Condemned by History is a problem trope for many reasons. It leads to edit warring and confusion over what qualifies. In this thread we'll look for bad examples, and look for feedback. Here are the guidelines for this trope:

  1. The franchise has to be truly popular and loved at first. Things that are So Bad, It's Horrible don't count.
  2. Simply losing popularity isn't enough. We need to see an actual backlash, with liking it being considered bizarre. Otherwise, every not-so-famous film or concluded television series would be here.

Let's go!

As of right now, Iggy and Soulja are the only rappers I feel are safe keeps. All the others are on the fence or firm cuts.

I no longer edit on TV Tropes but will continue as an occasional forum poster.

Okay, edited the main post. If someone said "unsure", I did not include it in the tally. The one abstain was Laptop Guy saying he was not going to vote on that particular option. Thank you all for letting me know what I missed - trawling through 200 posts on my phone and making those was not easy and I knew I missed a few things.

I want to do this weekly; it will be much easier to do now that the basic framework is taken care of.

My next post will be the rest of my hip hop recs, which I will then edit into the main Hip Hop post.

  • Black Eyed Peas: Cut, I hear I Gotta Feeling on the radio constantly. HOWEVER. I think the section on will.i.am should be broken out and made its own entry, because I definitely see his solo work counting.
  • B.o.B.: Cut. I had no idea about Flatline, and I assume most people see him as a one hit wonder.
  • Cee Lo Green: Cut. The ONLY reason I say this is because Crazy is commonly cited as one of the best songs of the 2000s and still played. This may be an issue we need to discuss tho - Cee Lo was part of Gnarls Barkley when he sang Crazy. It's a Jonas Brothers thing again, and we may need clarification on how we handle these cases.
  • DMX: Keep. Jokes about how often he's in jail are rather pervasive in my circles XD
  • Far East Movement: I'm surprised this is garnering so much discussion, bc I see it as a cut and dry one hit wonder. Cut.
  • Ja Rule: Cut.
  • J-Kwon: Cut.
  • Kreayshawn: Keep. Gucci Gucci went completely viral and went Gold in the US, as well as being an international hit. Get Hard also had solid underground buzz. The whole "only sold at Hot Topic" LITERALLY ruined her career. She admits now her career was a mistake. I know that one hit wonders need some sort of extreme circumstance, but I feel like shooting yourself in the foot THAT BADLY is enough of a mitigating factor to call her a keep. Nathan Rabin recently reviewed Kreayshawn's album, and while he didn't think it was good, he definitely brought up that most people only remember that the album sold so badly bc of an intentional marketing decision.
  • Lil Kim: As I mentioned in the master post, she is one of the most famous female M Cs of all time. Might as well put Madonna as DTD! Cut.
  • LMFAO: Cut. Noteworthy is that the only real big sketch show that tackled them, Key and Peele, didn't mock them so much as portray them as tragic jesters stuck in a Neverending party hell.
  • MC Hammer: We need to discuss Adam Westing as it relates to DTD.
  • Mac Miller: cut.
  • Mike Jones: cut.
  • Mystikal: keep. One thing the entry doesn't mention, and that is integral to his positioning as DTD, is that the reason Danger came back to prominence was because John Oliver used it extensively to mock Anthony Weiner, a disgraced sex offender US Congressman. (John Oliver, for those outside the states, is basically the heir apparent to Jon Stewart.) The song was used because, and this is 100% true, Anthony Weiner called himself Carlos Danger during his sexcapades. There is literally nothing flattering about the song usage, and the song is far more associated with Oliver (and the delightful dance he did to it) than Mystikal. That is really the only reason he got the Mark Ronson song... and that song tanked, with the comments on the AV Club about Mystikal's performance of the Ronson song on SNL all mentioning either Oliver or his sex offenses.
  • Nelly: This is another entry that neglects to mention a huge part of the DTD status Nelly had - the song "Tip Drill". Before Tip Drill, Nelly was known for his female - friendly lyrics, respectful demeanor, and club hits. Tip Drill was misogynistic, with a very gross video, and his female fans - and the media - were appalled. A US college managed to get him barred from speaking about his charity there based on that video alone. That destroyed his career. Now, I think he doesn't really count, given that he had a resurgence as a rapper in country music, of all the things. I lean cut.
  • Sean P - fuck it we figured Sean Paul out ages ago.
  • Soulja Boy: keep.
  • T-Pain: keep. Even if I love T-Pain. "I FUCKED A MERMAAAAAAAAID"
  • Vanilla Ice: Adam Westing decision.
  • Rap Rivalry: This is in such poor taste as an entry. Cut.
  • Scott Storch: I'm really conflicted on this one and will defer to the majority.
  • No Limit: Cut. I genuinely only remember their weird pants they sold.

