Changing it to Hand Gagging and making the current name a redirect sounds like the best course of action. It is short and to the point while being gender-neutral, since this trope is applied to both sexes.

Sounds good to me. Hand Gagging is reasonably clear, and the current name is unduly long. The gender-neutral version of the current name is also a redirect.

I also think Hand Gagging is a fine name. The best that can be said for "Putting A Hand Over His Mouth" is that it's not only descriptive, but has a YKTTW-original ring to it. The "noun verbs thingy" renames Trope Repair Shop has too often settled for have advanced Gender Neutral Writing at the expense of poor grammar and clumsy style.

The One Who Tropes made the swap. A bunch of redirects still remain that probably need to be re-redirected, and there are a 63 left for the original name.
Also, the related tab for Hand Gagging isn't showing that Putting a Hand over His Mouth is a redirect, even though it is.

except there's a bug where the redirects don't change over, so you have to go to the redirects page to find out where it's going. They all point at Hand Gagging. I was more concerned about making the indices correct than anything else at first, then others are done later. Will finish this now, or tomorrow evening. (it's 2 minutes to midnight here.)

Right, a thousand inbounds is too much for a cut. Mod, this thread is ready for closing.
It's not an ambiguous but an overlong name which is gender-specific on top. There is a redirect Hand Gagging which I prefer and would like to make the main trope page with a redirect to Putting a Hand over His Mouth. Would do the cross-wicking myself but I was told to go through TSR first for approval.
