Oh! Finally, she remembered! She met Vince before when—

Just as the words rose to the tip of Seilaan's tongue, they fell away. Her lips were still slightly parted as if about to speak, but her face was curiously blank.

And she'd forgotten again already. Strange. What was this ache in her chest?

Part of me is definitely trying to hide something from the rest. Am I going to regret finding out what this thing is?

She suddenly found herself holding a handle-less teacup and drinking pensively. Perfect temperature, strong flavor, just the right amount of bitterness. The rest of the white porcelain tea set was innocently sitting on the floor next to her chair, the other two cups empty. "No, I don't believe this has happened to be before, but then again, I tend not to remember my dreams at all. What little does happen to stick with me is just a mishmash of nonsense. Even with the sudden appearance of the tea set here, this dream has been rather mundane in comparison so far."

"I am sorry, but I cannot agree to that," The Warden replied to Lauren. "I have dedicated my life to protecting others. Defending myself is secondary to defending others. However, I will concede that you all seem capable enough in combat, and should the situation arise, I promise not to interfere in your business until my help is needed."

She then turned her attention to Dives, who was carving something out of wood. "Might I ask what it is you are making, Dives? Perhaps, a makeshift spear with which to stab at the heart of your enemies?" The enthusiasm in the last sentence was unnerving to say the least.

Dives was less surprised by the Warden's enthusiasm and was more caught off guard by her change of attitude. Regardless, the Argonian would elaborate.

"I am making a bow. I would prefer to have my personal bow with me, but I don't, so I improvise. My grandfather," they paused as they scrapped a large piece of wood off the branch, "Taught me all the tricks of bowcraft. I mean, he was a Bosmer, so that helped."

Dives kept carving at the branch. They knew that they would need arrows later, but they needed to find some feathers to fletch them. Dives would just have to wait and see.

[The Blackwood]

The Dark Caller looked toward Nick, "I reign only over the Blackwood, but I exist in this realm awake and in a physical form, while all others are dreaming embodiments of themselves. The Blackwood of this dream world is merely a small fraction of the true Blackwood, that will eventually swallow this dream world as it slowly converts it into a part of the Blackwood. All the dreamers in this world will awaken before it happens, but it WILL happen."

The Dark Caller heard Yamiko's thoughts, addressing only her mind, Is there something you wish to communicate mortal child?

"Okay. Oookay. Now that was weird. I mean, we all saw that, right?" The other girls nodded and shrugged their shoulders at Danielle's comment.

"Yeah, there seems to be something not right about that girl, but what can you do?"

Olivia sneezed briefly. Apparently, she was allergic to dream pollen as well as the real thing. "Sorry about that. I recall you said most of your adventures are confined to the financial pages. You a billionaire or something?" Not that she'd mind if he was; not all the superrich were in the Molly Richardson vein, thinking magic was something you could buy.

Demo's now-concealed face turned to The Warden.

"We ain't in some Shakespeare play lass," he said bluntly. "No need fer the noble hero talk."

Saying that, Demo quickly glanced around. So there was one fighter with a glock, another with a sword, and another with a half-made bow and no arrows. In terms of combat readiness, he was the only one who could kill anything bigger than a particularly incensed dog.

He heaved a sigh at the thought, though it was muffled by his helmet.

"So, what're we lookin' for again? Warden said she was lookin' fer some sort of temple?" he asked. Flipping the face cover of his helmet up a bit, he took another drink before flipping it back down.

[Orange Tree Garden —> Fog]

Celso responded to Olivia's question with a nod of confirmation. "Yes; CEO of LaboratĂłrio Pereira-Merquior, but that's not important right now." He looked towards the fog, where Miyuki had vanished. "I don't think she understands this place... and I don't know how much longer that daemon can or will protect her." He shook his head and, after checking once more for his pistol, followed Miyuki.

Maybe he finds Miyuki, according to Blackfire's whims — if not, I'll figure something else out.

[Blackwood]

Nick almost choked on his drink when he heard the last part. He hoped that he could wake up soon, just so he wouldn't be here when the Blackwood came one with the Dream realm.

"Uh..." he said rather nervously, "W-Well good luck with that."

