Honestly, when I generally see characters literally inside a computer it tends to be in film, television, or comic books. It's rare in video games unless there's a shrinking plot.

So what do we wanna do with this?

I was thinking split them into their base but not exclusive elements.

  • Inside a physical computer, shrunk down and such inside a computer. Often a Video game level, but used elsewhere
  • Trapped in a Video Game, cover those trapped in a game or MMO. Sister trope to Trapped in TV Land
  • Cyberspace or Inside RAM and such, literally digitized and are part of cyberspace. Often works will project programs as avatars and such in the internet. This could cover single computers that predate the internet like Tron but also things like The Matrix.

[up][up][up]For clarification, the distinction I was making is a world outside our own, in contrast with a world inside our own. I think you are right about all that.

[up][up]I could swear I've seen motherboards in a hundred casual video games. But most of those don't have a humanoid character in the traditional sense.

[up]I think first, we can all agree that Myself, My Avatar can be cut. I think a motion to do so should be added to any crowner.

Your proposed organisation I am not sure of. To be redundant, not really feeling getting shrunk down and walking on a motherboard. Plus, you are not covering the vr helmet, and the vr suit, which are all over the place in science fiction.

I also note that you dropped the internet of the future thing, although I wasn't really feeling that one either. I think the essential idea is sufficiently covered by The Alternet.

[up] Yeah that can probably be cut or at least rebranded into something more like it's name.

'An avatar that is exactly what the person is on the outside', something that is not standard in real life but a common media thing to show who is who.

Its something that gets discussed in shows like Netoge No Yome Wa Onna No Ko Ja Nai To Omotta where someone doesn't do that or Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth where account traders and hijackers take people's visual data and use it.

And we have brought up several examples in the thread for inside of computers so its worthy of at least clearing it up for a YKTTW.

If you guys talking about "walking inside a computer's hardware", maybe that can be broadened to other machines too?

Otherwise yeah, Cyberspace seems to be the underlying concept.
