Rivals of Aether

Tournament announced for March 16th.

The most important bit of news is that the tournament will feature eight characters..

New trailer's up showing off Absa and the new character, Etalus. It also showcases a new stage and what I'd assume are the next batch of "seasonal" palette costumes, respectively being a stage based on Tower of Heaven, and Game Boy palettes for everyone.

I need to play the game more often, before now I've not had much interest in it in spite of my brother owning it. Etalus looks like a lot of fun though, I'll be sure to try him out when he comes out.

Niice. I absolutely loved Tower Of Heaven, so it'll be nice to see it referenced in another of my games.

Etalus got some invincibility or flinch immunity from the ice at one point by smashing into the icy ground.

It definitely looks like Etalus won't be a character you can just pick up and play. He's got some techniques that seem like you'll have to dedicate a decent amount of time to in order to use them effectively.

First Impressions from Alpharad

So he seems to be an easy but fun character, but probably low tier. Cool colors though. Fine with me, I'm just excited about the Tower of Heaven stage and the gameboy colors.

So I finally caved and got Steam and bought this. I really like the feel of it. I'm liking Orcane, Etalus, and Absa so far.

Also Custom Colors is the best thing.

1.0 is here, guys! The story mode was simply okay, but Abyss mode is a ton of fun!

Going to be replaying the story a couple more times to get some of the achievements anyway, so I might as well take notes and screenshots for the Rivals of Aether page.

Story Mode was very underwhelming.

Some of the character's stories were alright, but all of them are interrupted by four completely unrelated battles (with exactly one exception), before the Rival battle at the end, and some stories were better than others (looking at you, Wrastor...). It didn't even explain why the shadow stuff was causing trouble in the first place.

Best part of Story Mode is the speed-running. Even if you're not a Challenge Gamer, the reward you get for earning gold on every fight is really cool. Having two custom color palettes is great.

Ori's too big, but it's a necessary weasel to make him bigger so he can properly be drawn and fight the other characters.

New character announced: Ranno!

It's... Greninja meets Zenyatta? Certainly a unique combo. Playstyle looks fun.

don't see how that makes him either Greninja or Zenyatta-like, especially since he doesn't play anything like the former and the latter barely even fights.

You said it yourself, he's a frog and a monk, so that automatically makes him share something with both Greninja and Zenyatta.

There's no voices and this person is not in the story mode, so is Absa really a girly guy or a girl?

I wish this game had a community where I live. I'd rather play it over Smash (including Melee) any day.

Absa's female. So is Maypul for that matter. If you look at their info while selecting them (or in their tutorial), you'll see that the game refers to them as female.

Also, I just realized that I haven't ran this game since it launched. Everything's more... complete now. I'm not used to hearing music in places other than the stages.

Kind of annoyed that I have to unlock Absa and Etalus just to play them again though.

Also he has a floaty necklace of poison balls. It's really Zenyatta-like.

Wait, there's info when selecting them? There's a per-character tutorial!!!???

Well, I failed a spot check right there...

(Already gathered Maypul was a girl based on story mode dialogue though...)

Hadn't played Story yet. I kind of forgot about the game till now, despite playing it regularly when I had Early Access (though that kind of petered out months ago). Which is kind of weird, since I remember being excited for Ori, who is post-release (despite having never personally played the game Ori and Sien originate from).

I think in the full release, you have to play through the main tutorial modes to get to the character specific ones, but I'm pretty sure the tutorials for the characters have dialogue related specifically to that character.

Another character revealed: Clairen!

She's a lightsaber-wielding panther from the future, sent back in time to save the Fire Kingdom. Her moveset borrows from Smash swordsmen like Marth, Shulk, and Meta Knight. For her unique mechanics, a number of her moves have sweet spots that cause a stun effect, and she has a move that places a force field on the stage. She and Ranno come out for the Steam version on the 17th.