Aren't you a smart one. Nick thought to himself, What a stupid fucking thing to say.

He nervously eyed his new companions, unsure what else he wanted to do or say. Now he really wanted to leave this place more than ever, but he wanted to do it without making the Dark Caller mad. That could in no way go over well.

Instead, he quietly chugged down his tea.

[Farm - Barn (Mazra, Seilaan, Vince)]

Mazra considered both responses for a moment. She decided not to point out that neither had quite gotten around to answering her original question. "Well, I don't remember all of my dreams either, but I think that's kind of normal. This isn't really normal." She frowned. "It's not like most of the dreams I do remember, either, though I do usually know I am dreaming in them. But those are usually more about adventures and stuff, when they make sense." She glanced down at the field-sword hilt hanging from her jacket, then pulled a face. "This is just... a forest with too much water vapor. Or something. Not very exciting."

She perked up a little, though as first a large animal - I think it's a horse? - poked its head in the barn, then a tea set suddenly poofed into existence by Seilaan. Or so she said; Mazra hadn't actually seen it happen, but she didn't doubt her, especially since Seilaan was seeming more and more like a pretty serious person.

She turned to look at the younger girl. "Hey, um, were you thinking about tea just then? I'm sort of wondering now, since Doct- Vince was just talking about there not being animals and now there are some." She looked up and smiled. "I wonder if I should try thinking about a large berry pie..."

[Ritter Clinic]

Iveya couldn't help herself, as she disdainfully muttered, "...outlanders." It was well known they couldn't hold their alcohol, and apparently their frailty applied to other substances as well. Oh, sure, morphine addiction was also a problem in Uel, but it wasn't as prominent as these two made it sound in their lands! (More generally Iveya assumed anything bad she heard about other nations was a scourge upon their society, and everything bad about Uel was a minor nuisance in an otherwise optimal society. She'd not really gotten to questioning Magocracy propaganda yet.)

That aside, Iveya looked out the window and shook her head. "Tea would be wonderful," she said, with a polite smile. "I could do with something warm after that." As for the goat... she had not the slightest clue what a goat was, but would rather find out and play along than admit this.

"If you feel like calling me 'Doctor Acquati', I don't have a problem with it. I like to present options, I never know how formal you interdimensional folk feel like being," Vince said, looking contentedly at the little tea set. In fact... it didn't make much sense. If he didn't want someone to use that title, he wouldn't have said it. Like his other title.

"And... good observation, but I haven't actually been thinking much about my animals at all. Wasn't even talking about them when these wyverns appeared," he said as he looked to the one cuddled up against Seilaan, and to the roost. "Not a fan of tea, but coffee would sure be nice..." He trailed off, listening to his horse eat. Nilas almost killed him he didn't know how many times... made him almost thankful she put him in the infirmary, where he caught that ear infection that messed up his balance for so many years. He couldn't be up too high off the ground or he'd get vertigo, but at least he didn't have to deal with that damn horse?

That's right, he almost forgot. "...Oh, Miss Ren. I believe you visited my house once. We shared a few pots of coffee and talked a lot."

The wyvern with Seilaan raised its head in surprise when it noticed a steaming pot of funny-smelling water right below it. Goodness, those fumes... how could she put that in her body?! She seemed really happy about it, too. Humans are weird. Did the boss have any ideas...? The larger wyvern was leaning forward off the edge of the roost as far as it could without falling off, trying figure out the tea set with just its tongue and failing completely. So the little wyvern was on its own here.

What time is it? It's introducing new location time! And possibly new character. I also think it's time for the Forest of Distortion to disappear, since nobody's currently in it anyway.

The Forest -> Misery Manor

Darkness was continuing to fall about the forest. And in this particular region of it, death and despair began to spread. Trees wilted and shed their leaves. The mist itself became still and solemn, until it faded away to ash that fell to the floor and got absorbed into the soil. And from this soil, spiders emerged. Hundreds of little spiders that all crawled to the center of this desolate area, climbing up some of the dead trees nearby. And then they stopped, and merged with the trees themselves. The trees bent inward and merged together, forming a dark mass, which then formed into a black mist.