[up] Eh, I think we can keep CeeLo if we emphasize the distinction between his solo career & Gnarls Barkley (as we did with the JoBros). CeeLo Green (the performer) is firmly DTD, but Gnarls Barkley (the duo) & "Crazy" (the song) isn't.

I'm also not sure where you got B.o.B. as a one-hit wonder from; "Nothin' on You" isn't quite as iconic as "Airplanes", but it's still considered a classic.

[up] I can agree with this for Cee Lo, but we never really came to an official decision on the Jonas Brothers.

Also, when I think of "Nothing on You", I think of my man Bruno Mars. Bruno for life! But that is a pretty big oversight on my part. It doesn't change my decision to cut B.o.B. He has two stone cold classics under his belt!

You make good points above. My only issue, however, is with Kreayshawn. Her album was exclusive to Hot Topic as a physical release. It was still available on iTunes. With the rise of digital sales, this was a footnote at best. Most people didn't really care about her album as they saw her as little more than a one-hit wonder. U2's release a couple of years ago, where their album was automatically downloaded onto every iPhone and people had trouble deleting it, was a lot worse than a decision to only sell your physical album at one location. And look! They're still one of the most legendary bands of all time. Kreayshawn had no legacy to begin with. I vote cut on Kreayshawn. Her case for DTD is not even comparable to Azaelia Banks', let alone Iggy Azalea's.

Also, in regards to Cee-Lo, "Forget You" is also a classic as well. If Cee-Lo was truly DTD, don't you think that song would have had its reputation tarnished as well? He screams more of a Tyson Zone kind of guy a la Chris Brown than a true case of DTD.

Finally, I change my vote to keep for Mystikal. The John Oliver thing was a huge oversight on my part — actually I never even knew about it in the first place. If that brought him back into the public eye then it most likely increased awareness of his crime. One thing in defense of him, though — The Ronson song flopping had less to do with Mystikal being on it than just being swallowed up by the monster hit that came before it.

[up] I don't remember the last time anyone mentioned "Forget You" without also mentioning his rape comments, so its reputation has arguably been tarnished.

Also, I forgot to mention earlier that BigBertha voted to keep Akon.

I argued earlier that Avril Lavigne should probably be cut based on the ratings of her latest album. I know little about her or her music, but she seems to still be charting just fine, with two entries reaching the top 20. The album itself reached #5 on the Billboard 200.

Maybe that's an underestimate of radio playlists. When I dropped "station playlist" from my Google search, the results skyrocketed.

Yeah, since I got no results for Lostprophets, they're staying. John Robbins from Radio X explained on Adam Buxton's podcast that the band was blacklisted, and if they play any of their songs they'll be fined. https://www.acast.com/adambuxton/ep.23-johnrobins

Yeah, reading the Wikipedia page for the Lostprophets singer made me ill. Without getting into too much detail, there is absolutely no way that isn't a keep.

Still, it's a rotten shame that their "Somedays" music video will never see the light of day. All their You Tube comments are disabled.

If you wonder why I keep insisting that "I Knew You Were Trouble" is by Lostprophets, just read this fanfic. (chapters 4, 11, 13)

Cartoonist Butch Hartman has a very long, badly-written entry on the Western Animation page with no less than seven(!) line breaks. I can't imagine that went through here.
