Talk about Abridged Series that don't quite warrant their own thread yet, and just the genre in general.

Man, I always wanted to make some abridged series, but I can't do...well, anything that involves in making one. XD

Also, here's an abridged series for Dan Machi. In which every goddess is horny as hell. Kinda faithful to the source material, really. XD

The Devil Is A Part Timer Abridged is pretty excellent. Decent VA work, captures the characters well, but deviates enough to not be boring (the show itself is enough of a parody that I could see it winding up being a Redundant Parody, but it worked pretty well).

I've been watching Young Justice Abridged again after seeing the series has more than 3 videos now, and it's great. The voices all fit the characters or the jokes involving the characters, the voice acting is good, and the mouth flap editing is really on point when it can be.

The most ambitious thing about it is the use of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies in the Young Justice canon. It's basically using some characters that never appeared in Young Justice proper and weaves them into the main plot. For example, Black Mask is portrayed as responsible for both the Amazo robots and Kobra Vemon payments.

If you really like DC stuff I'd say you should check it out.

Random thought.

You know you messed up with your Abridged Series, if the original show is funnier.

So I'll change it up and mention an Abridged Series I didn't like... specifically, One Punch Man. Now, I love OPM, but the show is so parodic (and short) that an abridged series is going to be a tough sell. And I just didn't feel like it really did anything with the material. Am I just spoiled by other Abridged Series, or does anyone else agree with me?

One Punch Man already being satire, I can see why you feel that way.

To be honest, I don't get the point of doing an abridged series on something that's already goofy and funny {Like Azumanga Daioh for example}. It just usually seems funnier when you take a show where the original source material was either serious or at least not ultra-goofy and make it hilarious. There are some exceptions like Sonic F {Which I am a huge fan of}, but still.

Anyone here a Berserk fan who's watched Berserk Abridged? It's hilarious, especially how the last couple of episodes are handled.

That's like the only good abridged series that ended, isn't it?

Berserked Abridged is great. So is Escaflowne Abridged, which was done by the same guy. Both are completed.

Agreeing with the sentiment about abridging shows already heavy in satire/comedy. You don't have anywhere to go from there for jokes because the original covered it.

The reason why I like Sonic F even though it falls under that catergory is because for one thing the original show was immensly flawed and a fair amount of it's humor was corny or just didn't work {Made even worse in the 4kids dub, as per usual}. So when Sonic F goes and pokes fun at it or has some amusing Alternate Character Interpretation's, it still works out pretty well, especially if your a big Sonic fan.

My favorite abridged series however would have to be Dragonball Z Abridged. Good ol' Team Four Star never seems to dissapoint. To be honest, I even find their versions of the various Filler DBZ films more entertaining then the original movies themselves.

Now you know Sonic X, right? The fourth incarnation of the blue blur's animated adventures?

Well, take that series, strip away the audio track, rewrite the story and re-edit practically everything, and you get the first Abridged Series/Gag Dub/Completely edited series of the whole Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

You see, Sonic F adapts, re-works and mocks what was once a Cut-and-Paste Translation of the second anime version of Sonic, which was originally intended to be more faithful to the games before the whole Westernization process.

Sounds as ambitious as Young Justice Abridged, not exactly a case of taking an already satirical work and making it a joke. I'll think I'll start watching it now actually.

Well yeah, Sonic X wasn't satire or anything. But a large chunk of it {Like 90% of it} was comedy.

We were talking about making abridged series out of satirical works, not ones that were just funny.

So yeah. Been watching that Escaflowne Abridged per a recommendation in this topic. It's... quite excellent. Love the digs at how poorly Fox handled the show, its own shonen/shojou hermaphrodism, and a lot of the jokes just worked well.

Especially the scene where (standard shonen hero) Van stops talking about how awesome he is and genuinely believes he's gained a superpower because he can tell how other people are feeling just by hearing them speak. It's hilarious.

[up]hbi2k really loves using demographic conventions in his abridged series. It helps that Berserk and Escaflowne are in a similar genre, so some of his Berserk Abridged jokes can be used in Escaflowne Abridged.

I watched all 3 episodes of Nux Taku's One Punch Man Abridged, and I wasn't exactly impressed. Not just because I didn't hear any real good jokes with the original material, but because he ends up using jokes from other abridged series as well. For example, "Speed of Sound" Sonic has Littlekuriboh's "Sexy Back" joke used for him when he talks.

It's really hard to do a parody of a series that is, itself, already satirical in nature.

I love that Dan Machi Abridged series, it's hilarious tongue!! I actually went ahead and made a Tropes page and CMOF page for it, since there wasn't one already:

How To Be An Adventurer.

Needs a little more wiki-magic-love, but otherwise, a good start, I guess.

So I've been watching Sword Art Online Abridged and I'm loving it.

I watched the first episode of Sword Art Online and was meh on it. But I'm really loving SAO Abridged. There are some jokes that are clearly picking on the source material, but they still provide enough context to stand on their own. Funny, good voice-acting, and the main character is a surprisingly excellent combination of Butt-Monkey and Awesome Ego.

Oh cool, Something Witty Entertainment has episodes 1-6 of Busou Renkin Abridged on their Youtube page. I'll have to check that out.