From this mist, a house emerged. It was large, on the scale of a mansion, but old and abandoned, with ivy climbing up the rotting wooden walls and reaching through the shattered windows. And yet, the house stood up marvelously, showing no sign of its central structure falling apart. And then there was the front door, heavy and creaky, which stood strong in its frame, even though the lock had long since been broken. Anyone could enter... if they dared.

In front of this door, on a mushroom-infested bench on the old creaky front porch, sat a tired-looking witch, her robes and tall pointed hat black and tattered, her hair equally so, her eyes droopy and saggy on her otherwise youthful face. The clammy fingers of her right hand gripped her staff firmly planted on the floorboard, the skull dangling from the wooden ring hanging from it slowly rocking in its place.

Through the blood-red irises of her tired eyes, she surveyed the dead trees before her, and the mists surrounding the live trees beyond them. As she rotated the staff in her fingers, the black feathers hanging from the bottom of the ring at the top wavered through the heavy air.

"I am Sinistrina von Schwarzwald," she spoke, her voice immeasurably solemn, "and this is my realm. I stand before Misery Manor, which I am doomed to protect. This place remains lonely, and a part of me wishes for it to remain so."

The Blackwood (The Elemental Guardians, Nick, Fawn, Dark Caller)

Gon spat out his current bite of curry chicken salad when the Dark Caller mentioned the Blackwood enveloping this dream world. Nick's nervousness was perfectly understandable.

"Oh my god, he's trying to take over the world!"

"The dream world at least," Yamiko added with a shrug.

"Yeah, but don't you see? The Dark Caller just said it himself!" He made a hand gesture to the leader of the ravens, then turned to face him. "Why would you do something like that? Even if everyone does leave this dream world, if the Blackwood takes over it, how will that affect people's ability to dream? If this is the dream world, doesn't it mean that everyone will dream of the Blackwood from then on?"

"Oh come on," Phoebe scoffed, "I highly doubt he actually has the power to take over the entire dream world. What, are there like seven billion people on the planet? That's a lotta dreams."

"Hmm, I do wonder," Ashleigh mentioned, leaning back in her chair and looking up into the blackness. "I do believe we may have stumbled upon a nightmare. Perhaps the very personification of one. And yet it's odd. He doesn't... seem to want to destroy us or anything."

Lorraine, meanwhile, was laughing hysterically. Even more so when she looked over at Yamiko who was feeling a bit uncomfortable, yet at the same time strangely awed. Her Keeper was gazing in hesitant wonder at the Dark Caller.

This is telepathy... she thought. I've... I've always been curious about how it works... I digress. And no, there is nothing in... particular which I wish to... She was unsure of herself. She gazed once more at the wine bottle sitting on the table... and slowly reached over to pick it up.

"Kind of strange that this is here," she noted while inspecting the bottle. "Unless either Fawn or Nick likes wine... which I doubt... I-I-I guess if we really are in a dream, all sorts of things can manifest from our subconscious." She took a moment to inspect more of the food and drink on the table. "Hmm. Just him then." She looked around the clearing some more, but saw nothing but Lorraine's will-o-wisps.

"You're not talking about Lupin, aren't you?" Lorraine teased with a giggle. "Kind of strange that he's not here, isn't it?" Below her, Yamiko blushed and sank down in her chair.

[The Forest] (Warden, Demo, Dives, Lauren and Moreena)

Moreena silently slithered away through the air towards the origin of the sound she'd heard, her individual tendrils taking different routes between the trees before meeting up again.

Eventually, she discovered a group of four little mortals. Two human females, - one in a badly damaged business suit and the other in armor - a one-eyed human male with a grenade launcher, and a reptilian person wearing elaborate warpaint. Quite an odd combination. Had she perhaps ended up in one of those worlds again?

She pulled herself together into a shape only about three or four meters across, and hovered over towards the group, stopped, and simply floated there for some time, somehow staring at them despite her current lack of eyes.

Still a great "screw depression" song even after seven years.

Caleb reached out and started to follow Miyuki and Celso, but looked back at the dragon's daughters. With (what he believed to be) eidolons as strong as they say he knew rationally they could handle themselves and there apparently weren't any slayers around, but they were still very young, or at least seemed to be.

