Creed's a bit too "baity" to be a winner IMO.
That's a bad reason for not nominating it.
"I'm also a bit miffed Star Wars didn't get a Best Picture nod. "
Why? It wasn't that good. In fact, a week later I forgot it existed.
Just got my For Your Consideration DVD of Room. Now I get to see what the fuss is about. If I see Tommy Wiseau, I'm ejecting immediately, though.
Isn't James Franco making a movie about The Room?

I recently watched it and while I think that the first half was stronger than the second, it was pretty good.
The new SW doesn't stand on it's own, by design. Academy looks poorly on that. Always has.
I, for one, will stupidly and overoptimistcally root for Fury Road to get Best Picture and Best Director.
Leo gets best actor, Sly gets best supporting. SW will win whatever it has been nominated for, but Fury Road sweeps all the technicals (with a possible upset from Sicario on cinematography, but by no means certain).

Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...Didn't Return of the King get Best Picture? That was totally a sequel.
That was more as a prize for the whole trilogy. Along with the whole sweep that year.
EDIT- Indeed, thats why I think they'll award SW with it once Disney finishes the trilogy here too.

Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...PS. With Jackson's recent output, a lot of voters I know regret voting for it.
The awards for Return of the King was more for the whole trilogy, which still stands as an impressive feat of cinema even if none of them were the absolute best movie of the year.
If Fury Road wins Best Picture, I will party like no tomorrow. Finally, an action sci-fi film that wins the Award.
While it may not be my favorite action film of the decade so far, it's definitely up there. And if it doesn't win, then I hope The Martian gets it, for not being overly depressing and also being a sci-fi film.
I very coincidentally just read the book Room was based on.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonThat's right. It's a "feel good" movie, I think. It certainly made me feel better when I first saw it.
I like to keep my audience riveted. They oughta just give every single award to Fantastic Four and call it a day.
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!Fury Road is also a Feel Good movie too. It's by far the happiest ending of any of the series.
Why do people give the Oscars so much attention if everyone knows its just a bunch of snobby white 60yo's deciding what movie is 'objectively better' even if they haven't seen every movie contending in every category? We all know what the Academy likes at this point- why do we give their opinion so much weight?
Because it's been around since the 30s and because it still has the participation of the biggest stars and filmmakers in the industry. We love to hate the Oscars. We claim they don't matter and we still wish our favorite film gets one. And because we want to see what this year's "Adele Dazeem" flub will be.
Funny how the Awards matter when the movie we like wins but when it doesn't then it's "Their opinion doesn't matter! They're intentionally giving the award to a worse movie because [insert reason here]! They're just snobby white guys who haven't seen any of the movies anyway!"

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! Also, you know how many writers love writing about Oscar snubs?
The Peanuts Movie not getting nominated for Best Animated Feature?
Boooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Best cinematography for "Fury Road". To each their own but as a fan of the Jackie Chan didn't need that blatantly sped up camera bullshit for his action scenes school of film making, I passionately disagree.
The Golden Globes are better than the Oscars, everyone should watch those instead...kind of like people should just watch football games other than the NFL? What am I saying?(that Concussion should have been nominated)
The Godfather: Part II won Best Picture, and Part III was nominated. Toy Story 3 was nominated. There is precedent.
Ceterum censeo Morbillivirum esse eradicandum.I liked The Force Awakens, but it is nearly a note-for-note rehash of the first film. Finn's the Han Solo character, Rey is Leia, Kylo Ren is Vader, there's a cute droid carrying important secret information, there's a Death Star, there's a planet that the Death Star blows up. There's even a cantina scene. That's not the kind of thing that gets Oscar nominations.
And that aside, it is true that sequels don't usually get a lot of Oscar nominations, LOTR and The Godfather Part II notwithstanding.
While most of the members of the Academy fill that category, things got a little bit better since the 70's, at least, (e.g. Yaphet Kotto). Here's something from Kotto's page (on Selma and the whole racial issue with the Oscars - make of it what you will):
I'm also a bit miffed Star Wars didn't get a Best Picture nod. The AFI ranked it as one of the top ten movies of the year, most of the rest of which got nods. Not that I think it'd win when up against stuff like The Big Short and The Martian, though.
