently doing a US tour with excellent reception."

Yeah, they've got a tour going with around 40 stops in North America alone right now...far from being DTD.

Then yeah, that's a cut.

... can people maybe include links when they mention pages? It would simplify things just a bit.

HighCrate, do you plan on continuing your evaluation of the rock page? There's a lot of content on that page & I'm not familiar enough with the genre to tackle it myself.

Yeah, the Dixie Chicks/Bush thing is like Janet at the Super Bowl or Kanye's "Imma Let You Finish": an embarrassing moment that they may never live down but not something that single-handedly ruined their rep.

Spino— I can keep going with the Rock page but I won't have much time until next week at the earliest. If you'd like to deal with something you're more familiar with in the meantime, that's fine.

You know, I've always felt the Michelle Branch entry on the main DTD music page has always been rather odd. She's still well-liked, she merely faded into irrelevance rather than become universally hated, and yeah, that Maxim magazine shoot probably made her seem like a hypocrite but I don't think it made her universally hated. The same could be said about Ciara, and Jewel, they still have plenty of fans.

Her, especially! She still is looked fondly by many despite not having much radio airplay and her latest album not being a hit.