"Listen" he told them, "give me a moment and I can find out what's around here. I didn't earlier because didn't want bandits and such to notice me but that's less of a problem than I thought now."

The Blackwoods - Fawn, strange videogame characters, Nick, Dark Caller

Fawn ate her brunch happily, listening in to all the conversations happening around her. She turned to Phoebe who commented on her pancakes and smiled lightly. "Yeah, they're pretty delicious." she replied and had finished her meal and laid back, feeling very full. The Dark Caller's story about how the dream world had areas based on people's dreams shocked her and made her think. What if there was a dream world for her somewhere? She wondered what it would look like. Perhaps a news studio with her reporting on the news. Or a comic book scene with her as the reporter talking about the hero.

The dark brunette listened to Nick's conversation with the Dark Caller and her eyes widened in fright. The Dark Caller was trying to make everything into his little realm. She wanted to ask why he would do such a thing but someone beat her to it. Why turn everything into this nightmarish realm? What if people were living here? What would happen to all their dreams? These questions ran through her mind and she waited with baited breath to hear the answers from the strange figure who invited them all to eat.

"Or, you could let me handle the scouting. I think I'd be better at it. Shall I?"

"Go ahead. It's not like telling you no ever did anything."

Charlotte stepped aside, raised her right hand to the sky, and cried out, "Dragon wings, lift my heart! There was a brilliant flash of blue light, and when it subsided, Charlotte was standing in a full-blown superhero costume. Blue boots and gloves, a long blue skirt with sapphires embedded in it, a white top with a blue dragon wing emblem on it, a blue cape, and a gold tiara with a sapphire on it. She also carried a bow, but curiously, no quiver or arrows.

Compared to all that, the four-foot blue wings now sprouting from her shoulders could almost be considered secondary. Almost.

Two quick flaps and she was well in the air; three more and she was high enough to get a good view. Unfortunately, there was one minor detail that she hadn't thought of.

"I can't see anything, this fog's too thick, and there's too much of it for me to move. Don't think Danielle could burn it off, either. If we're going to find out what's out here, we'll have to do it the old-fashioned way." Charlotte pulled herself into a dive, and delicately landed back with her friends. "Like I said, under normal circumstances, I'm pretty good at scouting.

"That's no ordinary eidolon" Caleb thought aloud, "after everything that happened today I really shouldn't be surprised."

"I can search through the the fog, I just need a few seconds." Caleb reached out for the tree and leant on it. Then he sent out his eidolon. At first he seemed to just be breathing out rather forcefully; but even after he should have emptied his lungs he kept going. Close observers would see that he was no longer expelling air, but something else.

As his eidolon spread he could feel the grass, plants, and the gasses of the air. He shaped it, directing it around in a circular motion. He noticed Miuyki and Celso's locations, what seemed like some travelers, and two buildings, one with with vines growing on it. With this information he inhaled the eidolon and addressed the others, "okay, so we have two places nearby we can check out though one feels significantly older than the other. There are also some people around but I think they're armed."

Edit: (forgot to mention, his "veins" we're also glowing really brightly when he was doing that.)

So the guy was already dependent? Good grief. "Well, Henry, we seem to be in the forest by Andelin, the town where I live and work. My house is usually not all the way out here by the river, but I'm not going to go see what happened to the rest of the town with so much snow outside." He didn't seem terribly bothered by this. "I don't like snow. Winter in general, really. The cold is bothersome, and...."

The sentence was never finished.

He sharply turned his head to Iveya when he thought he heard her mutter something, but he didn't quite catch it. Something about her tone told him that he wasn't meant to.

"Something I always told my kids when they were growing up," he said lightly, turning back to the window, "If you're not ready to have it heard, don't say it. House rules."

Part of him knew that speaking this way to an adult was probably a one-way ticket to a fight, but he was ready. It was a house rule for a reason, and that reason was he fucking hated it.

"I don't believe I was explicitly thinking about tea, but I do very much like to have some tea or coffee when I'm troubled by something, and I am rather troubled right now. Because although what you say, Vince, does bring back enough details for me to guess at the whole picture, something crucial is missing. Yes, my boyfriend and I visited your home, toured your lab, and I enjoyed some excellent coffee. The funny thing is, that's all I remember of my experience, and I wouldn't have remembered anything at all without your prompting."

Seilaan idly swirled the tea in her cup, studying Mazra carefully. She was not, as Seilaan had previously feared, an unpleasant person, which was the impression that her voice had given her earlier. However, it was still too early to tell if she liked Mazra or not. "So you're usually aware that you're dreaming? Hm. I tend to be aware during nightmares specifically. Not that it makes them any easier. Truly, your mind can be your own worst enemy." She was quite sure that her great need of control to feel secure was what made being aware but helpless during a nightmare so unbearable. Ignorance was bliss, after all.

... then shouldn't this place be making her anxious? She had no idea how anything worked around here, and other people could influence the environment as well. Even as her worry slipped away, she tried to hold on. She had to figure things out. She had to know what brought her here.

The Uelane tendency to solve issues with fists was primarily tempered by the long, sometimes arbitrary, occasionally hypocritical codes of conduct that kept their murder and violence rates down to a manageable (but, by 21st century Western standards, still appalling) level. The second one won out this time.

"Excu..." Iveya began with a snarl, before remembering herself. She owed Ritter her life, and was a guest in his home. She had overstepped her place, and he had responded in a way that normally would have gotten him a magically imbued palm between his eyes, but was permissible in this particular set of circumstances. Barely permissible; ulon'Uelshu, Iveya recalled, would have tossed Friedrich out a window. She cleared her throat, and said, "I... fear the cold has made me quite irritable. Apologies, Mr. Ritter..." and here, Iveya herself failed to resist the temptation to toe the lines of what was permitted, "though I must politely ask you not take that particular tone with me again."

Both Henry and Friedrich might note an extremely brief, passing sense that some predator was in the room. Just for the tiniest fraction of a second. Probably nothing to worry about; misfiring neurons, stress, tiredness, a side-effect of the morphine, something about this strange realm. There were a million perfectly logical explanation for the tiny, momentary discomfort.

"But, anyways, Henry," Iveya said, hurriedly and awkwardly changing the topic, "you mentioned you were trying to cross dimensions. Did you have a particular destination in mind? I imagine it can't have been being violently dropped into a snow storm."

Mazra frowned at Seilaan. "I don't get it. Nightmares aren't real, any more than dreams are. If you know you're having one, wouldn't that make you feel safer?"

She shrugged. "Not that I'd know that much. I don't usually remember my nightmares."

For just a split-second, the half-visible image of a middle-aged woman with facial features very like Mazra's, but with longer and lighter-colored hair, appeared behind her. Then it flickered like a candle flame and vanished. Mazra didn't seem to notice.

Abruptly, she stood up. "Right, so I want to try seeing if I can affect this place with my thoughts." The theory had taken a hit, but hey, it wasn't like she had anything to lose by trying. Well, mostly. "But it might be better to try that outside..." She trailed off, as something Seilaan had said suddenly made an impact. "Hold on, are you saying you have amnesia? Like, um, in an opera or something?"

She walked towards the wyvern that was leaning off the roost, not quite sure if she should help it try the tea or not.

[farm - Vince, Mazra, Seilaan]

How could a nightmare possibly be worse than a dream if you're aware that both aren't real...? But she just explained that- knowing your mind made it up and is forcing you to experience something awful can be miles worse than random tragedy. Vince opened his mouth to speak, only to be stopped by the sudden appearance of... a woman, behind Mazra. He could usually sense such things before they occurred, but this was the dream's doing, so he gasped lightly, his right hand jumping to the outside of his thigh. Given the roosting wyvern's violent, talons-on-wood scraping reaction, the wyvern next to Seilaan would have certainly made her spill her tea had it been paying attention.

Continuing on without even noticing, she brought up trying to control her dream outside. He offered a short nod to this, and one of his translucent-green psychic arms almost extended into Mazra's view to slide the door open before she cut him off again.

Was amnesia a common plot device in operas from her world, or something? Like how being lost at sea is in Tefurean operas? Either way... he turned to Seilaan. "Miss Ren, I don't believe amnesia's quite the word... more like some things just slipped your mind, right?"

[Orange Tree Garden/Fog] >>> [Wasteland]

The earth is scorched, dusty and red. A harsh wind screams across the desolate landscape, whipping through distant canyons and weaving around the loose myriad of tent rocks/hoodoos that dot the land for as far as the eye. The smokey, gray clouds overhead have little effect on the sweltering, dry heat that permeates the air, and even when the vaguely red-tinted sun in the orange-brown sky is completely covered, one's skin is still burning. There is a cloud of dust on the horizon, and it seems to be getting closer.

Those who wished to follow Miyuki would find her here, still accompanied by her shadowy follower, curled and stiff - frightened, by the looks of things - sitting in the oddly-shaped shade cast by one of the many hoodoos.

Not entirely dead.

Danielle's eyes widened just a hair when Caleb started showing off his own magic. "I'm impressed by that little display. All the magic users I've ever seen can only do the big, flashy stuff. Subtle magic like that... mind if ask how you do that?"

As for where to go, the girls had an answer for that, at least. "Let's stick with the unarmed group for the time being. I don't want to be around anyone with weapons. If there's a misunderstanding, a lack of weaponry will prevent bloodshed from being too bad."

"I agree. While Amy could patch anyone up if things got out of hand, she's not the best at it. Let's just say she's got a limit and leave it go there."

Amy glanced at the still transformed Charlotte. "You might want to change back. Our look does tend to draw attention, even if we are on the heroic side."

A snap of her fingers, and Charlotte was back to normal. "Better?"

"Much."

Forward, boys! For God's sake, forward!

[Forest]

"It can't be any worse than what I do on a daily basis. Dungeon diving is a bit of a specialty of mine," There was pride in Dives's voice, "I do think we should prepare a little more though. No need to go into a dungeon with just the clothing on our backs unless we want to end up dead. I suggest we rest and gather any supplies we could use or need."

Dives keep carving at the stick until it was shaped into a crude but working bow. Pulling out a thread of string from the fur armor underwear that Dives was wearing, they cut it off with the rock and tied it to the bow. Giving it a few plucks, Dives smiled.

"Just as Grandpa taught me."

[The Blackwood]

The Dark Caller glared at Gon, "When this forest is converted into a part of the true Blackwood, it will no longer exist as a dream world. Mortals will no longer dream within it. There are also multiple dream worlds that take multiple forms, one out of many is nothing. As for why," the Dark Caller pondered if telling them was really a good idea, "I don't have to answer to mortals on what I choose to do."

It looked at Ashleigh, "I haven't harmed you because I can't. Similarly, you mortals are unable to harm me. I have stated multiple times that I am physically within this realm while you exist as dreaming embodiments. Any harm I could direct toward you would pass through you and any attack against me would also be null and void."

The Dark Caller looked at the group and then continued, "The reason you eat the food before you, is because I allow the dream world the most minimal influence. If I so desired, I could turn it to dust before you, or worms in your bellies." The Dark Caller gave that a moment to sink in, "Now, it is incredibly rude of me to threaten my guests. Shall we have pleasant conversation again?"

[Blackwood]

Nick nervously sunk in his chair, feeling sick at the idea that this...thing could possibly turn his food into worms. He wanted to stay on it's good side until they left, so he cleared his throat and tried his very best to give a convincing fake smile.

"Sorry! Sorry..." he said, "My friends are just a little nervous, that's all. But I'm sure we can...uh...have more pleasant talks like...uh..."

He didn't know what else to say. What could he possibly say after that whole display? Nothing too helpful, or something that wouldn't sound really stupid and make the creature even more angry. The only thing he could think of at the moment was asking more questions. Questions that he hoped wouldn't be too personal.

"...So, I-I'm still confused." he finally said, "This part isn't the dream world, but things from it linger here? Are we one of them?"

Now that, besides all his fear of the Blackwood, was something he was honestly curiously about. He wondered how much else of Blackwood he and his companions managed to dream up, if they even did. That, and he secretly wondered if the food they were eating was actually real—as real as it could be in a place like this.
